I have been reading a number of threads on this site and I am amazed by the number of people that posted that not only will they not play game 'X', they want to see game 'X' fail, the servers closed and the devs run out of town on a rail. Why have people who don't like a game taken it to the next level? Why do they want to see the game removed from the world?
I can understand why SWG and UO vets are disgruntled, the game changed into something very different and all the time and effort you put into it was shot to hell.
But what about other games? Some newer games have had abysmal launches, and I can see why people would be reluctant to return to them. I can also understand why these people would have nothing nice to say about a game they paid for that did not follow thru on the hype. But what is behind the desire to have it totally shut down even though others may like playing it? You played a game for a few months maybe a year, it didn't live of to your expectations so now you want it closed down?
I just don't understand.

well if crappy games get subscribers then companies will start doing crappy games. This is why it's important for someone, that the games he or she considers to be crappy, fail.
Flawed logic, seeing how 10 million seem to like WoW and an equal number seem to hate it. The same can probably be said for any other game.
There was a time long ago my friend where there wasnt that many online games.Everquest,Ultima, and Anarchy Online were really what MMORPG was in America. Now with all the korean ports, totaly ignorant devlopers and the 100's of investors that are trying to make a dollar of MMO's,what we have left is just a big pile of crap.Everyone is unhappy that everything is the same old same old.Kill X monster 100 times and you level.Or spend X amount of hours raiding a dungeon for 1 peace of equipment.
My point is everyone including myself thought that online games would advance over the past several years and it just hasnt happened. These same MMO's we are playing now are basilcaly the same thing we played 8 years ago.Just sugarcoat everything with graphics updates and make "promises of what you are planning to do but they never do".Thats what pisses the players off the most at games. The devlopers are always promising we are gonna do this ,this and this and its all gonna be like nothing you have ever seen before.Well guess what, they just lie to keep you spending money to keep there bills payed. And it angers a lot of people because everyone wants to play something new.
AOC is trying to break the mold with there "interactive" combat, and they may be sucessful. But they promised so many thing 2 years ago and only half of it will make it live may 20th(dont ask me how i know=p

what most devs probably think about this :1 - "10 millions love WoW, so just create a WoW clone and profit"
2 - "10 millions hating WoW doesnt mean 10 millions will love you 'different than WoW concept'".
1st statement is biased
2nd is right.

Thats was deep as hell.So very true.
So is the reason people don't just dislike a game but hate and want it to fail is because of the frustration over the poor state of the industry? How will a game failing make the situation better? Instead won't a game failing put it into the heads of devs "better not do what they did, just make a copy of WoW to be safe"?
I think its because of the amount of time that people invest that makes them real bitter if the game doesnt live up to expectations.
I must confess that even if I rationnally wants each and every game to succeed.
On an emotional level, I feel satisfaction when some games fail. Games which could have been made fun for me with very little efforts but where not adjusted...
I wish WAR all the best success and all...but if it doesn't reach the million subs or even worser, take a dump, I will smile evilly. Same with any other game.

This topic went off the rails very fast.
The reason individuals on this message board want games to fail and close is not because of the industry or evolution of the genre or other crap like that, they want games to fail because of vindication.
For example, a lot of people here hate WoW, they think it is a bad game so they can not fathom why it is far and away the most popular MMO in the world. How could a game they think sucks possibly be so popular? If WoW was to suddenly fail and close down forever then it would mean that they were right, WoW sucked.
The better a MMO does the more people will hate it. Which is why the hate for WoW is so intense.
When people on message boards have an opinion that is contradictory to the opinion of the masses they will vent their frustration by lashing out against what they dont like and the people that do like it.
Because we're a bunch of lazy, sadistic, cynical bastards.
And life can't be lived any other way.
I might not like certain games, but wishing for them to fail is just stupid.
What I personally wish for is for developers to try new things, break away from the flavor of the month and make something that will advance MMOs.
I don't really like WoW, but I am glad it happened because it opened the genre to a whole new generation of players. The MMO Playerbase has increased tenfold because of WoW. WoW showed new players it was OK to try MMOs and not fear the genre. Now all we need is for others to make newer, more exciting games. Games that might take a cue from what WoW did best; Don't scare the players off early in the game and let the game evolve with them, not against them. And also to take cues from where WoW wasn't so strong; More endgame options, lessen the dependency on gear and items and focus more on character development and player choices.
Most people wish death on a game because they feel jaded or slighted by its developer. They shouldn't wish death or failure, but instead state why they are unhappy and move on.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
