Play the Fae trial, a real trial rant

TycodaTycoda Member UncommonPosts: 37

I am very disappointed..... Here's the story why.

I thought I would try the Play the Fae trial Everquest is offering, so I download and install. I'm thinking this will only take a short time and I will be playing. Boy was i wrong! I created a new account and got the updater running. This is where it all goes to crap. Now you have to understand I have a very stable cable internet connection, I have clocked downloads with Getright at almost 600K/s. I know that is a little overstated, but I don't have connection problems, don't go there. So, the updater does the file check, no prob, and starts to download the update. OMG 4 hours is the projected time to finish!?!?! WTF, this is SONY, one of the biggest electronics companies, ever! And they can't foot the bill for a fast server???

Ok calm down, so, I wait, and wait. Ok, lets look at the other things sony's station pass offers while I wait. Hey look some casual online games, lets try Infantry Online. Not too long of a wait to download. Everquest is still churning away in the background. I get into the game, do a little reading, wtf is this... pick a room, ok, try bug hunt, sounds like I'm going to kill some bugs, ok fine... hmm, top down graphics, not so good, uh... how the hell do you control this!?!? wtf, I'm a bug!! I'm realing at the shear crappiness of it all, THIS GAME IS TERRIBLE!!!!! Then I laugh as I see the only other person on the server blow my bug gutts all over. OK, so this sucks, EXIT, DELETE, next.

Everquest is still 3 hours away. Fine, Sony must have something else to keep me busy. Look, Cosmic Rift? Sure let's try it. Admittedly I have been spoiled by EVE online, and before that, Earth & Beyond. But, I've played retro games to pass the time. Ok, download and start playing. omg same look and feel as Infantry online.... wtf, ok let's see what I can do. Rogue Trader sounds good, I like mining and collecting, try that. Uh, can't mine or harvest, only thing my ship does is move, shoot and bump into things. Can't find anything to shoot, lots to bump into...... I give up, this is also TERRIBLE, EXIT, DELETE, next.

Everquest is still two and a half hours to update...  and the only thing I find  in there "massive" (2 page) database of games to play, I already have on my computer, Zuma!!! "WHO! Rumble rumble rumble. Boink! POP! Boink! POP! Boink! POP! Boink! POP! OGA CHAKA!" Hours to go!

I am mistified at how SONY online has the crappiest online "portal" I've ever seen... I'm very unimpressed. Still waiting for Everquest..... just venting. Ugh

    about that trial

it forces you to play the Fae for your 1st character

    ignore your 1st character

and you can play almost any other race

"WHO! Rumble rumble rumble. Boink! POP! Boink! POP! Boink! POP! Boink! POP! OGA CHAKA!" Hours to go!....

Man, I was hearing the sounds in my head when reading that... my gf played it non stop next to me for hours. OGA CHAKA!

...minimize the station and play some other games that aren't bad or redundant? Ya gotta some other games...like an FPS...or a different mmo....or maybe a console, go play Burnout Paradise and crash some cars, that's pretty fun.

Honey, you aren't just downloading the small fae beginning area, you are downloading the whole game. The game is at LEAST 8 gigabytes big... did you seriously think it would be over in a few minutes?

  • jaestellejaestelle Member Posts: 17

I remember taking days to download some things :P  Now people complain about having to wait 4 hours to download a massive game.

  • StarkStark Member Posts: 119

You have a standard cable connection nothing special about it. 4 hours is nothing get over yourself.

  • gothgargothgar Member Posts: 87

You're really going to be pissed when you get in game and there is maybe, maybe a total of  three hours worth of play on the starter island.

I just downloaded the trial and played, and I am quite pissed that they would really have you download this entire fucking game so I can play it for 3 hours, it took longer to download the blasted thing.

The reason it's a 14 day trial is to give you 13 days to download it and 1 day to play it.

The game was fun don't get me wrong, but the insult that I just went through was enough to make me not play.

  • StarkStark Member Posts: 119

Stop complaining about a free trial. Buy the game and play forever- problem solved.

  • MoiraeMoirae Member RarePosts: 3,318

Oy, good god people.... the reason you download the whole game is so that, if you decide to buy it at the end, all you have to do is click a couple of buttons on their web site, enter a number into the engine and you're good to go.

I'm  a cheap lazy bastard to...and I wanna be like the cool kids the dump on SoE for no reason other than I have no backbone of my own, and am not brave enough to enjoy a good game even if it's uncool.

You know Geeky, sometimes it does appear that way. I sometimes wonder if it is a generational thing and how many ADD ten-year olds are playing these games.

Yikes! What's with all this chatter, I was just venting over the "download the library of congress to play a trial" thing. Finally played it for a bit and it's not bad, nothing special. Graphics are good. Can't seem to find a mini-map, which would be nice.

I was just suprised at the slow download speed, I've played plenty of other mmos that update in a flash.

To all, don't take anything you see on the net seriously!

If you read everything with a neutral tone, you won't get upset over little things that just don't matter.

    Relax, life is too short.

If you create a fae you don't start on a starter island... at least you don't in the non-Trial version.

In fact, the laucher is not updating the game, it is downloading the whole game. I got the trial today, and I noticed the install file has only 80MB, but the launcher downloaded over 4GB. It took a lot of time to download, course, 4GB... but at a good speed, 400Kbps (my connection cap.).

I also enjoyed the graphics, way better than LOTRO, for example.

Whoa, wait a min. Better than LOTRO? Hmmmm, I have to say that that must be a difference in opinion as I find the graphics in LOTRO better than EQ II. Or at least the world itself.

The EQII world is so bland to me.

I really enjoyed the shadow knight class though.

Hmm I dunno. Just recently used a buddy key and installed the trial onto my pc. Download took about 5-6 hours in total. Enjoyed the game and thought 'woot, now all I gotta do is subscribe and I can play!' Wrong. Once I fully subsribed, there was another 12 hours of downloading for me :(

this trial version is what got me back into the game (played beta). i downloaded it overnight.

i'm assuming the trial is just the base game, and the faydwer expansion. the full game has a few more expansions. there is no newb island... at least with the races i started. the new starter areas are much nicer than before especially kunark.

  • mackdawg19mackdawg19 Member UncommonPosts: 842

The trial only downloads the basic game and the fae expansion. If you buy the game after playing the trial and get the full deal, you will have to download the other expansions and packs. Sometimes the download speed also varies on your connect to that server. Some ISP's will route you a certain way which could decrease performance. But a 600k/sec download speed is reasonable on a standerd cable connect. I got a 5 mb connect and get around 600k - 1.5mb /sec depending on the site.

I also had problems with that trail

I downloaded it, logged in, created a character, choosed a server (runnyeye because I'm located in europe)

and when I wanted to enter the game world moy computer chrased...

    that's a pitty... I always wanted to try EQ2

    waiting for ... nothing..

Yeah, ur right. I just played for a few minutes with Fae, and the chars look better (mainly geometry) in EQ2, but the world is way better in LOTRO.

It took me 47 hours to download all the patches on 56kb/s connection, so to see someone complaining about 4 hours makes me laugh.

  • EverSkellyEverSkelly Member UncommonPosts: 341

    to OP

what do you want?  Why are you even posting this? 4 hours to download the trial?  Not interested in some F2P soe games? Good. I have never played cosmic rift or infantry online.  No one forces you to.

So... do you want an official SOE apologee for too long download? Or maybe 4 extra hours of free trial ?

Some people could complain about anything they see.

  • TycodaTycoda Member UncommonPosts: 37

Hey, it's a broadband world where I live. I was just surprised at the fact I had to download so much more than the original installer. Why wasn't the installer bigger? And I see EQ2 has lots of add-on packs which explains that part.

I went off on a tangent with SOE's poor online presence, with the shitty online casual games. This baffled me. Like I said, Sony is a huge name. Why no one has bothered to improve their online presence is weird. Yes, they have SWG and EQ2, but all I hear are complaints about SWG and SOE's policies.

No one is twisting my arm, true.

47 hours downloading? Yikes! Hope it was worth it.

As for the game it's pretty good, but I've already lost interest. Tired of "Whack rats with sticks" games.

Why do I even bother posting... all I get is "Poor baby" and "screw you", you people need to take chill pills, seriously, why all the hostility...

    Someone delete this thread please

    56kb/s is broadband, half a meg :x

the trial sucks and this why

like the 1st thread it took ages to download i too have a fast connection

i said okay no problem let it run overnight

u have to make a fae character and then u can make other characters- okay with that

With a 14 day trial u r stuck on the newbie island

u cannot get off it unless u buy the game

The whole island u can complete within 2 days max.

Also u dont get the feel of the game on just the island

they should have allowed a  few more areas to explore , let me see more things , let me see people houses , cities, outposts, let me participate in pvp  tempt me no

on the noob - newbie island u will see perhaps a few souls in the whole day and none of them want to pvp

so I keep going on a suicide mission attacking lvl 20+ npc guards

atleast swg and POTBS had better beta in terms of content offering

Now what should i do with 5 gb downloaded content and only the newbie island to explore with 10 days to spare
