Its almost a definite that this is due to Hardware shortages... but still ... :)

I think that's a significant change in PS3s sales. I'm not too sure though. Still, Nintendo is still on the lead.

As more titles come out, and developers learn to use the PS3 hardware to it's full advantage, the lead will be there. Wii will slowly sink into a comfortable niche and 360 will be left behind as its lack of power under the hood becomes more apparent against the PS3.

That doesn't really matter seeing as they make money off the games and only one top ten games is on a Sony format and that's COD4 lol.

Isn't that quite logical? I've not got the news on how much the consoles have sold before but it seems to me that Xbox 360 and Wii would "hit the roof" and then PS3 would pass them by, regardless of it's quite low sales numbers. PS2 is still going quite strong considering it's from the "oldgen", impressive.

Ya I agree its mainly because the PS3 is finally getting its titles as well as developers learning to better utilize the technology.  One thing you have to remember with the PS3 is that its not easily made cross-platform which means you will see more exclusive titles on it and less titles being ported to it.  This is because you develop it a different way to take advantage of its technology, primarily its monsterous processing power.  Less shaders, more polies, more rendering maps/features, and more gameplay functions.  Doing this however would make it hard to port to the 360 or Wii because of thier lack of processing power.

In the PS3 you will see more things happening, like the geometry deforming in realtime, cloth animation, procedural animation and textures as well as smoother animation, more rendering passes like maybe HDRI lighting and Specular Occlusion Mapping, and the game simply being able to do more features host more uniquely acting AI or Unique Functions.

The Wii will probably hit a wall in its sails when it hits 1 Billion units sold mainly because there would be no one left to sell to.  The Wii got the console right which is why its constantly selling out.  Cheap and fun is better then Expensive with more features unneeded on a console.

    This is strange. . .

Did Microsoft have any supply constraints? I ask this not because I find it completely unfeasible that the PS3 sold more than the 360 for the month of Jauary, but, rather, because the PS3 still only managed to get one game in the top 10. At the very same time the 360 had 4 games in the top 10. . .

It just doesn't make mch sense. The PS2 has an excuse, it's an older system with a much larger catalog of AAA titles to choose from, the PS3 does not have the same catalog and you'd think because of that with the recent influx of consoles being bought one of those exclusive AAA titles would have made the top 10.

Anybody know what happened? This isn't really something you see everyday.

    Eternally mine,
    Keebs

Low 200K is about what the 360 has been selling for the last year or so.  For comparison the PS2 sold 300K-400K per month year after year.  Neither the 350 or PS3 are anywhere close to the PS2 sales at the same point in it's life.

I bet a lot of people are buying it as a Blu-Ray player. I know when I buy a HDTV later this year i'm going to buy a PS3 as my blu-ray player (and maybe buy some games too). I'm not a console player at all so I don't really care much about the games.

And now that Blu-Ray is essentially the winner in the HD Movie game, more people are exploring the players. Why buy a $300 or so 1080p Blu-Ray player when you can get a $400 1080p Blu-Ray + game system

Well... Microsoft released a PR a day before NPD dropped there numbers.. it seemed alot like preemptive damage control..

    Quote:

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) is seeing shortages of its Xbox 360 video game console in the United States, as the company failed to anticipate strong post-holiday demand, an executive said on Wednesday.

"We are really running short of product here in the United States," Jeff Bell, head of global marketing for Microsoft's games business, said in an interview. "You could say we misjudged demand."

The comments came a day before market research firm NPD is expected to release video game sales data for January and Bell said Microsoft was hoping to "manage expectations."

"We're literally out of stock in many stores. We think this will have an impact on our sales," Bell said. "It may cause the overall industry number to be down a little bit.

"Retailers have been really upset, they are on allocation. It is a lag I think we're seeing in January and that may continue into February, then as spring ramps up, we'll be able to meet that demand."

Microsoft sold nearly 1.3 million Xbox 360 consoles in the United States in December, when the entire video games industry gets a boost from holiday shopping.

The Xbox 360 competes with Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) Wii console, as well as Sony Corp's (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) PlayStation 3.

How much of an impact this really had on MS's sales are unknown .. as the Xbox360 sold ~250k in Jan 2006 And ~250 in Jan 2007 as well.. Their numbers really dont go too much against the trend...

So was there a HW shortage?... apparentely so yes.

How much of an impact did this have?... Its unclear
