I will keep this simple and to the point. I payed and played a game for a couple years. I payed and played this game becuase I liked it at the time.  In all my 14 years of MMO gaming or any gaming for that matter, I have never seen a company take the core mechanics of a game and just totally redo them.  This made the game totally different and that is not what I payed to play.  I also felt that my investment of time was all flushed down the toliet due to not being able to play the horrid new style of game they introduced.
It would be no different then if I went out, bought a brand new porche, then about two years later they come take it away and leave me with a pinto in my driveway.  I would be confused and pissed off, so mad infact I would hate Porche and never buy another product from them in the future, as many have chose to do with SoE product's.
I was one of the lucky individuals that got a full reinburstment from SoE for the purchase of the game (multiple copies) I had 5 subs at the time. Also, I got back my 2 years of monthly payment's in full.
SoE didn't wake up over night and decide to make these huge changes.  They had this planned, they are a large corp who likes to make money.  Where they failed was to deliver proper communication  stating the direction of the game was going.  You cannot do this in the business world and get away with it.

As you stated your feelings are true hate, and I respect your point of view, I would like to know how you can still harbor hate towards the company? From what I read here, you won! Congratulations because I love it when David triumphs over Goliath. Does this triumph not offer you a certain inner feeling of content? I know if I could get reimbursed for dumping the money into a certain recent release that I feel totally misled the gamers.

And I also agree that SOE decisions were not made overnight, but I also agree with a previous post in that SOE did not make these decisions to chase away it's subscribers either. There was obviously discussion, projections, market study, due diligence composed by someone at SOE that came to the conclusion that making certain decsions would benefit the game... and that person who created the powerpoint presentation has probably been fired since.

What I'm saying, man,  is you are one of the lucky ones. Toast your victory. I just find it hard to still hate a company that you triumphed over but that might be my (mostly) positive outlook on life. My glass is always half full.

i like many of my friends got screwed over when $OE came out with the cu and then nge.

they took what was one of the greatest mmo games ever made and turned it into what we have now a dead game that no one likes and if anyone does like it they should throw out their pc right now as they are not a gamer.

i hate $OE as now others are doing the same things they do funCON ripped off an untold number of people with age of CONan and it is clear that CONan has bombed.

what i want is gaming to go back to the old days back when fanbois stayed in their hole and didn't come out and devs did what we told them to do.

what i and 250k of my friends want is the return of the pre-cu system of swg a full rollback to that system not a classic server but a full on rollback to when the game was fun.

and we are winning this war mmorpg has almost a million members and all of them back us swg vets and our war with $OE. all of those people want a pre-cu game and also want to see Smed put in jail for ripping all of us off.

I'm not sure if it's your cup of tea, but until you and your friends win the war you might want to check out some of the private pre-cu SWG servers out there... google it :)

Why not title this post, "What is the true definition of hate?".

Every time the OP gets backed in a corner he uses the literal term to prove a point. And you guys keep argueing with him. Its a circular argument. The OP has set it up that way. You can't win.

People throw around the word "hate" too much these days.

In the literal sense, no one here truely "hates" SOE.  If they say they do, they are wrong.

    You haven't a clue..that is quite aparent..

I hate ,if not all SOE.at the very least several people in it.I dispise, detest, loath and would do them harm if ever we were to meet, knowing that i would go to jail for it,So yes..I HATE them.

They took money from me with no intent on liviing up to the offer they made to get said money. And no, I didn't get a refund, because i bought my copy of an expantion in a real store instead of an on-line pre-order.they removed over 4000+ hours of time i had invested in my char's in SWG.Yes..I hate them..They said it was my fault for not likeing the changes..I hate them. They lied, cheated and otherwise took advantage of me and several thousands of  other people..I and a lot of them truely hate people at SOE.And hell no..I won't get over it.Ever.

What if one day your characters in EQ2 were simply removed from the game? I would hit cancel... but I still got my money's worth from the game during that time, and made friendships in-game that carried with me through other games. My original SWG guild all joined WoW together and we still play together in most games now.
What if your nearly 3 years of work and trust you put into the company had been ripped away? Game play is not work unless you are farming gold to sell for real money. If you consider playing games work then you need to unplug.
It is that simple. Your post has a tone of a holyer then though attitude. I am not a SOE hater. I just recently cancelled eq2 after 4 years and I was a dedicted SWG player who all 3 mains were made useless after almost 3 years of work yet I still played EQ2. I do not hate SOE but I do understand why people do. SOE affected a lot of people with SWG and you should support them not put them down. Again, I understand anger and dissatisfaction... it is the HATE that I don't agree with.
You ask what makes so many haters. I ask you what makes you have so little compassion for those who were truely hurt by SOE by nge. And again from my original post, how did the game TRULY hurt you? Physically? Emotionally? I understand the emotional aspect because SWG pretty much ruined my enjoyment of the star wars universe, but I still don't HATE the company. In the words of Donald Trump, "It's just business."
What makes your post so thoughtless and ignorant of what SOE did to many players. You simply do not get it. The hate for SOE by many is justified. I still stand firm in stating that hate is a word thrown around too casually. I accept distrust, disgruntled, disenfranchised, hurt, upset, angry, and a slew of other words used to describe emotions, but I still draw the line at hate.

Is there a generation gap? Should I blame the media for making this generation forget what hate really is? Rodney King, KKK, Genocide, Nazis, Rwanda... this is hate. I am trying to draw a line between absolute emotion (like hate) and general displeasure in it's varying forms...

A generation gap? Are you refering to me? You suggesting I do not understand the meaning of hate because I am a younger generation then you? I am probably a lot older then you. I am not saying that to put you down just stating a likely fact. I am sure I am in the older group of people who post here. If you are 50+ then i retract my I am older statement and welcome you to the ranks of mature gamers.

As far as how people were hurt by SOE (i would venture to guess 90% of the "haters" as you call them are SWG vets). If you do not understand that then you miss what mmos are for a lot of the players. The same way SOE missed it. They are more then a game for many. To you they are games so it is easy to dismiss them and the emotional impact they have on some players. No everyone is as strong minded as you seem to be.

Give me a break about using the term "work" you knew exactly what I meant by "work". Your insulting comment about needing to unplugg because I used the term "work" is a veiled insult and you know it.

As far as you going back over and over again to the word "hate" you are using that to defend a weak point. If someone disagrees you question their understanding of the world hate. In the gaming world game "haters" and using "hate" as a term does not mean "hate" in the way you want it to. It is a common way to discribe players who voice their anger about a game and a company. So in this context you seem to be the one who does not know what "hate" means.

You started a post that is mean spirited and was not asking for true information. You were actually subtly putting down people who feel hate, dislike, anger, etc, etc, etc for SOE. However you make it clear you are more level head because you still play games by SOE. I do not play them anymore because they are a buisness that to me failed at customer respect and game managment. So I felt it was time to stop giving them money. Even if I loved one of their games and I loved EQ2.

If you truely are connecting the emotions of "hating" a game company to say Rwanda, kkk, and nazi then your post is totally pointless. Why would any one connect those things to hating a game company. In all the "hate" posts about SOE I never made those connections.  If you were as I "thought" looking for reasons why so many do not like (hate) SOE or play their game then we explained it. Oh, but you dismissed it since we do not understand the word "hate".

Good for you! You are right to hate them! The OP will try to point out how crazy you are to hate them. I understand totally. I don't hate SOE since they are not worth putting that much emotion into but I clearly understand how you feel and you have a good reason to feel that way.

How is it then, that hate was an ill-used word in previous decades but is thrown around so casually now? There is some kind of gap occurring to allow the sins of the past for which a word like hate was more commonly used to be used in general every day speech.

Again, I understand emotion and I am a SWG Vet. I was hurt by their decisions too, but to say I would physically cause harm to those who made those decisions as the poster above states is clearly an unstable comment to make. It would take an awful big event in my life to make me want to harm someone else and knowingly accept a jail sentence for what, $360 (or so) worth of monthly subscription fees maximum? Do you not find violence an extreme? JAIL TIME FOR $360!??! That poster above is blowing smoke out his virtual ass and looks stupid for doing so, and you look as bad for agreeing with him.

You think the point of this is to let you know that I am more level-headed? The point was to determine if people truly hate or if they use it in (my opinion) an incorrect context. Good for you for making the only real decision you can and cancelling your subscription... I don't see you hatemongering in every SOE fanboy post so I have no issue with you... you are not a hate monger.

Either you need some serious psychological help, or are completely lying to try to prove a point.

Are you actually going to tell me that if you were standing in line at a coffee shop and met a nice guy who works for SOE you would attack him? Right there. You would drop everything and just beat him up because he works for SOE?

In 10 years of internet boards I have never seen such BS.

You see folks, this is a perfect example of "nerd rage". Sitting behind a keyboard, throwing out false threats to invisible people you dont even know.  And you say I don't have a clue? Sure, be pissed at SOE. But to attack an employee on sight? BS...you would not have the balls..to what? Go to jail for a stupid video game that they changed? Oh boy..

I seriously believe your IQ does not break 100.

You start this thread in reguards to SOE. I thought that was your main interest. However as the thread goes on you say it is really about the word hate and it's use. So I guess if that is really what you wanted to talk about then I wonder why even start a thread here at mmorpg? Why not take it to some english and it's use forums? Seems you are more intrested in semantics. However I am here to talk about MMOs. Good luck in your search for the devine truth to the word "Hate" in relationship to SOE.

Oh, by the way you did not touch any nerve at all. I was just pointing out to those that may have missed it your responses are filled with little jabs.

Obviously, SOE was the main inspiration for this post becuase I hear the word hate and SOE in almost every bashing tread. My original question was if it was truly hate players felt towards a company. I did not start this in an english grammer forum because english scholars would not throw a word like hate around so casually. Hate and MMO gaming is an all too common trend and I am sure there is some college student creating a thesis for their master's degree about this very issue.

Hate is commonly used to describe anything disliked these days.  It seems you are having trouble embracing this reality.

If you stick with the old usage of the word you are revealing your age and the rest of us who remember a time when the word hate was used in an entire different category.

People say "I am hungry" all the time when it fact they are not , but the meaning of the word has changed due to how society uses it in their everyday lives.

If you stick with the old usage of the word you are revealing your age and the rest of us who remember a time when the word hate was used in an entire different category.

People say "I am hungry" all the time when it fact they are not , but the meaning of the word has changed due to how society uses it in their everyday lives.

Good job!  The OP will, of course, ignore this fact, but good job nonetheless.  The idea that the OP seems to be proposing is that language, specifically the word hate's definition, should be entirely rigid and not change.  He'll be damned if a mere 1558 years of English language evolution is going to stop him in his quest for rigidity.  For an example, lets use the word "starving".  Today, people use it to describe intense hunger, but, a few hundred years ago, it actually was used to describe feeling very cold.  Similarly, look at the word "redneck".  It is currently used to describe, in an offensive way, someone considered uncultured, bigoted, etc.  Its original usage was to describe Covenaters in Scotland in 1600s because they wore red pieces of cloth around their neck in support of their cause.  Alternately, in America, the term stems from the West Virginia Coal Miners March who wore red bandanas around their neck to show their desire to unionize.

I sympathize with the OP's desire to preserve the memory of acts of hate and violence throughout all of history, but that doesn't mean that you have to enslave a word to those acts.  Just as you can use hate to describe many varying degrees of dislike, in this day and age, you can use other words to describe those acts besides hate.  I think that the idea that hate is the only appropriate word is misguided.

You are not worth the effort it took me to type this response...

Alot of people get attached to games in way similiar to how people are attached to old friends I guess. Some gamers get to the point where they are as close to the game as they would to a person they completely know. So I can understand that people hate developers like Sony Online Entertainment because the connection to their products are deeper than people like who are not as outraged at these companies. What I'm trying to say is SOE never liked it's customers as much as it's customers liked it's games. No developer has go to further than pleasing the community enough to bring in the money. Not that developers are all about the money but they just don't need to care about gamers as much all the vocal haters seem to think.

Game companies are very much like celebrities. We say "Oh, oh, Mr.SOE give us some more high level instance and maybe a new race or something please." just like a fan would go "Oh, oh, Mr.Lucas please make Star Wars Episode 7."

So when your life is ruined by the next "betrayal(internet sarcasm)" move Sony makes don't hate, don't even feel bad. Just hold your chin up high say "I've been cheating on you with Relic anyway" and leave (insert whatever game). But know that as soon you've dumped your next developer that Sony and Mr.Smedley are ready to take you back into their arms.
