You know I'm thinking I may load WoW up and level my rogue alt. Infact noo i wont the more i think of wow the more i realise its a mindless quest for gear and mroe gear. I really need a good social guild city ravaging mmo
Wurm onilne, it's a bit hard to get into at first but it's a build a city destroy others cities type game and it's pretty hard to solo so you have the social guild thing.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You? if I were to kill a titan tomorrow and no CCP employees showed up to say grats I would petition it. Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro if hp < 30 then CastSpell("heal") SpellTargetUnit("player") else CastSpell("smite") end
Vanguard is fun for awhile. I kinda get sick of the click to attack junk after awhile the games all feel like they run together. If you haven't tried vanguard, give it a go.
Other then that Guild Wars is kinda fun, switching up your skills and all.
Personally, I'm playing Phantasy Star Universe. Its different, if you haven't played it before give it a go. Even if you don't play it online you can play it offline (although I don't find it as fun).
I’m currently not subscribed to anything as well. Being an old time war/strategy gamer, I’ve been playing winSPWW2, which is like Steel Panthers, if any of you remember playing that (it’s a free download by the way).
I was also playing Knights of The Old Republic. Never actually finished that, and gave it up a long time ago, but now have been really enjoying the story (which I don’t normally do in video games).
Completely worn out on MMOs as well, so I know where you are coming from. I recently tried the AOC open beta, couldn’t stand it, especially the “enhanced” combat, which made my fingers hurt and gave me a migraine after playing it for about 10 minutes.
I then went back to EQ for the free summer of play for past subscribers. Long story short is I absolutely loved it back then, but now it seems unbelievably drab and monotonous.
I’m not sure exactly why MMOs have been turning me off lately. I’ve actually been thinking quite a bit about this, and I can only come up with one semi-reasonable answer. The communities I’m finding in most MMOs nowadays are beyond horrible.
I’m one to play these games for enjoyment and to escape reality for a while. However, what I’m finding is the same rude, obnoxious, pre-teen, wanabee’s that you find in real life have now invaded most MMOs. It wasn’t always like this (and I know it’s not like this for one or two of them out there). When MMOs were young and new, I believe only the computer “nerds” and fantasy “geeks” were the majority of players. Ever since, dare I say WoW, when MMOs were brought into the mainstream, you got this influx of all types of people who really brought down the caliber of the players in my opinion.
Where before you had open chat discussions relating to the game and a funny tidbit now and then, you now get various obscenities, rude behavior, off color humor, and a multitude of Chuck Norris jokes. It’s quite sad really. What’s even worse is the developers catering to these people for fear of losing their “base” of players. It’s simply all about money now, where the developers promise the investors certain figures, and in order to meet those expectations, they cave into allowing this to continue for fear of losing their players.
Well, I went WAY off on a tangent. I would recommend as some others suggested, take a break and play the MMO called Real Life. You’ll find it’s much more rewarding.

Don't forget the bored stay-at-home wives. ~13 years ago when I first got into MMOs (The Realm Online, Worlds Away) I seemed to make friends with a number of them - and they were awesome, always ready to chat, interesting, and (mostly) very friendly. If I had a kid who was online playing MMOs, I'd want them hanging out with that crowd.
So now I'm holding out for Hello Kitty Online and its target market of "office ladies" . (A little tongue-in-cheek, but I'm not entirely joking.)

I unfortunately have to agree. I'm bored out of my mind. I've played AoC, EQII, EQ, WoW, been there done that.. Nothing will match the feeling I had in EQ. And hell, even before tBC, I loved WoW. I thought it was incredible.. I remember being bombarded in the crossroads, so noob I had no idea wht to do, except, hit the level 40 guy while I was level 13.. and die miserably, over and over, then follow the horde level 60s on a revenge gank.. Then came the popularity of battlegrounds. Then TbC.. Then, imo... MMO's died. It's over, guys. Play Crysis, it's amazing.
The concept of Wurm Online is great but the interface and interactions are just incredibly painful.
Wurm Online + polish and smooth interaction of WoW would be something I would play in a heartbeat.
i agree 100%, but it's the best option so that's what I'm playing. Then again if another game came out that had the polish and smooth interaction of WoW, and the interface customization (so not Lotro or AoC), I would probably play that.

I just had to respond to your post because I believe you hit the nail on the head as to why MMO's are no longer much fun to play. I too believe that the community has alot to do with it. When I first started playing MMO's about 6 years ago things were much much different. People actually spoke to one another and held real conversations. When you met someone in game in an area where you were hunting as well they would actually introduce themselves and maybe role play their character a bit or not.
Now it seems like when someone in any game asks a question in chat they get belittled. Especially in dare I say it..WOW. When someone does invite you to group they don't even say a word just hit the button to group and if you do accept 9 times out of 10 they still don't speak to you unless it's to say something about the hunting you are doing or quest. I also find that nowdays if it doesn't help them in anyway then for the most part players don't help one another. I don't know how many games I've been in where someone will walk by while a fellow player is obviously going to be killed without so much as a , "can I help?" It is quite sad in my opinion. Where MMO's used to be getting to know your fellow players it's now about the "give me mine" mentality. I have yet to find another game with a true "community atmosphere." Not since the good old days of old Star Wars Galaxies have I seen players that actually wanted to get to know one another and be friends. Maybe someday I'll find another game that has a real community but for now I'm just as lost as the OP is. So yes I'm not on the computer as much anymore, maybe that's a good thing but I still miss the way it used to be.
I cant bring myself to play Call of Duty 4, Counter-Strike or any other fast paced FPS because.. well its just point, click, kill....YAWN.
If you're bored, get a more team based FPS to fill you until you're bored of FPSes, then return to MMOs (it's what I do to break the boredom).
The Battlefield series is okay, as you need to progress up for unlocks (and it has stat breakdowns that would make RPG stat snoops cry -- like nothing in these MMOs), and you have roles to play for your squad and team. So you may not even get to shoot much a game (especially playing support roles, commander [a form of RTS god mode] or squad leader). Think it's the only FPS type games that MMOers could tolerate.
With every genre when tired you need to switch and try another flavor. Get tired there, come back -- your toon is there and waiting to be played, again.
