Jolt Online Review 8.4 / 10

AmazingAveryAmazingAvery Age of Conan AdvocateMember UncommonPosts: 7,188

Another review in : http://jolt.co.uk/index.php?articleid=11458   scoring 8.4 just like the user base here at mmorpg.com make it.

Summing up they say:

Provided you’re not in a race to see the end of the game, Age of Conan comes as a highly recommendable MMORPG. It’s bold, brash, visceral in nature and for the first 20 levels it’s highly compelling. It’s also unfinished, somewhat unpolished and requires a fairly hefty PC to run. We have absolutely no doubt that the willpower and resources are there to bring the low level game production values into the high level game, but until that happens we suspect a lot of early adopters are going to be stepping back and watching developments over the next few months very closely.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement. They gave it an 8.4 after that comment? Odd.

"Yeah, its a great game, though players are leaving to see if FC can bring it up to release quality".

So there saying It looks nice, but Its unfinshed, unpolished, theres no end game and  don't play it for a while, and they give it a 8.4 how do these reviewers work out there scores?

Reviews like that make me wonder...really wonder if there isn't some kind of money being exchanged somewhere.

I remember reading somewhere that online reviews based in the UK are generally positive compared to US reviews in anything that is reviewed online in any market.

You could read the comments on the ratings for the gamer too here on mmorpg.com. People here gave it the same score averaged out so far.

This review is also was done a month after release, everyones experience can be completely different. For example I've seen my fair share of bugs but not as many as some peoples experience in game, i've also seen alot of bugs fixed the past few weeks too.

This review takes into consideration whats happening now over the potential, but still recognises it for what it is based on the reviewers experiences.

My thoughts generally mirror he outcome from this review in terms of experience and score given roughly.

    *PS nice pic Teala.

Its unfinished, unpolished and many launch day players will be waiting for the game to get upto par before they resubscribe. 8.4/10

Yeah... thats kinda like your english teacher saying "Your paper had no punctuation, rambles on without a point and makes no sense what so ever. So I gave you a B because I feel you will do better as time goes on."

I think that many of the reviewers these days are just giving 'safe' reviews to avoid flak and fallout from angry mobs who will be out for thier blood if the review is less than favorable. So they say what they see in other reviews/articles and setup a score based on the general consensus.

If thats Teala in RL, she's pretty good looking!

Damn! Where are all the good looking MMO nerd girls with glasses who understand when I say "you give good buff!"

    Lousey male-dominated genre..

    Edit: No offence meant Teala!

This review, like every other "8-9" score seems to be based on playing Tort and nothing after. They get a complementary game and some advertising revenue, play low-lvl tutorial then rush a score out to meet dead lines. Same every time.

It truly amazes me to see comments like this on public forums, i feel truly sorry for people who think that way. Seriously this is SAD!!!

I mean i see all sorts of KIDS speaking about anyone who might be slightly postive to be payed or a chill or whatever, seriously are we back at kindergarden school again to see such silly comments? Afcourse there might be people payed to advertise or whatever, but to comment on each thing slightly positive is really strange and i would expect better from you Teala. But then again following the carrot is what most of the complainers seem to enjoy or was it the bandwagon?

I'd say the score  8,4/10 is fair up to about level 54-55.

At this point you will have to grind, it seems.

But funcom has said that they are patching in a big new zone for the 55+ lvls early july.

So I just stopped playing my main toon and started another. Been playing PoM till now.

So I started a Barb, and I have to say; It's a completly different game now.  The combat is up close and personal and very intens. I like it :-)

So my suggestion to those who are considering bying the game:

If you are hardcore player and are only after the endgame - Wait a couple of months.

If you are a semi-hardcore player - playing till 55 with 2-3 chars will keep you happy till more content comes

If you are casual  player - I think you will be fine as it will take you at least a month to get to 50 and by then the new zones should be in place.

    That's my 2c at least.

Totally worthless review from the same site that gave PotBS 8.6 and Hellgate London 8.1

That 8.4 is a just score if you play only 1-20, and probably he didnt play after that last patch which screwed the game  (Several players outside UK experienced server kicks every 2-7 minutes).

The `patch` claims to solve the problem and we dont get kicked. But now there are 2k-17k lag spikes every 20~. The answer we got for that problem was to check our ISP and open some ports. I asked the guy how come guildmembers from Moscow, Sweden, Turkey and Ireland experience that lag spike same time if its our ISP or ports.

I want to play this game, I liked it so far. Yeah I grinded after 55, the hundred quests I did gave me just 2.5 levels. I still want to play with all the bugs... But cannot. Now I must sit here and write, cause there was only 2 persons out of 25 in our guild, who could play normally today. The others simply logged off, most of them will not renew their membership after their time ends. I still cant decide. Great game, if you can play.

T's posts are normally pretty level headed and neutral and I have to agree with what she said. Advertising money can buy a good review and it's even easier when it's based on the 1-20 content that is polished.

And now you have companies suing review sites for games getting low scoreson reviews published either before street date or a few days after.

Rather gaming industry politics. I remember Jolt as a great gaming hoster with real GM and stuff. GMs not as in "fix my broken stuff" but as in live events and roleplaying. The infamous "Atys Halequins" have been a Jolt GM roleplay and event guild for example. I remember a day where we wanted to have a campfire near the stables, because that was the crafting and chatting hub. Really a Jolt GM came and checked if this would make sense.

All european attempts to maintain mmos died. Some of them had very good mechanics. Jolt has interesst in a growing EU gaming industry ;)

    Teala deserves the 8.4...not AoC.

    LOL.

I actually had this speech teacher in college that wanted to be buddies with everyone in the class.  At the end of the semester he asked each of us what we thought we deserved as a grade.  Well, I thought he would base it off of my grades throughout the semester that I got for my presentations, which was an A.  For some stupid reason I said B though, and guess what...he gave me a B even though I should have had an A.  And all the guys that did lousy but said they deserved an A got an A.  When I asked him about it he said when you get up on stage to deliver a speech, believing in yourself is very important.

That's why, my own review is the most important to me.  I think the comments in conclusion were accurate but the grade didn't necessarily follow.  Unless someone asked Funcom, so, what score do you think you deserve?  In which case, someone over at Funcom fell into the same trap I did.

Actually that would mean someone at Funcom was smart like all the guys that did lousy.  So they didn't fall into the trap, but exploited the teacher. :p

They definitely believe in themselves when you see them saying things like "A solid launch is only the beginning."

Do you guys remember blacksac, the guy who raved about Dark and Light for the longest time and basically was the biggest fanboi you have ever seen? Yea, he reminds me of someone here...

No I don't Avery, I'm glad that you are having a good time. But all these positive reviews you post are meaningless, and you know it. Unless the reviewer has been level 80 for a while and has sieged and tried most everything, their opinion doesn't matter, at least to me.

Now if you yourself posted a review, I would take it to heart a lot more than some random magazine that raves about his Tortage experience. Considering you are level 80 and you're in a huge guild. BTW I'm just curious, have you guys sieged yet?

Thats positive and negative reviews, from people that are put up. There is plenty of negative in this review just like the previews from both sides of the fence I posted all year before release.

Tier3 stuff is just being finished up for us, we are about the same as 4/5 other guild on Cimmeria server. Not long now and the camera's will roll in sieging.

You're right, positive and negative reviews both don't mean anything unless the person is someone like Cymdai, who experienced pretty much all the game has to offer. I would rather read a review from your average joe any day of the week, whether it's good or bad.

And have fun with the sieging, put those Hand of Set guys in their place!

Dont get me wrong there are plenty of issues I've had that pissed me off, infact i've been collecting screens and writing guides for different zones on my way lvling up. Keep an eye out at mmorpg.com soon :) I have plenty to say both good and bad.

How can they give it a 8.4 and say it's unfinished at the same time?  Unfinished = max of 5 in my book, then throw in all the technical difficulties, it's a solid 2.5 at best.
