Hi there,
the list of promised features for games like Darkfall, Mortal Online or Renaissance pretty much summarizes what i am looking for in an MMORPG. Therefore my question if there is any game already out there that comes at least close to the approach taken by the above games, to pass the time until any of those games is released (i fear this might still take a long while...). So, i am looking for a game that:
- has no classes/levels and the associated grind and restrictions
- is skill based
- takes place in a low-fantasy world (by which i mean a reasonably realistic game in a fantasy setting)
- no sci-fi or anime please
- comes in a modern presentation (this excludes e.g. UO which otherwise meets above criteria)
Im not very confident there is such game at the moment but then again i can hardly check out all the games out there myself . Any suggestions?
Cheers

darkfall will be the first to come out of the 3 (ive never heard of the 3rd 1) but anyway there is NO MMO LIKE THIS other than asheron's call which is VERY old and has EQ graphics so i suggest wait for darkfall its just your best bet and i guess if your really wanting something it play age of conan meets about half of those.
just with those expectations never play WAR you will be VERY disapionted
so heres what you do
1. AoC
if that isnt your flavor
2. asheron's call--- it meets all your requirements except reasonable grpahics
heres if your really deperate for entertainment
3.oblivion/merrowind/other singleplayer role playing game
finally SUPER deperate
4. guild wars
these are just until darkfall is released in 6 months
Yeah, i didnt really expect a positive answer, but thanks for the reply anyway. Btw, Renaissance has its own entry in the Game List of MMORPG.com (unlike Mortal Online for some reason beyond my recognition), it appears to be a game with a philosophy similar to Darkfall and Mortal Online, only in a very early stage of development.
Anyway, I am very pleased to see that there are several games being made right now that are no WoW-clones (like just about all MMOs on the market at this time) but whose game play is based upon the original version of UO. I only wish at least one of them would release soon...
@ Darkfall: I whish i could share your confidence about Darkfall releasing in 6 months, but lets just hope for it, what else can we do...
@ AoC: I really hate when people here recommend this horrid game to poor souls. I played it from early access untill about two weeks after release (thats only three weeks which is in my case a negative record). In my opinion this game is a complete failure and to me an utter disappointment. The only positive things i could come up with are the nice graphics (apart from the ugly Speed Trees of course) and collision check. The rest is either average, annoying or atrocious, examples for the latter are the excessive use of zoning and even worse instancing (the instancing you see in this game is so unforgivable that - in my opinion - it totally destroys the game).
@ SP games: There are better ones out there than "Morrowind" or "Oblivion" (the latter one is unplayable without a crap load of mods to make it at least halfway realistic). A very good recent game would be "The Witcher". But then again, that is not really what this place is about....
First off, with all of this hype on darkfall, it needs too stop. Yes in theory its great but that game is not going too come out.
If I remember correctly that game was in the making over 5 years ago and stopped for a long time. If they started again I wouldn't be surprised if they sold the idea to some smaller company, which would mean they have a small amount of developers which would mean an even longer wait.
Second, I don't know why everyone has been getting so amped up on Mortal online because there really isn't much information on it on the web.
All of these games seem to be completely PvP based, which in the end will really be boring or a waste of time because PvE is what holds a game together. I LOVE PvP but whats the point of an MMO without SOME PvE?
Without mass PvE, you mine as well go play Guild Wars, which every real MMO player knows, that GW is the laughing stock of MMORPGs. That game is a joke.
The games are sandbox, that means they have both PvE and PvP. There is no leveling and depending on the community players alone can generate enough reason for each other to log on. I guess you've never played a sandbox game, though if you have you must have had a really really bad experience.
The reason sandbox games tend to highlight their PvP features is, as I said before, that players tend to generate their own "content". This ranges from guilds going to war over one thing or another, RPers playing out their soap operas, jerk bag teammates helping you defeat an enemy and then killing you for any little piece of scrap that might have been on that boss. Also sandbox games tend to also place a great deal of importance on crafters for items, though their items can be used for PvP this is not a true PvP element. Then again you could also be referring to the lack of leveling, which I personally feel is just a crutch to stretch the longevity of a games content.
Honestly, I would actually say, as a fellow gamer, that you try a sandbox style game. Could be one of the ones that was mentioned by the OP, if and when some are released, or even Eve.
On another tangent, if someone says they are looking for a sandbox style game, AoC is probably one of the worst games you could produce as an option. It is perhaps the furthest from a sandbox game as a game could get, save for a few of the poorly implemented community elements (pertaining to guilds and PvP).
Well Darkfall has recently been proven true despite the best efforts of the vapor trolls, but Mortal Online is another issue. The game came out of nowhere, they have a very limited website, really immature dev team (judging from their posts) and an amazing looking cinematic trailer, with little information about the actual game. And its set for an early 09 release. I don't buy it at all. No way. Not with all those features, those graphics, that fast.
Darkfall Travelogues!
first of all its your own opinion that it wont come out, but they have shown videos of developement and also, i think most mmos has SOME pve, and GW is not a joke, but back to the thread, GW2 will take longer to lvl, i meant way longer, but it has structured pvp, which renders u with a top class char and most or all equipment, and or a sidekick system that lets u play with players at a much higher lvl, and it has reasonable graphics
edit: of course this is directed at Bdonedge
Haha that just proves you don't know what you're talking about. It was started in 2003. It was started originally in 2001 under a smaller company, Razorwax, then they moved to Greece and merged with Aventurine in 2003 to start over with a BIGGER staff and a lot more money.
Darkfall Travelogues!
im remaking my list for sandbox mmo players to play to wait for these games to come out
1.NOTHING there is no game that has a reasonable amount of players that is a sandbox MMO due to facts....
1.WAY TO OLD (UO, kind of ashernon's call)
2.dev team is STUPID
3. EVE is a sandbox game but is WAY to slow paced to get a large amount of players (has 2% of MMO cash flow going to it)
now games that are kind of similar to sandbox games
1.EVE
2.Vangaurd
3.WoW (not really it just is a good time waster)
4. Age of Conan PvP server
5.UO (too old to get in the top 3)
6.Asheron's call (too old)
7. second life
8. guildwars
9.wait for ANYTHING (TCoSB, darkfall, WAR, Earthrise, Fallen Earth, champions online, NOT AION, stargate worlds)

So you're saying 2001-2003 wasn't 5 or more years ago?
Simple math FTW!
What does it matter how long Darkfall has been under development? Even if it was 5 years or more, if i remember correctly WoW was under development for 6 or so years... It appears they are now close to starting the closed beta. If that means they can release the game in Q4 2008 is however yet a different question.
I also dont think Darkfall, Mortal Online etc. are primarily focused on PvP, there will be lots of PvE there as well. It is just that they aim at providing a (for a game) realistic world with maximum freedom for the players. So, FFA PvP is more a consequence of this philosophy than a motivation and it is up to the community what to make of it. I am curious how this will work out in the end...
