It is very simple, no matter how much the game "sucks" or is incomplete funcom made a wise decision:
If they polished the game up more the release would have fallen back to this fall or even later, with big competitors like WotlK, WAR, TCOS and mayb even Aion coming out by then.. then even IF AoC was a great game and far better then it is now they would NEVER have gotten over 500k box sales.
In a few months this game will be polished and better, then the xbox version will be a good product and other big competitors like WAR just start out and i honestly dont see a bug free mmo launch coming up.
So FC released the game early, but since there is noting new to play these days and no other big games are coming up soon FC has all the time to polish the game with the big amount of money the box sales alone gave. Sure they may have lost a lot of players forever of for a couple of months but the sales still stand and there will be enough people left playing cause i cant see the numbers (which may now be near 600k or higher) fall to under 100k subs after just 1 month.
My point really is, u can bitch about this game all u want but FC simply made a good decision.

Captain obvious to the rescue I see.
Too early to draw any conclusions. If they waited maybe they would have sold less games but kept a higher number of subscribers for a longer time. It's just impossible to know the answer to this and since you cant compare you will never know.
Personally I'm guessing they did the right thing cause even if more polished I fail to see how this game can compete against WotLK and Warhammer Online. WoW has maybe the best PVE and Warhammer most likely the best PVP. Conan offer both but is good at none.
the mmo market is saturated, they get away with less quality cause of less competition
who knows they might even hold unto more subs right now then they could ever get with a release between wotlk and war

Aha, so wow has the best pve and war will have the best pvp? I say WoW has the worst PVE and WAR will have one of the worst PVP.
Games that will always have better PVP than the linear WAR RVR system are sandbox games like EVE or Shadowbane (and hopefully upcoming Earthrise/Darkfall).
REALITY CHECK
Completely agree. It was a very savvy business decision and one that pays off in spades.
I just want to see FC spend those profits wisely.
/agree completely
It was buisness - Had nothing to do with gaming.
But...
Gamers care about gaming - They don't care about buisness.
Thats why AOC will have less than 100k subs on half empty servers in 6 months time. Because Funcom has shown they are not here for the gamers.
So.. Smart ?
To the contrary I believe that FunCom will deliver and that many of those who quit now will resubscribe in 6 months.
Uhmmm ....
