A class that I would like to play is a "Doppleganger"
This class would work in transforming your character into any NPC or player you see and gaining all the abilities and spells of the NPC/player you are cloning.
of course the effects would only be temporary and your normal form would be considerably squishy as most Dopplegangers travel in the nude or clone armors out of raw materials found in the world, such as barkskin or Ironskin.
Some sort of self-morphing class. Druids come close, but they are completley different in execution.
A true engineering/tinkering class would be cool to. A class that can build and use devices attached to the body or turrets of some sort, all sorts of funky traps and bombs and gizmos.
A spirit class would be cool. You are a ghost of whatever race. You play by "possesing" mobs in the world. Once you have possessed a mob of your level you use its HP and powers to communicate with the living to do quest/grind. When you level you can leave to old mob and get a new higher level one. If you possessed body is killed your kicked out and can be attacked directly. Killing your ghost form effects you like a normal player death. Gear would be a strange thing to handle for this class but something could be worked out.
I've never seen a tank that can cast devastating offensive spells. Like a wizard/fighter type. I always see the fighter/healer combo that have the weak offensive spells.
Maybe a better question to begin with would be: what other archetype would you like to see?
I think the standards we have might be Tanks, DPS, Healers, Buffers/Debuffers
Classes generally fit into one of those categories, or are mix of two, sometimes three of them.
What else do we need to do in game besides absorb damage, deal damage, heal the damage, and make others do less or more damage or take less or more damage?
Whew!
Different classes just do the above in a different way or to a different degree. For instance A tank might use armor or forcefields, but it's still performing the same role. Some classes might do DPS with a spells or with sharks with lazer beams, but they're still DPS.
EDIT: I'm not saying this is all we NEED to do, but in a general sense that's what a lot of the gameplay in mmorpgs are- whether they are PvP or not. Of course there is Crowd Control, Stealth, and other aspects that could be considered too.
I know some argue to get rid of classes altogether. I rather like them.
So, I think your question is valid. But that just puts a spin on it, because right now I can think of a few classes, but they each fit into one of the archtypes above.
I know there's some good thinking to do here - but I'm a bit burnt by the week. I'll keep going though

I got to go with Provacation like Ultima Online. Its been done but that was 12 years ago. BTW im playing on a free server that is pre Lord Blackthorns Revenge expansion and it is still awsome, so glad i started playing again.
Anyways a Provoker plays music to entice 1 creature to attack another creature. Plus how about animal tamers, i havent played all the mmo's so im not sure if they have been done to death or not
Funny you should mention. I have made a horde guild on Ravenholdt called <Attorneys At Large>. The guildleader is Habeas Corpsus (rogue) and my warrior Juris Diction.
I think what games are really lacking is something other than: Magic, Pet, Bash/Slash/Stab or Shoot as an option. It's a tall order that requires more thinking, but would be quite the payoff. A Changling would be nice. You are who you fight. That'd be a challenge.
this is a great topic, i cant even remember the last time i was compelled to log in to these forums.
anyhow, i think summoner, the only game that got it right was FF11, great premise, fantastic summons, huge variety, GREAT support characters and awesome teammates to have for parties
i have yet to play another mmo that has a decent summoner class, most of them are just trash
Dueler. This dedicated class can only fight and advance when a challenge is accepted in a one-on-one duel. They are far removed from Goldshire...er...public places due to their annoying reputation. They cannot heal, they fight with toothpicks and wear swimtrunks or bikinis. This will prevent them from challegening non-duelers to a duel.
The Tranquilizer. Armed to the teeth with a taser, tranq darts and knock-out gas. They render their victims/monsters unconscious, take the quest reward and be on their merry way. The monster wakes up able to fight later on. This will reduce respawing and mobs may show stitches where required quest organs were removed.
Something like a politician would be kind of cool. Gaining influence, money and power by way of speech and/or corrupt methods such as bribery and extortion. Someone who isn't seen on the battlefield, but plays a big part in the war itself.
The clown. His powers will amaze you. He has a bellowing laugh that will bring any enemy to its knees. And how about that gear of his? Equipped with party balloons and powerful flower squiter, he is more than a match for the mightiest opponent. Tremble and fear at the sight of the mischievous clown.

Ro and Ro2 has clown. Though they are called Ministrel outside from Korea.
Though not in your way, *4am makes my eyes blurr away it seems*

That's an Dark avenger, Dark templer etc etc etc. Seen loads of Fighter mages.
though that lawyer would be awesome ingame!

classless is what is missing .. no class just infinite skillz .. now that would fix everything lol. where what skills you have and appearance have absolutely nothing to do with each other.
yes lol where on one character you can do everything the game has to offer and do as much of it or as little of it you want. Player freedoms is what is missing most from new games.
Shapeshifter/Camelon. Not necessarily a hybrid, can copy abilities of their foes they are fighting at the moment, but not as powerful, while having powers of their own that are. Could be an interesting class to play.

That may sound cool, but it's too impractical. Skills are built upon other related skills. A person doesn't become a great musician by playing football. They have to practice their art long and hard. By the same token, a character who wants to be a master fighter doesn't do so by reading a spell book and vice-versa. That's why no character should be able to learn all things in the scope of a single game. They must specialze. That's why there are classes. Whether skill-based or level-based, classes are a good thing.

Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
A God based MMO. Thor, Athena, Zeus,Kratos(from God of War hehe) etc. would all make good classes and has tons of lore to draw from.

No classes at all....a skill based system...

I would love to know how a "Forum Moderator"-class would look like to be honest.
