I just found this article today on Gamasutra, and thought it was interesting to read. This particular segment at the beginning caught my eye.

" Sony has announced that after a structural reshuffle, its Sony Online Entertainment division (Everquest, The Agency) is being moved to the Sony Computer Entertainment wing to better integrate with "the PS3 experience," with CEO John Smedley now reporting directly to SCEI president Kaz Hirai."

So we'll have to wait and see if this will be a good thing or bad.

So Smedley will actually be accountable to somebody? I can't even imagine it...

    I found this more interesting:

Sony says the new structure "is designed to mutually benefit both companies by further accelerating the PlayStation business through SOE's strong online gaming expertise."

    Can you say MMO-port-to-console?

"If we don't attack them, they will attack us first. So we'd better retaliate before they have a chance to strike"

True, but the Agency may be just the start of the trend.

Not that it really matters. It just puts more gamers into their MMO's.

Besides SOE is not the only one trying to make it a trend, theres funcom bringing AoC to the 360 and bioware prolly going to put their mmo on consoles too.  Of course theres already FF11 on multi-platforms.  And square-enix's next mmo will be multi-platform also.  I think blizzard will too with their next mmo.

I very highly doubt it will be a bad thing.  I can't really think of too many ways SOE could become a worse company.  Whether or not it will be a good thing is up in the air though.  There will likely be some changes in SOE's upper management, but I doubt the changes that need to be made will be made.

SCEI will most likely be much more involved with what goes on at SOE than Sony Pictures was.  That could be a big gain for SOE's customers.  I really doubt the folks at SCEI would come to the conclusion that the folks at SOE haven't been hostile enough towards their customers.

Square-Enix's last MMO was multi-platform also.  You are correct that multi-platform is going to be much more common in the future.  It makes a ton of sense, business-wise, to maximize your potential customer base.  It will likely mean more simplified controls, and quite possible simplified game play.  It'll take a while for developers to realize that they don't have to make simple games to appeal to the console market.  There is really no reason a complex MMO couldn't be made for a console.  With voice chat becoming a standard feature in games, the lack of keyboards is becoming much less of an obstacle for cross platform MMOs.

So Smed is getting some adult supervision.

It will be interesting to see how long he lasts, and how long SOE's disasterous dearth of project management will be allowed to persist.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

Smed said that over 50% of his business will be on the PS3 - This change makes sense then.

I wonder what SCEI  is going to think of the money sinks - The Matrix Online and SWG-NGE. If you play these games I would pay my subs month to month.  I see a bad a moon arising.

So when they are incorporated into SCEI, there might not be a need for an SOE president or CEO what ever smed is; maybe we will all get our wish and he'll be looking for a new line of work

Everquest is also already on the console and has been for sometime now, at least a couple of years and maybel longer.

You have everquest online adventures and everquest online adventures:frontiers.

Frontiers is the same as EQOA but with expanded content. Both were released for the PS2, and completely playable on the PS3.

the SCEI acquisition of SOE might bring the long standing rumor of SWG going to consoles might be true considering the NGE essentially made the game playable on a dualshock.  I highly doubt it, but then again that rumor's been bouncing around since the early PS2 online days.

Other than EQOA, the only game that might get a huge boost if ported to the PS3 i think might be planetside. If you look at the items they are adding to Warhawk, Planetside has them all plus a little more.
