I would think the number would be lower, thats just huge. What would keep it lower is if every game had a real full version to play and not just small areas to try. People probably just say the games going to suck anyway I might as well have it for free mentality. Also demos are short and don't offer much and many probably want to try the full versions.
Baff I'm really tired of your stupid arguments.. You say COD4 made profit with their PC sales alone.. Sure.. Thats because the price is split between three platforms... I can almost PROMISE you that if it was an ONLY PC title.. then they would not have made a profit. Piracy and lack of sustainable sales on PC is the REASON why so many developers HAVE to put games on Console C&C3, Oblivion, Monkey Island, Crysis, FarCry, HALF LIFE, Rainbow Six, FEAR, GRAW.... PC developers HATE consoles.. Valve among other companies complained for days and days about 360 development, Then they complained for days and days about PS3 development... But they HAVE to put their games on these consoles WHY? Because game development costs have sky rocketted... pretty much all mainstream games are now in the range of 10-20 million dollars. When you sell horribly like Crysis did (they sold 1m to retailers not to consumers)... And have a couple hundred thousand pirated copies. The PC business is just NOT sustainable without putting games on Consoles.. And guess what.. .Soon enough.. because of people like you who continue to deny the existance of any problems in the PC industry... people either outright leave.. OR they bastardize the game and make it simple for the console players.. which is exactly what happened with Rainbow Six, which is exactly what happened with GRAW (which sold like crap on PC btw), which is exactly what happened with the elder scrolls, which is what's about to happen with Sim City, which is what happened with COD4, which is what is going to happen with Battlefield Bad Company, Which is what happened with BioShock, Which is happened to Far Cry ala Instincts, Which is what's going to happen with the next total Annhialation/ Supreme Commander...etc etc etc...
Chris Taylor:Well one of the key things that is really affecting the economics and the success of gaming in general is piracy on the PC. So one of the reasons we'll see RTSs on the console is because people can't pirate it.
I
And that right there shows Chris Taylor has no clue what the hell he is talking about. I can find every Xbox 360 game ever made as a pirate download with a couple of google searches. Same with every other console out there (not sure about PS3 and Wii, but all of the previous Playstation and Nintendo console games are available ).

They can. They just don't have the balls to be honest about it.
I think they need to form some sort of a standard with pc gaming... No longer shall it be a workstation/gaming machine.. They need a way to make it dedicate itself in some kind of mode switch.. Then they could find a better encryption method that doesnt have to rely on windows to read.. The console gmes CAN be pirated and ARE in some cases, but the hassle involved in decrypting the data and giving lots of hackers headaches , not to mention trying to have the console open and read this already decrypted data which it is not NORMALLY able to do..
But if they think console cant be pirated, then my question is WHY NOT make it like a console then? Consoles ARE PC's for the most part.. make a gaming mode for pc's, maybe as PART of windows of some operating system? Or it coud be standard on all of em like DOS, that can be flashed into a bios, and everytime a game cd is recognized it will automaticlly start copying files and booting the game, and when its over most of the core files are deleted until the game is played again.. Make windows reject exploring the cd if it is detceted to be a game..
They are smart enough to do it and so what if some people complain, if the companies biggest complaint is of pirates on the pc then they should DO SOMETHING about it, running away solves NOTHING...
I can compare piracy of older years to todays I just did. You found an article putting todays piracy at a level of 80%, I found one putting 1995's at 78%. Consoles and PC's are still two completely different audiences. There are however people who still own and enjoy both and always have been.
I can believe console gamers will buy Halflife 2. But PC gamers still won't buy Halo.
Because what is innovative on the console, was innovative on the PC 3 years ago. It isn't a static market and the pecking order doesn't work in reverse. Gears of War is not about to sell 2 million copies on the PC.
Half life 2 was a best selling PC, it broke all previous sales records. Pc games bought it in it's millions. They are still buying it, 3 years on. You might notice exactly how many games do break all previous sales records. The market is still growing, it happens 3 times a year.
Infinity Ward complained about piracy in a thread titled no wonder people won't make PC games. You understood that when you started this thread, now you are back peddling becuase it turns out their PC sales were actually excellent, their best yet, profitable in their own right and now the dev's just look stupid.
You can think of as many reasons as you like why Ubisoft made two versions. I will tell you the actual reason. Because their market research told them to. They went the console route and it lost them their share of the PC game market for the Tom Clancy franchise. They wanted to get it back. They asked the PC gamers what they wanted in the next Ghost Recon Title and all the PC gamers to a man said, "no more console ports". All the reviews of their console ports said "crappy console port". When they checked their sales figures, they found that the console ports hadn't sold. That's it. Thats the reason. No need for you to think. No need for me to address this with you further. Look it up for yourself if you like. No need for you to make idle conjecture. Trying something new has nothing to do with anything. They made a franchise title. The object is not to try something new but to make more of the same.
MMORPG subscritption was widely heralded as the savoiur of PC gaming about 2-3 years ago. Is that an old interview or something? At which point all the publishers, excited by the runaway and highly profitable success of WoW all embarked upon making their own titles. 3 years on, it's to pay back the investors time and as we have seen with Microsoft dropping Marvel and Vanguard, that little investment bubble is over. MMOROG's are a saturated market with the current dominant product (WoW) so far in advance of the competition that new titles that can steal it's customers away are pretty unlikely. Publishers are dropping all those mmorpg's. But someting along the lines of a requires login and authentication service is clearly the way forward if piracy is your prime concern. Hence the Battlefield and Quake Wars games, and the multiplayer elements of COD have all been pretty much unaffected by piracy.
COD 4 is not the best selling game of 2007. It's not even in the right league. to give you some idea, Wii Sports sold 17 million copies.
No you can't compare those two. You're comparing the piracy of an industry where games took a few tenthousands of dollars to develop to an industry where a game takes up millions of dollars to develop.
PC gamers won't buy halo? wow, shocking. Halo 1 was released on PC 2 years after its xbox release, so it's pretty difficult to stand out when your released with such outdated graphics. Halo 2 is no different, released 2 and a half years after release and it requires Windows Vista.
Infinity Ward was shocked at the amount of people pirated the game, they never even mentioned their sales numbers, They obviously weren't refering to themself because they still make games for the PC.
By the way you contradicted yourself. You claimed "What's new on consoles is 3 years old on PC". Really? If so, then why did you promote Half Life 2's vehicle sections as innovative? Halo had vehicle sections, and done them a lot better I might add.
And yes, some companies do innovate with franchises, much like how Ubisoft also changed the formula for Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six series. Advanced Warfighter is no different.
CoD4 multiplayer has been affected by piracy, do you even read the actual articles?
And call of Duty 4 IS the best selling game of 2007.
Your wii sports comment is laughable. Wii sports comes with every Wii unit by default in Europe and America (and I think Japan includes it now as well). It isn't sold seperately.

I was quite shocked when I read this. According to this article, Piracy in gaming makes is around 80% in the US. In Europe, the number is 90% and in Asia it's completely off the charts.
it's no wonder that some of the smaller developing companies are struggling.
It's no wonder that Epic Games is dumping PC games for the greener pastures of console gaming: piracy rates for the U.S. market alone are hovering around 80%! And beyond the U.S., the piracy picture becomes even larger and more menacing -- especially if you're an independent developer without "Madden-sized advertising budget," said THQ Director of Creative Management Michael Fitch, who laid out his case against piracy and hardware manufactures in an epic rant at the Quarter to Three forums. In the post, Fitch attacked pirates, the PC software security model and everything in between. In Europe, he said, piracy rates approach 90%. In Asia, those figures are "off the charts." "I didn't believe [the data] at first. It seemed way too high. Then I saw that Bioshock was selling 5 to 1 on console vs. PC. And Call of Duty 4 was selling 10 to 1. These are hardcore games, shooters, classic PC audience stuff. Given the difference in install base, I can't believe that there's that big of a difference in who played these games, but I guess there can be in who actually payed for them," Fitch said. These are hard numbers for any PC developer to ignore, and from the tone of Fitch's message board rant the other day, things are likely to get much worse before they get better. Or should that be "if" they get better?
Originally posted by baff Cod 4 has sold 1/3-1/2 a million copies on PC. That alone pays for the whole development and then some. Not only has it paid for the entire development on all platforms it has also earnt the owner of Infinity Ward a new Ferrari and a new mansion from just those royalties. If you do the maths before getting smart with your mouth you won't get so annoyed so fast. They dont make $60 on every game sold. That's how much the retailer sells it for.. but they sell to retailers with a deep discount. Besides the est. 20m for development.. there's also licensing issues, servers to support, millions upon millions spent in marketting, Localization. They would have came up short if they still sold 1/3 to 1/2 of a million on PC. then at the same time... its a big game of hypotheticals... because.. I assume if it was on PC it would have had a smaller marketting budget....... so they could save millions there... but at the same time it might not sell as much... hmmm yeah.. thats a difficult road to go down.
I'm not pretending to you that piracy is not a problem or that it does not damage sales. I'm just pointing out that lost sales aren't what is important. Sales made are. I see your point now.... Before you seemed like you believed that piracy being an issue was an illusion or something. So I appologize for not seeing what you were trying to get at. You just seemed to be saying.. Oh this game sucks so thats why people haven't bought it and people are hackin it... It doesn't matter how many millions of copies are pirated as long as the company sells enough to make a profit, more games will be made. COD has made a massive profit. Even excluding all the console copies sold it has made a massive profit. No, remember they dont make $60 per game sold.. There isn't a problem. It's a very profitable and expanding business. See.... thats why the PC industry is so strange... its expanding... but the number of games that the PC industry can successfully support is slowly shrinking. Sure... 3, 4,5 non-MMORPG games can be successfull in a year on the PC exclusively..... but compare that to just a few years ago ... I'm sure you've seen this as well?

All you need is a Swap-Disk and/or a Action Replay disk in most cases. There's even software you can place on the hard drive ( which is where most copied Xbox360 games are played from, not the disk ) or on the memory card. Playing burned games on unmodded consoles is not very difficult anymore. Keep up with the times, bro.

True, but the majority of console gamers still play singleplayer games. And there was no mention that we were only discussing online games here.
Edit: So far, the only way I see piracy being defeated is with games which require you to play solely online ( not online authentication such as Steam or Neverwinter Nights, as these systems can be thwarted quite easily ). Any sort of singleplayer game and it will be pirated. Look at Phantasy Star Universe as an example, since it has a singleplayer game as well as the mmorpg setup. So, unless every game out there is made solely for online play, piracy isn't going anywhere. And even then, you'll just start seeing hackers making private servers for the console games, the same as they do PC games such as mmos.

You can't just walk into a store and ask for a swap disk, very few stores carry those. Same for Action Replay, only a few store carry those and afaik, those things only work with import games, not burned games.
Putting software on your harddrive like that is a good way to get yourself banned from Xbox live.

Funny, I can think of two independent game shops here that sell swap disks. They are also available for purchase online. And you can get Action replay at any Wal-Mart or Best Buy, as well as Gamestop, Hollywood Video, and a thousand other places. And AR can be used to play burned games, if you know how. And anyone who pirates games probably knows how to use google.
Putting software on your harddrive like that is a good way to get yourself banned from Xbox live. And again, here you are assuming that everyone pirates games to play online. People pirate singleplayer games. The only time people pirate multiplayer games are if the game supports LAN, is physically multiplayer ( as in you and your friends sitting around the console playing together ) and/or the ability to have an independent server. Which is why I state again, if the game is not made solely for online play, with no singleplayer game at all, it will be pirated. And how is having games on your harddrive going to get you banned? That's what the damn harddrive is there for. The games go on the harddrive. The software goes on the memory card.

I don't know about american stores, all I know is that over here, the larger stores don't carry stuff like that.
About Piracy, there are currently around 18 million Xbox360's sold and Xbox live currently has 10 million members, so 10 million people are interested in playing online and would probably want to avoid getting themself banned. Keep in mind that Xbox live will also ban you even if you never play online, as long as you connect to Xbox live, it will scan your system. There currently is no active replay avaible for the Xbox360.
So missing the ability to play multiplayer (which is a pretty big feature for Xbox) and that combined with the small amount of people who actually know about this stuff, and it's pretty small, and probably not even in the same galaxy as pirating on the PC.

Since you're going to be short-sighted about this, let me spell it out for ya.
Let's say I own an Xbox360 ( I don't, as I think they're crap imho ), and I want to play pirated games. Now we assume I have a harddrive full of pirated games.
Now, I wanna play online. I simply disconnect the harddrive with the pirated games, change memory cards, and voila!!
And if you think pirates are bothered with taking a minute to swap or disconnect their harddrive and memory card in exchange for playing thousands of dollars of games for free, you are really disillusioned.
There currently is no active replay avaible for the Xbox360.
As I've already shown, you don't need one. I was originally talking about consoles in general, then you narrowed it down to 360 in your continuing arguments.AR can be used for other consoles. You don't need to mod the 360 or use any form of outside help to play pirated Xbox360 games, outside of a few kilobytes of code on the memory card. So, Xbox360 is actually the most pirate friendly system out there. You can't win this argument, GL.

Honestly, I wish you could.
Zorvan, Xbox live will also scan what actions you took in the past, so disconecting your hard drive is no use you think Microsoft is stupid or something? When you pirate once, you can never log into xbox live again, unless you're lucky to get bypass the secruitity check.
And AR can't be used for other consoles. a PS2 AR does not work on an Xbox360 or PS3.
and i'm sorry to break it down to you, but you already lost the arguement the moment you compared PC piracy to console piracy.
Consoles games are outselling PC games not because of piracy, but because of hardware. I just put down $1500 and I now have a computer that can run Crysis (and, in theory, anything else out there). Compared to $600 for an Xbox360 + 4 years of live. Sure, it's an extra $10 per game, but you can also rent games, trade them back in, etc.
Is it really worth it to pay this much money just to run PC games? If anyone needs to shape it it's going to be the hardware manufacturers and/or the game developers and their graphics-hungry ways.

Which is why I state again, if the game is not made solely for online play, with no singleplayer game at all, it will be pirated. And how is having games on your harddrive going to get you banned? That's what the damn harddrive is there for. The games go on the harddrive. The software goes on the memory card.
Keep in mind that Xbox live will also ban you even if you never play online, as long as you connect to Xbox live, it will scan your system.
Since you're going to be short-sighted about this, let me spell it out for ya.
Let's say I own an Xbox360 ( I don't, as I think they're crap imho ), and I want to play pirated games. Now we assume I have a harddrive full of pirated games.

When they can finally keep their "uncrackable" operating systems from being cracked and used by pirates, I may be able to take that question seriously.
When you pirate once, you can never log into xbox live again, unless you're lucky to get bypass the secruitity check.
I'm not going to argue that with you anymore. It can be bypassed, it is bypassed routinely, and I don't know what else to say.
And AR can't be used for other consoles. a PS2 AR does not work on an Xbox360 or PS3.
They make AR for different consoles, not just the PS2. And it appears that they don't have one for PS3 or X360 yet. However, like I've said in my posts above ( whether you want to believe it or not ), X360 is easily compromised on its own. PS3 can be done with the memory card software and hard drive also, if it makes you feel better. Also, PS2 is still a viable, currently selling and actively developed for console, so don't act like PS2 games being rampantly pirated is somehow not important to the current game industry.
and i'm sorry to break it down to you, but you already lost the arguement the moment you compared PC piracy to console piracy.
Sorry, no I didn't. Google is your damn friend, use it. Make a list of every pirated console game out there. Make it easy on yourself though. Start with PS2, PSP, Xbox, Xbox360. You'll find a list just as varied and costly as PC games.
I see quite a few remarks that imply that it is hard to pirate a console. false. It only takes a few minutes once you have the stuff.
I don't know what's involved with newer consoles. But I am sure not much. My PS2 was chipped while I was in Korea in like 10 minutes.
Personally, I just bought my games from the same guy right outside of the base for $5 USD. I did not have an Internet connection. I am pretty sure theres not much more involved than any other pirated software download, convert if needed , burn, play..
Sure beats paying $50+ US per game. A more realistic price is like $70-80 for a new release (Edit just to clerify: I am talking about console prices in reference as to why I chipped my PS2). Are you kidding me. If the guys doing the work are not getting fat then maybe its time to trim off the ones who are. It really is that simple in my book.
They look at this entirely wrong in my opinion. They blame a problem that no company will ever get control over, unless every single person on the Internet is monitored. Sounds like in this post some people might actually like that. Thats kinda scary.
Piracy will always be around. It's just harder for them to track consoles. If man can make it man can reverse engineer it and find a way around it.
I am not saying I support piracy. I am just saying people really look at this in a twisted and unsolvable manner.
If the developers are not making money off their games that's their problem not mine. Either the game sucks, or they need to trim the fat. Blaming a companies failure to piracy is rather stupid. It's obviously not helping them. But surely is not the cause of a companies failure either. Point me to a company that claims that and I will show you a dumbass.
Everything any company has come up with to stop piracy has been cracked within the first few months , weeks , or in some very funny cases day's.
You can't just walk into a store and ask for a swap disk, very few stores carry those. Same for Action Replay, only a few store carry those and afaik, those things only work with import games, not burned games.

Gameloading, Zorvans pretty dead on with Xbox live. Sorry to break it to ya. It does seem to be more like a cycle with the 360 atm. MS fixes the breach. crackers crack it. rinse and repeat. Google really is your friend atm.
i will add also that right now PS3 is really the odd man out when it comes to pirating games, and there's only 2 real reasons for that I can see.
1.) Limited game selection at the moment. As the library builds, so will the piracy.
2.) Blu-Ray. This is the single most important blocker to piracy as far as using physical disks. Once Blu-Ray becomes as prolific as DVD regarding peripherals such as Blu-Ray burners, allowing PS3 to play pirated disks (other than PS2/PS1 DVD/CDs ) with a hardware mod, PS3 piracy will jump through the roof. The low cost of DVD burners really ( just like CD and DVD burners fueled a jump in PC piracy before broadband and making .ISOs became the norm ) fueled PS2 piracy, and the same will happen with Blu-Ray/PS3.
I wish I could afford to buy more games. Most of them arent worth $20-30 though, let alone $50. Also, games rarely decrease in cost after the initial release. You can go to game stop or best buy and see a 2 year old game and it's still $50.

Completely irrelevent to the subject at hand
When you pirate once, you can never log into xbox live again, unless you're lucky to get bypass the secruitity check.
I'm not going to argue that with you anymore. It can be bypassed, it is bypassed routinely, and I don't know what else to say.
I'm sure it can, but it's definitly not an easy thing to do and console piracy is definitly not mainstream, unlike PC piracy.
And AR can't be used for other consoles. a PS2 AR does not work on an Xbox360 or PS3.
They make AR for different consoles, not just the PS2. And it appears that they don't have one for PS3 or X360 yet. The Playstation 2 is currently on its last legs and few games are being made for it. Memory Card software? what the heck does memory card software has to do with anything? You'd have to change quite a few things to your PS3 if you want it to run downloaded games, it's not as simple as you make it out to be.
and i'm sorry to break it down to you, but you already lost the arguement the moment you compared PC piracy to console piracy.

You missed my point. your point was that console piracy can be compared to PC piracy, which is not the case as there are far more people pirating games on PC than Consoles. The whole console piracy industry (if you can call it that) pales compared to PC piracy.
Comments
I would think the number would be lower, thats just huge. What would keep it lower is if every game had a real full version to play and not just small areas to try. People probably just say the games going to suck anyway I might as well have it for free mentality. Also demos are short and don't offer much and many probably want to try the full versions.

Hey Zorvan, Why don't you download one of those Xbox360 games, burn it on a disc and try and see how well it works on an unmodded Xbox360.
Don't believe everything you read.
Your mind is like a parachute, it's only useful when it's open.

Doesn't work for people who want to play games online.....

Keep in mind that Xbox live will also ban you even if you never play online, as long as you connect to Xbox live, it will scan your system.
Since you're going to be short-sighted about this, let me spell it out for ya.

bash.org pwns.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
Keep in mind that Xbox live will also ban you even if you never play online, as long as you connect to Xbox live, it will scan your system.

Now, I wanna play online. I simply disconnect the harddrive with the pirated games, change memory cards, and voila!!

Completely irrelevent to the subject at hand

I'm sure it can, but it's definitly not an easy thing to do and console piracy is definitly not mainstream, unlike PC piracy.
And AR can't be used for other consoles. a PS2 AR does not work on an Xbox360 or PS3.

The Playstation 2 is currently on its last legs and few games are being made for it. Memory Card software? what the heck does memory card software has to do with anything? You'd have to change quite a few things to your PS3 if you want it to run downloaded games, it's not as simple as you make it out to be.

You missed my point. your point was that console piracy can be compared to PC piracy, which is not the case as there are far more people pirating games on PC than Consoles. The whole console piracy industry (if you can call it that) pales compared to PC piracy.
Oh, and Baff:
Pc gamers sure hate Call of Duty 4, don't they?:

I respect Stardock (although I'm not a big fan of their games). This guy is absolutely correct.
that's why some small companies that have good games fall because of that piracy...anyways from which country, piracy started?
