AMD or Intel

MysilMysil Member Posts: 11

Hello all, I am looking to build a new system within the next three weeks and seeking advice on the best choice. I am planning on spending around $2,000. Ive been checking Newegg, and I can purchase a top of the line AMD Phenom 9850 2.5Ghz quad core chip with a top of the line  AMD motherboard and 8 GB of DDR2 ram for almost the same price as a Quad core intel chip at 2.4Ghz and 4 GB of DDR2 and middle range intel motherboard. Also im wondering weather to go with an ATI video card or Nvidia. Either way im planning on buying the top of the line video card. I was pretty much ready to purchase a high end motherboard to use DDR3 memory and also invest in 4GB of DDR3, until I read alot of bad stuff on errors ect, any advice? Thanks in advance.

Why did you choose to post this in the AoC thread?

AMD is generally better. Ive always had that, except for the one time I had ME, and then I had an intel machine. Didnt run as well as the AMDs Ive had since.

And you want 3ghz in your processor.

Nvidia 8800 gt is the best for gaming. Ive had atis before this exclusively. Nvidia seems to do gaming a lot better for some reason.

Probly because hes buying the comp to play AoC? I did that with my vid card... so I could play the game without dropping everything to low settings.

Thanks for the advice. The highest AMD quad core I can see is 2.5 ghz. Do I have to overclock it to get 3ghz?

Also do you think 1 Nvidia 9800 series with 1gb of ram will be enough to run AoC with all the bells and whistles?

That's an interesting response. From what I've read (on both Intel and AMD forums), Intel has dominated AMD in the past year or two. And will continue to dominate for at least the next year or two.

That doesn't mean AMD isn't making decent procs at their price point. But if you want the better machine, go Intel.

    (I currently have an AMD)

Amd vs Intel debate has been raging since the two were first started making procs. My first rule is, read reviews, but dont believe everything you read. They can say they are unbiased all they want. But they are human, and are going to be biased to a certain degree. So if youve always used Intel, and like it better than AMD, by all means get it.

In other words, dont be a sheep. ^.^

I have heard from more than one person that AMD is generally better for gaming. Don't quote me though. My new comp is coming with AMD, so I might as well give it a shot.

The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Mine is an Amd athalon 64 x2, 4600+. Not sure what the ghz is on mine... but its enough to run the game quite well. The only time I get lag is when I open the inventory windows... oddly enough.

kitsunegirl, which year do u come from? Ever since core2duo came out, intel > amd, and its not the time of who have the higher ghz anymore ever since the failures of pentium D.

Anyways, i would go for a intel, a q6600 or a e8400. Both of these chips outperforms and outprice their amd counterparts, and these c2d chips overclocks so easy you won't even believe. My q6600 started with 2.4ghz stock, bought a 30bux HSF, and now its running at 3.4.

i would go for a intel, e8500 overclocked to 4ghz-4.2ghz with air cooling or 4.5-4.8 with extreme liquid cooling. quadcore sux at overclocking u can get a quad core to 3.8 with liquid cooling...

    i recommend 8800gt overclocked or 8800gtx overclocked.

unless you just want to spend that kind of money ...

The Intel  6600 is a great chip but is over 200 dollars .. for the money its very hard to beat AMD.

I just upgraded 2 computers (motherboards, processors, video cards, and 2 gigz or ram each) for

    only $400  dollars each!

the motherboards where biostar A770 A2+ boards, i needed new boards because i wanted the new PCI 2.0 video cards.

AMD 5600+ duel core processors 2.9Ghz

PNY Geforce 9600 GT video cards with 512 DDR3 ram

and 2Gz of Gskill duel channel RAM

Me and my wife can run our computers on max settings getting around 84-90 FPS out side the cities, and 50-60 FPS inside the cities .. very seldom notice lag and loads between area's are fast. I really believe

that the biggest difference here though is the video cards and the use of the PCI 2.0 boards. the 9600 cards are 90% faster than the 8600 cards and the PCI 2 has twice the bandwidth of the normal PCI cards.

i used the DVD drives and hard drives from my old computers .. can save a lot of money and run AOC just fine .  Hope this helps

So your advising me to stay away from a quad-core chip and get a duo core chip? I can build a computer pretty easy but I don't know anything about overclocking or how to even do it.

Just get an a-bit motherboard, they have an easy software clocking ability on them... Easy to use and understand and keeps an eye on stuff so you dont overheat.

Intel is leading the processor war at the moment (Check a bench test). Both Core 2 duo and quad are easy to clock, My reccomendation is a Core2 3.0 Ghz

Thanks Loke. Any advice on the graphics card? ATI or NVidia? I can get two of the top ATI cards and SLI them for the price of the new Nvidia. Also I was planning on going with 8 GBs of DDR2 1066. However I have just read that Harddrives in raid config will really help your loading times ect. Now I was planning on going with a 150GB basic Hard drive. Should I go with 4 GB of ram to free up some cash to get a raid config hard drive? I normally don't mind loading times but from what ive read, you can listen to an entire song from start to finish with a basic hard drive...that would test even my patience eventually.

ATI-better graphics, Nvidia-better performance the graphics arent much of a difference from Nvidia and the performance isnt either, but heck If you say you can get 2 of the top ATI cards for one top Nvidia price go for the ATI if its that much cheaper and you wana save money SLI or crossfire I hear doesnt work so well with AoC so just get one for now.

No such thing as luck, just believing in it is what makes it real to you and really...thats all you need.

Im on nobodies' side but my own.

Well Intel has better quality chips with lower temps so if you are like me and get anal about temps than an e8400 is a good choice, straight forward and easy overclocking. Don't waste your money on ddr3 if that hasnt been stated already.  Also get a cpu cooler. If your building the pc yourself you should be able to make a mammoth machine with 2000.
