I've been playing Lineage 2 for about a month or so and really do like the game. The grind put me off a little a first, but the pacing of the combat help offset it, I think. I've gotten into a clan academy and everyone there seems pretty nice...when they are on.

And therein lies the problem I'm currently facing with this game.

At any given time, there's not but maybe one or two guild members on at a time, and maybe 2-3 academy peeps. So I end up grinding for about 1-2 hours for mats and/or Adena. Not that I'm bitching about that, sometimes that's all I want to do is grind.

So, getting to the point of this post. This game seems very empty. Not contentwise, mind you. Populationwise. There are at times nary a soul besides me in town.

I know most players are higher level than I, therefore are probably in the higher level areas. But come on! Am I to assume that in the 4 years this game's been around, there's not one other newbie out there?

Then you are in the wrong clan. And sure, there are new players, but if they aren't turned off by the game they are being snatched up by other clans and alliances.

Otherwise, do not assume that you will find a lot of pick up groups.

Also, what server are you on? Is it a lower pop server?

I think you need to change clans in any case, sorry.

Indeed, I've considered the fact that I'm not in the right clan, despite the fact that the people are very friendly and helpful. So I think I am seriously going to look for another clan, one who is a little more active. There's one thing though that I'm curious about. My current clan has helped me get my academy gear. Does that disappear or something if I leave? Will my next clan have to help me get it again?

As for what server I'm on, since I had no idea about servers when I started, I chose Bartz.

But here lately, all the servers have read light except for the Euro servers, and only one of those ever registers heavy.

Clan Oath armour does not disapear. You just can't wear it if you're not in the clan or subclan. The graduation tiara or headpiece is the only trinket you are allowed to retain which distinguishes you as an academy graduate.

Before you leave your clan I would raise the issue with the clan leader. Send him a pm on your msg boards or perhaps an e-mail, and write down your issues. He'll do two things, either acknowledge your issue and do something about it or tell you to dry your eyes princess and harden up. Either way you'll have your answer and can proceed accordingly.

The public boards are not really the place to seek this sort of advice because it shows you have no trust in your leadership or your clan mates who should be your first point of contact. Either way good luck with your efforts and I wish you a successful resolution of your issues.

    Edit

WRT your original question, the world is very large now and ppl do tend to be sheltered by their clans a lot more now. This doesn't mean you will be spoon fed but clan exclusive groups are more and more prevalent as you must remember unlike other MMOs L2 IS a persistent competitive game. Pickup groups are problematic in L2 and the more competitive and/or successful  your clan the greater the degree of paranoia that you may be infiltrated by your competitors... Sounds like fun, no ?

Pick up groups are also more difficult as you get higher because it takes more effort for groups to get into the the "tighter and harder" spots where levelling is good. Then there is the issue of bots. Some ppl will be happy to kill them and live with the reprecussions and others will not. This is a difficult issue for casual or dual box players who can become persistent  victims of  bot protectors once they are identified as casual players. This doesn't happen too often but you may find that certain areas may become "locked down" to you and without clan help its easy to get bullied.

For a point of contrast on what to expect from clans and how clans are becoming shaped in L2, have a look at the Warhammer Online Age of Reckoning latest news letter, and their vide on "living guilds". It pretty accurately describes the current competitive L2 guild framework. Its pretty spot on WRT clan rep points and their rise and fall due to raids and PvP/Sieges and what not. Clan buffs, access to Fortress and Castle Vendors for restricted goods, direct regional tax benefits from castle ownership etc etc its all there in L2...So much for originality ;) P j/k.

Good luck to them in stitching their ideas together though, if they can pull it off it will make WAR a very attractive competitor to L2 for the PvP enthusiasts.

You are REALLY in the wrong clan if you're on Bartz and having this issue. You need to find another one, ASAP.

And what towns are these that you find completely empty? Are you hanging out in Schuttgart or something? There are certain towns that are more favored by players than others. You'll always find people in Dion, Giran, Aden, Goddard and Rune. The other towns are more out of the way and players mainly just port in and out quickly as they go to their hunting grounds.

There are also certain areas to xp that are more popular than others. I don't know what level you are, but through D-grade, Execution Grounds and Heretics Catacomb are pretty popular.

Basically, they've made it very easy to just zoom through the first 52 levels, so if you're just hanging out taking your time, you're not going to find many people.

Just as an aside, L2 is not really a game of pick-up groups anymore. Back when the game was new, pick up groups were the norm, the way most of us made friends, met our clans, made enemies, etc. But somewhere along the way, (both from changes in the game as it was updated/expanded and through the leveling up of the player base) pick-up groups faded away and people learned to rely on their clans/allies for groups. When you're in a party, you have to trust the people you're with - that they'll play their class well so you don't all die, that they'll stick up for you and not run if there's pvp, that they'll not SOE the moment they pick up a good drop, etc. Most of the time you're more comfortable trusting people in your clan/ally than someone you don't know.

That being said, you have more of a chance of finding a pick up group in a catacomb or necropolis than just standing around in town or hunting in some random area. Pick-up groups are good for newbies because it does help them find friends. And I believe that there are more pick-up groups at the lower levels than at the higher levels.

I hope you'll find a better clan! Good luck!

you need to get a new clan man their are alot of them!!!!

Thanks for all the insight and advice you guys!

My problem however isn't finding someone for a pick-up group or a grinding buddy. I'm concerned that if I quit my current clan, that there's simply not enough people playing for me to find another one. But judging by the flood of responses in this and the official Lineage forums, it seems my fears are somewhat superficial.

I'm fully aware that this game focuses more on group play and clan cooperation, hence why I started feeling out for one once I hit 20. I just need to find one that more active, or else being in one is completely moot.

The low level areas are pretty empty.

Dion is the first major pop center.

Also log in during a Sat or Sun and watch a siege at a crystal in town. That should make you feel better.
