Let's make a game that *isn't* a WoW clone!

Seems like the two most popular WoW-related rants these days are 'WoW is dying' and the fact that every MMO ever created is a WoW clone. I've even seen that charge leveled against EVE Online, but I hope to god they were just joking. So, let's design an MMO that is in no way a WoW clone! We'll start off by listing the features we can't use;

  • No fantasy settings.
  • No multiple races.
  • No multiple classes.
  • No instanced areas.
  • No non-instanced areas.
  • No PVP.
  • No PVE.
  • No in-game chat.
  • No Auction House.
  • No raiding.
  • No loot drops.
  • No tiered gear.
  • No monthly fee.
  • No spells or abilities.
  • No hotbar for above-mentioned spells and abilities.
  • No talent, ability, or skill points.
  • No character progression.
  • No grinding.
  • No quest-givers.
  • No quests.

Okay. Now that we have all that, we take what's left and make a game! Without further ado, I give you, The Non-WoW-Clone-Game!

Nope, that's not a screenshot, that's the full game. Enjoy.

The point to all this is that there's a difference between similar themes and outright copyright infringement. There's only one game I'd actually consider a WoW clone, and that's Talisman Online. I'm guessing the only reason the Blizz lawyers haven't brought down thier almighty wrath is that they don't know abbout it.

lol nice one, totally agree with u on that point.

Also the "I hate SOE forever" is something weird, but then again i havent played pre or post-NGE SWG ;) but to burn a unreleased SOE game seems harsh

    MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

Not really, I can understand that to a point. If a certain company burns you enough, you get gunshy. I for one will never use an AT&T product ever again, for example.

Trust me, if you ever hear anything bad about SOE, it's best to presume they're guilty until proven innocent.

SOE don't see you as their customer, more that they see you as their bitch.

I'm curious how you'd be a WoW clone by including these features...can you please point out the ones which WoW invented and didn't take from games before it?

    • No fantasy settings.
    • No multiple races.
    • No multiple classes.
    • No instanced areas.
    • No non-instanced areas.
    • No PVP.
    • No PVE.

    LOL...yeah, just re-read the OP.

p.s. I really would like to see a lot more MMOs without fantasy settings, btw.

We'll start off by listing the features we can't use;

No fantasy settings. - Hard to get away from but original world Asherons Call
No multiple races. - Lets See they are all humans but seperated like African from Chinese that would be Asheron's Call
No multiple classes. - Hmmm No classes what so ever except your own creation again Asheron's Call
No instanced areas. -  No instances just dungeons to enter that can get over crowded and instanced areas were not in the tech at the time, again Asheron's Call
No non-instanced areas. - One HUGE map, no areas that were instance again wasn't in the tech at the time, Asherons Call
No PVP. - Arguably some of the best PVP in all MMORPGs so I can't say it doesn't have it but Asherons call
No PVE. - Well every game has this so I can't specify anything special here other then WOW didn't create it they copied it
No in-game chat.  - Again Wow didn't create it, it has being around for AGES
No Auction House. - The first time I saw Auction House's was in SWG I could be wrong but WOW copied this.
No raiding. - To me this is original to WOW, almost ever MMO before WOW just called it grouping and questing.
No loot drops. - WOW didn't invent Loot Drops every MMO has them
No tiered gear. - Some MMO's don't have tiered gear just better and better gear, example Asheron's Call
No monthly fee. - Well they didn't invent this so having one wouldn't constitute a WOW CLONE they copied it from others
No spells or abilities. - Again they didn't invent spells and abilities they copied it from others
No hotbar for above-mentioned spells and abilities. - Again being around for ages
No talent, ability, or skill points.  - Almost a unique feature to WOW if it hadn't being done in Asheron's Call, AC2, SWG, DAOC, EQ wow I could go on
No character progression. - this I don't even thing WOW has, your character never really evolves, take away all his gear and he is nothing really.  Now character progression is like EQ, or AC
No grinding. - Again they didn't invent it so it wouldn't be a WOW clone if you had it
No quest-givers. - Same as No Grinding
No quests. - Gotta have quests or Grinding so this is a bad point.

Okay. Now that we have all that, we take what's left and make a game! Without further ado, I give you, The Non-WoW-Clone-Game!

Sorry to dissagree with you but if you did all of those things you would not have a wow clone you won't have anything like you show.  However since Blizzard didn't invent almost ANY of the things you mentioned why would including them in your mmo make it a WOW clone?  If you want a game that isn't a WOW clone try out something like Asheron's Call, its dated but way different, and a completely fun experience.  I do believe that some games have tried to copy the success of WOW by implementing these features in a simmilar way as WOW.  An example of this would be LOTRO, I know there are differences, however they did attempt to copy the success in this game.

A new game to me that would be different from WOW but still successful would be an upgraded Asheron's Call.  Not the AC2 style that was killed off but the original AC, upgraded graphics a few modifications to the game to bring it into the next gen and poof I think you would have an addictive MMO for everyone again.

However that is only my opinion.

This always makes me want to puke. WoW is a clone of eq1. only easier. You guys should really stop giving WoW all this credit, every mmo todate is actually a rip off of UO and eq1 and perhaps a couple others. WoW is little more than a more popular knockoff. thats right knockoff. Stop insulting the "REAL" grandfathers of the genre with this nonsense by acting like WoW is anything but a copy itself.

What??? You mean there ISN'T a hello kitty toaster RPG??

IMHO, a toaster would serve as your gear...

There are different qualities, sizes, prices and all of that. So that would be tiered gear right there.

The toast would serve as the enemy... Use the toaster to defeat the toast = PvE

Or have a toast off against our friends! = PvP

Congrats OP, you've created another WoW clone!

While the satire of the OP is going over some folks heads, it is possible to make a WOW clone by designing your game with these key elements.

PVE centric game play, with questing being the primary means of gaining experience.  Predefined classes  with levels (as opposed to skills), faction grinding, and raiding as the main end game.  Make the PVP meaningless (i.e. no player controlled areas, keeps, castles) or lacking in real rewards.

I know WOW didn't invent any of these, but going forward too many games seem to be trying to follow this model due to its past financial success. (i.e. LotRO)

Of course, there are games that don't follow the formula (past, present and future) however they are few and far between, and frequently not well received. (i.e. PotBS)

Of course, we don't have to discard everything in the model to make a new, fun game, but lets hope AOC and WAR's upcoming releases buck the trend enough to make them different.

Its always been possible to make a fresh game using these elements.  The problem isn't with the possibilities of such, its that there are just too many players now who think that anything using ANY element of standard MMO's is now a WoW clone.

Its not just stupid, its insulting....particularly to those whom actually made the games that started it.  I've seen it on every board here.  There is very little in WoW at all that can be considered truly unique to the genre.  Outside of the actual lore....its all just refined versions of a system already in place.

I personally hope more people DO take note of things WoW has done.  If nothing else, I'd like for future teams to put as much polish on their ideals as Blizzard has.

ok,ive studied the image and now id like to break down the OPs idea for an "original" game:

    • the toaster is very cartoony looking
    • this is a blatant attempt to cash in on WoWs cartoony graphics
    • the toaster has buttons, which to me look suspiciously like they perform some kind of function. again, trying to jump into bed with WoWs sucess and its invention of hotkeying.
    • any 6 year old could press the buttons on the toaster, and its a 100% truthful and known fact that blizzards player base is made entirely of 6-10 year olds. coincidence?i think not. aiming for the WoW playerbase.
    • the useage of a cat is a copy of the druids cat form, and the nightsabers that elves use as mounts.

I applaud the idea of getting burned by the toaster,as this at least adds an element of risk versus reward.eating the toast itself may also burn your mouth,or those with sensitive teeth may not enjoy the crispy edges,so not any noob can come along and eat it.

most of those features are standard in MMORPGS, WoW didn't invent any of that stuff imo.
