buying a kentsfield would be kinda dumb, from my point of view, since for like 2-300 more I could get the new mobo, and a yorkfield and have better performance especialy since I do have 1066 ram. and with the resolution cranked and the AA on, the second 8800 does make a hell of a difrence so its no matter to me anyways. until I get to the point that I cant play any game on high (short of crysis) then I'll buy more. though hopefully in a week or two I'll be OCing my chip so it wont matter anyways
I dont think Yorkfield would be much an advantage at all over a kenstfield unless you didnt have to upgrade a motherboard in which case the 10% performance would be worth the little extra cash, but I think you would benefit greatly from a Nehalem. Wrap your mind around that. 4gigs of RAM, SLI 8800GTXs, new chipset mobo, AND now an Octo-Core 45nm CPU. My god thatd be the shit.

Stop using CPU codenames...
haha here:
Kentsfield= 65nm Core 2 Quad, Q6xxx series
Yorkfield= 45nm Core 2 Quad like Q9xxx series
Nehalem= Intels new CPU architecture native Dual, Quad, AND Octo Core CPU. Will be awesome.
The kentsfield and Yorkfield give roughly the same performance per hert, but the Yorkfield is slightly (like 2% faster). The thing though is the Yorkfield uses a lower multiplier so its higher strain on the FSB so youll need faster RAM and a better motherboard. But its on the 45nm rather than 65nm so less heat dissapation. they result in about the ame OCing, with the Yorkfield slightly ahead (about 10%). But the Yorkfield requires generally a newer motherboard that supports 45nm CPUs.
isnt the Nehalem the $1000 chip? no way in hell I'm going for that one I do only make min wage! beside from what Is aw on it, it was a flop. like 2% faster then the next best. the yorkfeild I'm looking at is the Xeon X3350 wich I can get for just a bit more then the Q6600, is faster and has a much larger Cashe which is something thats quite important fro games, its not all clock speed after all. the way I see it, a Q6600 while faster then what I have now, isnt worth it compared to whats out there. so really the only thing that makes the yorkfeild more expensive is the mother board. but ultimatly I'd much rather just OC my e6600 that'll be more effective then buying a q6600 and keeping it stock, and its much cheaper. if only the q6600 hadnt been twice as much as the e6600 when I bought this all. but oh well my comp looks like its the most over killed one here so I'm stoked

lol I know what the codenames are, but I was just trying to say you could just say e.g. "Q6000's" or "Q9000's". So allot more people would know what your talking about . And I cant wait for the Octo-Core also , though it will have nearly the same issues in the future as the quad has now where most apps are only optimized to run a max for 4 cores...

Well the majority of the programs that are being optimized for quad-cores are actualy just going multi-core usuable. its usually about 8 cores they are going up to now. But even though only a few programs do this the main thing thisll help with, which is teh most important to me is multi-tasking. this octo-core will be a multi-beast!
Nahalem isnt the $1000 chip, dont know what your thinking of, maybe extreme editions? Nahalem isnt out yet but its Intels new architecture, its going to be native Quad cores and native Octo-Cores. Itll be the same price as new chips when they are released. Probably Yorkfield prices right now.
okay, I thought it was one of the $1000 chips, that also needed like a $500 mobo, I was reading something about some new intel chip like that, that didnt even run faster then the prior chips. I though it was Nahalem but I guess it wasnt. either way though I still cant see that being cheep though. would be sweet if it was justs gonna have to save up like crazy over the summer

If he chooses to upgrade to Nehalem he will have to buy DDR3 ram, since the new chipsets for Nehalem will all be DDR3. Not to mention, it will probably be another year before we see an affordable Nehalem (maybe a bit less) because the Nehalem CPU coming out in late 2008 is going to be +$1000.
Just saying if he waits, he will be waiting for awhile. He should just try to overclock his current CPU for now.

And Jesus Christ! EVERYONE has a Q6600!
It is a very nice CPU though. High-end performance for a mid-end price.

My one and only, It started off as a $500 eBay buy, from there I just keep upgrading.
NVIDIA
It's also got 600w ATX power supply and I just moved it into a new case with front and back fans.
Sorry about the neat-ness!
