Welcome, I'm glad that you have decided to give FFXI a(nother) try!

I did love the game last time I played. I only left when it was impossible to solo and I'd out levelled all my friends :(

Take your time leveling then... the game has so much more to offer than just grinding >_<.

And yes, PoL updates are ridiculous - I have high speed internet and just leave it on over night so I don't have to worry about it.

I'm afraid I do take my time levelling. I spend a LOT of time in game when I play. I do every quest I can do and even spent a lot of time fishing. I did try growing plants last time I was in FFXI, but I kept getting the time wrong and logging in too late to harvest the xstals.

I just hope I can find enough groups to keep me busy this time as I'm coming in solo (without friends).

Well, best I can give you (if you didn't start on Pandemonium that is) is find a friendly Linkshell. Also, when you're partying with people you'll most likely see them again so make friends with them and add them to your playlist. Chances are if you are playing with them then they will generally play at the same time that you usually do.

I started with a few MMORPG people a few weeks ago, although 2/3 of us are more active than the other. With that said, I have very little time to play (Yeah, Xfire makes it seem like a lot but most of that is just having the PlayOnline viewer open :P) whereas my other friend has a ton of time. What he does is levels his main (Monk) and whenever I can party he switches over to his Warrior (and now, Paladin) and levels with me. This game makes it very easy to keep close to each other in levels, even if it does mean switching jobs.

Anyways, good luck. This game is still very much active, and I haven't had a problem getting a party yet.
