The next BIG MMO is....

Binny45Binny45 Member UncommonPosts: 522

one that will come from a relatively unknown company, with unknown people who do it, not for profit, but for a love of the game.

It is my belief that being limited by the demands of investors limit creativity and often result in games that are released WAY too early, often leading to their unfortunate demise.

It's my hope that soon, one will rise from the ranks that will establish itself as a true, 3rd generation MMO.

Are there any takers out there?

The next big MMO will be AOC I'm afraid. It will soon be all about the big 3.

    AOC

    WoW

    WAR

Then Blizzard will come along and announce their next MMO and it'll be all about that. I don't see much hope for BioWare TBH.

Not that it'll ever happen, but I'd really like to see a sandbox MMO.  Straight skills, set in the movies of Indiana Jones.

Have you played AoC?  It makes for a great XBox 360 game, but as far as PC MMO's go, there's too much instancing, and for the first 20 levels WAY too much being led by the nose.

Don't get me wrong, the graphics are amazing, the combat system is different (though not as revolutionary as I thought it would be), and it will earn it's NC-17 rating.

If you like playing many alts to try different classes, you will have to play through the first 20 lvls single player game each time, unless you get one character to lvl 80.  The death animations are REALLY cool, but if you have multiple enemies on you, it can actually cause you to die as you dramatically remove someones head from their shoulders due to his three friends still wailing on you.  There is a LOT of instancing, something that I personally don't like in an MMO because it ruins the immersion factor, though there are those out there that this doesn't bother.  The last point is more a matter of personal taste.

The game has a very console feel to it.  It's not a bad thing, but unfortunately after pining for this game for years, following it's every move, I've decided I'm going to let it pass.  Would I recommend that people try it out?  Most certainly.  Will it do new and different things?  Somewhat.  Is it the "Almighty WoW killer?"  I don't think so.

I believe it will have a firm and loyal fan base.  I think the customers that Funcom gets, they will keep.  But I don't believe the game will have a broad enough appeal to come anywhere near WoW's numbers.

WAR I can't comment on just yet due to NDA.  I don't mind saying this due to the Open Beta going on.

I will reiterate that it will be a smaller studio that will look at what players want, without having people in business suits breathing over their shoulders that will come up with the next big thing.  This site has listed on it WAY too many games that are only rehashing what's already been done.

There's plenty of good ideas and just as many viable licenses that can be made into some great MMO's.  It is how these companies proceed that will dictate whether they succeed or not.  To be honest, I grow bored with the majority of offerings.  I'm praying (and PRAYING) that someone comes out with something that will shock us like a cold splash of water on a really hot day.   It will offer something for everyone, appeal to multiple facets of online gaming, and allow for a TRUE sense of online community, not the hollow husk that seems to be the mainstay of a lot of the current MMO's.

Great discussion though, and please keep the points coming.  This is why we are here. :)

My bet goes on CCP's World of Darkness MMO.

Subscribtions: EVE, SWTOR WOW, WAR, DDO, VG, AOC, COV, FFXI, GW, RFO, Aion
    +plenty of F2P, betas, trials

Female Dwarf player: WOW, VG, WAR, DDO
    .
Due to the recent economic crisis and spending cuts the light at the end of the tunnel was turned off. Sincerely, God.

im totally convinced real life is the next big mmo for folks looking for next big mmo, lets face it we all have been there done that cvomplained about it so much that they really cannot come out with something all of us are going to agree on .

i think the next big mmo will be for the new generation of mmo players it will be there first and long after we all have moved on they will take our place on these boards probebly asking the same questions and getting the same answers:)

Some lead and some follow I prefer to stand beside!

If by big you mean sub numbers than it won't be by a company that is totally unknown. My money would be on WAR having the second highest sub number to WoW, and then when 38Studios finished their MMO, with the artist who does the Spawn comics among other things, and with the writer known as R.A Salvatore, it will likely be a huge hit.

I can't imagine a project with the both of them working on flopping. 38studios.com

Certainly not AoC. What I read in the posts from the NDA breakers, makes it quite sure that this game will be so-so at best, it not a total flop. It has the potential to become better over time, but without a successful start, there won't be enough funds for development after release. Therefore I don't expect it to become big.

WAR might attract a lot of people.

The Bioware MMO, whatever it is, has a very high budget, which is one good condition for creating a big MMO. Also their hype management is unsurpassed so far...

38 studios has a lot of interesting people working on it, but famous names are not a guarantee (see Vanguard or Tabula Rasa). Could be big. Not sure.

Fallen Earth is the most hopeful niche game I can see. Could be quite good, though not big.

Most MMORPG's follow the EQ -> Wow formula. Sadly EQ threw out a lot of what was good from UO and MUDS before then. (briefly skill based systems, with freer more open gameplay relying on player generated content for the hook). I blame McQuaid personally. Really the fact that EQ was a great comercial success (followed by WAR) cemented the inclusion of some of these dull shallow grind orientated mechanics. They also locked out some of the great stuff that had existed before. Unil devs take a step back to the root and re-examine what was fun there we are stuffed.

I am hoping Darkfall might capture some of this old school magic in a shiny new package. Hell it osen't need to be shiny, there where text based muds that where more exiting than whats around now. Of course I am sceptical they can pull it off but still hope they do.  Things like spellborn look like they might be a sleeper ready to awaken too.

I've heard rumors that Microsoft has released the rights to the Shadowrun license.  My inner child would scream with glee if an MMO was made for this license.  The only catch would be it would have to be done by those that had played the pen and paper MMO.  The FPS game that was released was a VERY poor representation of the game, and other than the races (which looked horrible) had nothing to really do with the original RPG.

    Aion imo.

It has the same gamestyle as wow in both pvp and pve. But with awesome graphics, fantastic combat animations, a lot more character customization and flight pvp too.

Btw this gave me an idea, why not make a poll to sum all the answers.

I think i make a new post in the same section with a poll in it. Feel free to take a look and give ur vote

If you mean, the next MMO with WOW like subs, then Id say none of them.  We probably wont see that happen again for a long while...hopefully.

If you mean, the next revolutionary MMO, then Id say it will be something out of the 2009-2011 crop.  There are many, really interesting, ambitious MMOs in the works right now, we just have to wait and see how they turn out.

  • Binny45Binny45 Member UncommonPosts: 522

Hehe, aye, I should have been more specific.  A game doesn't necessarily NEED 10 million plus subs to be the "next big thing"....but it helps. :)

I would love to see MMO's go back to not just being a game, but a community as a whole.  There is NO reason why a person cannot PvE, PvP, Craft, hang out, buy land, build stuff, make stuff, fish, etc, etc.  The limits are only placed there by our imaginations....and the investors that are paying for the games of course hehe. ;)

This is why I think it will be a relatively unknown company that will bring about success through a true and pure attempt at providing solid MMO goodness.   Why?  Because smaller companies tend to have more control over their product, including it's release dates.  Their expectations are also not nearly as high.

For example:  Could you imagine being on the dev team for the next Blizzard MMO that's in the works?  Imagine the amount of stress that those people are under.  They've got HUGE shoes to fill, and loads to prove to the gaming community.  Granted, Blizzard often puts out quality products that are very easy to pick up and play, but will this be the time they fumble?  Can they afford such a thing, with the whole world watching?

In the meantime, two guys working out of their basement, who for nothing more than the shear love of the game, develop an online world that blows people away.  Through simple word of mouth, their numbers grow for testing.  As interest is generated, money is offered to them, but now they know they have control and can dictate terms to a certain extent.

The companies out there know there's big money in MMO's, it's the only type of computer game out there that brings in monthly revenue something that the gaming market desperately CRAVES.

I'd REALLY love to see some input here from some gaming company reps to get their input on this.  Me? I'm just a guy who LOVES MMO's, and hates to see good ideas disappear due to bad planning, bad implementation, or investor pressure.

The game I am really looking forward to playing...

1.)  Fallen Earth.  Sandbox and cool setting, and not that far off.

2.)  Bioware makes great games, have no reason to believe the MMO will be any different.

3.)  If Earthrise can deliver what is promised, it may be the next big one.

    Tecmo Bowl.

    I agree with Aion.

It gathers features from WoW,Guildwars and Lineage II. 3 of the best MMO currently out.

Make the poll FFandDB its great idea

Guildwars isn't an MMO and Lineage II isn't even big anywhere outside of Asia.

Next big MMO is Darkfall. All others are the same crap again and again.

Its kinda sad that some people think that the next game to offer a different mindless repetative grind is going to be the next big thing. Its refreshing that most think that a newer, fresher, more open mould breaking game will be the thing.

Personally I think the answer lies in "player generated" content. You give the players the tools and they take care of the end game. This can be as simple as having players that are 'councilllors' setting parameters for the cities they look after to as complex as letting the players build the cities themselves. In UO simply allowing players to write scrolls generated huge amounst of history, back stories, lore, adventures etc.

  • grimfallgrimfall Member UncommonPosts: 1,153

Due to the cost of making these games, it's really unrealistic to expect that 'the next big thing' is going to come from one of these boutique studios, but I do agree that rehashing the EQ/WoW gameplay isn't going to take a game to the top spot, no matter how well it is done.

LoTRO is an almost flawless game in that mode, by almost all reports a better game than WoW, with a better license, a smoother launch and they're languishing at  what I would guess is fewer than 500K subscribers.

Hopefully Turbine's failure will show these publishers that 'out WoWing WoW' won't do it, and they'll start to look for the revlutionary games.

You haven't been following the game nor do bring facts because Age of Conan is zoned not instances. Age of Conan will bring something new to the table besides the sandbox mmorpgs nowadays. It's to bad you decided to walk out and plus the pve beta is coming out in couple of days.

It uses dynamic zones. So more than NNN characters in whites sands it will create white sands 2.

If by next BIG MMO you mean successful with sales this is what i would say - Right now its AoC this is pretty much a fact if you look at what im going to write next .....

    - Already went gold as far as units go(means they are selling alot of pre-orders)

    - Already sold out of their 90 dollar (yes 90 US dollars) Collector's Edition at most of their retailers

    - Have enough people interested in their product to basically charge the public 7 dollars (check my posts in other threads there is a link to the 6.95 single monthly sub deal) for a chance at 1 of 50000 beta keys

After Aoc dies down a bit WAR will be the next BIG MMO - then will cycle back to WoW's expansion and back through those 3 as they release new content.

AoC > WAR > WoW      .....then recycle  for about the next 2 years

As for TCoS and Aion etc - these games are good but cant compete with the 3 players named in terms of a BIG MMO.

I play a lot of games...
