Yes. A Bioware MMO will be delicious. KotOR makes it better.

  • EverithEverith Member CommonPosts: 482

I am 100% read up on all the lore of KOTOR and the rest of the SW universe ive read 90% of the books and whatnot and am well versed

The main thing that bothers me about this decision is that jedi will NOT be jedi.

The first quest where your jedi has to kill X bandits for X amount of items or w/e well you're not a Jedi anymore. For a jedi combat is supposed to be a last resort not an all the time resort that is just the easy way to play. That was the best part of the KOTOR games was the different ways you could solve the situations and the LIGHT/DARK meter. If kotor will be an mmo EVERYONE will be darkside in the eyes of the lore and it'll just be hey my sith is cooller than your sith...

I'm kinda excited but i can't see kotor translating into a good MMO universe... there can't be plot twists story hooks deep character develpment or anything like that in which i loved. Everyones gonna make a dark sith assasin or something and it'll be awfull... i'd much rather have seen a kotor3.

Unless bioware comes up with something revolutionary in terms of gameplay and options for your character not to mention instancing (i don't wanna run around town watching sith jump all over the place) i cannot imagine it being very immersive at all.

    No

I hear thousands of Star Wars and pre CU/NGE fans going :... "oh noes... wow in space with lightsabers"...

this is gonna be about classes, levels, raids, arenas / battlegrounds / instances and linear.. BLAH

    And uhmm......you know this how?

This sort of comment is exactly what I'm talking about when I say it's silly to condemn OR condone a game before it's released.  Hell....THIS game is barely a single cell organism yet, and some people are already planning out it's demise.  Ridiculous and immature, I say.  Good grief, I hope none of you ever serve on a jury in this country, if you're in the U.S.  O.o  Bioware is innocent until proven guilty (of high crimes and treason against the gaming public).  You can't charge and convict without evidence, and Sir (or Madam), you have none yet.

People just like to complain and whine. I think they get some kind of weird enjoyment out of it.

This is a crock and you know it. The only reason playable jedi was so wrong for SWG was because of the timeline. A KOTOR mmo doesn't have those restrictions, so no problem there. I honestly think Bioware will do an amazing job on balancing force users with other proffessions.

Since this news broke i have been reading alot of others opinions. Some seem to think that this mmo will be very linear and play out like the single player kotor games, in which i think is not correct.

I think that over the last 3 yrs. LA/Bioware have done their homework and have taken notice of how bitter the pre-cu players have fought and i think won against what SOE did to SWG. I can't see them making a new SW mmo in that same mold.

In my own opinion i think the mmo will have the most story driven content ever seen in any mmo to date. I also think planets and worlds will not be confined and instanced, ala AOC.

Will it have player driven economy and player housing, only time will tell. I tend to think that the game will have a large array of differnt proffession's and will allow a player to move in and out of each one with a skill system setup.

LA's can't be so inept to overlook over 250k former SWG players and make another SWG NGE. That would be mmo suicide and i think they know that. They also know that the game will have to have the best elements of what people loved about SWG.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                The biggest seller for me is that, even though the origional trilogy was what i was raised on, the kotor yr's has a much more open and less of canon feel to it.

Content will be much better, because it can be created wothout having to stay within a certain time period. It's basicly an open book. New races, weapons, ships and planet's can all be created and open up a whole new SW world.

This is the best news I've heard all day. I love the KOTOR setting. I just hope that space fights and travel are included at launch. That was my biggest gripe with SWG when it came out, well that and the time period it was set in. They limited the game so much by setting it between the first two movies.

Finally I have a MMO that I can actually keep an eye out for.

Earlier, someone mentioned the three main forces that existed in the first KOTOR game--Jedi, Sith, and Mandalorians. If Bioware wants to follow a proven formula then this game should be factioned. Obviously, Jedi versus Sith in which players can create characters in either faction. Remember, the Sith during this period were building an empire and threatening to take control of the galaxy while the Jedi were the protectors of the Old Republic. This would work just fine. The question is: where will other classes come from? Mandalorians as a third playable faction? How about scoundrels and organized crime syndicates as a fourth playable faction?

I personally would hate to this end up as a overly-linear PvE focused game. It needs factions and it needs controlled PvP opportunities to be wildly successful like WoW. That is the formula for success!

The other question is: will there be a space component? This is what makes an MMO set in the SW universe really challenging. What is SW without a multi-passenger ship to hang out in with your buddies while you craft items, train light-saber combat, mine for space ore, and discuss the nature of the force with your buddy who thinks the force is a ridiculous old superstitious bunch of mumbo jumbo. All this right before you get attacked by space pirates and everyone runs to their turret blasters and...............you get the point.

This is a BIG undertaking!!!! How many planets? Will there be ships available? How many playable races (and they damn well better have unique body types and movement animations. None of this cookie-cutter V:SoH bull-dookie) what will the combat system be like? Turn-base? Twitchy? I hope it plays more like WoW or AoC than the KOTOR games did myself!!

You guys think they can live up to all this? I have my doubts! SW is sacred! They better understand that expectations for a SW MMO are much much higher than any other MMO project!

Well it's about bloody time someone came and said something! This has to be the worse kept secret EVER! LOL!! Anyway, this is really good news for us SWG refugee's. I suppose the diehard SWG players aren't too happy with this news since it will mean they will no longer be the only Star Wars MMO in town and the membership hemorrhaging will only get worse than what it already is. If KOTOR online is even a halfway decent game it will mean the end of SWG for sure. As much as I hate to see it happen with all the good memories I had with the classic game, I think it's doom is at hand.

As for playing a Jedi or Sith, I think it should NOT be a starting character profession but one that you have to unlock and do serious training for like they did in classic SWG. If they do skill based rather than level based progression that would be great but I don't really see a sandbox type of game coming out of Bioware. Sandbox games don't do well with casual gamers and that is the big target demographics these day for MMO companies. Hopefully I'm wrong but we'll see once we get more details about the game.

All that is needed now is to wait 10 more days to find out if Cryptic is doing a Star Trek MMO and between that, KOTOR MMO and Stargate Worlds, this is turning out to be a good year for sci-fi IP's!

i doubt SWG vets would play it unless it was a sandbox, which i highly doubt will be.

Speak for yourself. I'm a vet and I welcome this new SW MMO.  an MMO doesn't have to be like swg pre-cu to be great. In fact SWG Pre-cu was anything but great. It had very few things going for it.

This is excellent news for the MMO market. There's finally a AAA SciFi MMO on the horizon.

I'll definately be waiting and watching this. What other people have said is true Jedi are a touchy thing and could really make or break this game. But it also depends on how the game is aimed and structured. I would like to believe that there is not going to be an mmo made going forward that doesn't incorporate a good amount of resources in pvp aspects of a game. Pvp is too popular not to be included.

One question I would like to know is whether there are any reports of this game FOR SURE being developed as cross platform. I mean if that's the total aim I think many basic questions are answered. Such as fast paced, twitch type combat (anything less would bore console players), pvp will be a for sure ( almost all popular console games can be played online against others).   Then try and fit in the whole Jedi thing in pvp...ugh don't want to even think of the balance issues when you have an Alpha class and regular classes in a game with pvp.

But Bioware has won me over time and time again. I have no reason to start doubting them now. This is good news imo

I really like KOTRO as a RPG and i like MMOs, but i am still not sure how good these 2 mix. In a singleplayer RPG you have an epic storyline and bioware is good at making rpgs with these epic storylines, the problem when it comes to an mmo is that storylines get less important in them usually.

Also i got burned by a few overhyped mmos in the last years so i just don't want to get excited too early about any new mmo, if the game turns out good its definitely a game that i would play longer times. (but thats still unsure)

this has been a rumor for how long now.... its going to happen! I loved KoToR.. this is going to get major major hype this will probably take years and years to make.. they wont want to fuck this game up. .. I m so stoked as a former dark jedi from bloodfin, i missed my saber. I missed the epic Jedi PvP hopefully this will re package and re deliver all what SWG had the potential to be plus some.. i can not WAIT for this game!

I doubt it will be anything like original SWG. I doubt the game will be for those that liked original SWG.

They are probably going to make polished (compared to nge at start everything is polished) version of star warsy wow with casual features and casual or no crafting at all.

Probably nothing to really look forward to for us real sandbox lovers. But not bad for thousands of kotor fans and casual mmorpg players that got fed up with wow and lotro.

  • TrandTrand Member UncommonPosts: 234

Well I guess all of 2010 or 2011 is a write off :)

DOAC is still the MMO I judge other games by, My first and still my favorite.

yes i'm quite sure that bioware won#t do a sandbox game. their speciality on rpgs was stories and quests so i guess thats what will be mainfocus on their mmo too.

Also its very likely to be class/level based and not skill based so in my opinnion its good news for those starwars fans that like a standard mmo with story/quest focus, but those that want a real sandbox/open world mmo probably won't be too happy with that game

If any company have a chance to compete with Blizzard, it's BioWare, so I hope KotOR Online will be great.

But guess who will be the main target for raiding in KotOR Online? Spirit of some long time dead Sith lord? Or Mandalore himself? I imagine an epic picture: like 40 different jedies fighting a lone mandalorian warrior, hehe. Would be a truely jedi-like.

I want to read something like this:

"Welcome to The Old Republic Online, where the Force flows from Masters to Apprentices, through uncountable forms of life. Be part of this universe with your very own customed Jedi, Sith, Bounty-Hunter, whatever Force Sensitive life-form you want...!"

Guess I need some rest... :P

    Cheers!!!

Is it? Does it? I much prefer to see effort being put into something new actually rather than simply ripping off an old film that has already been ripped off god knows how many times. How many more Star Wars games are they gonna churn out? Oh I like Star Wars dont get me wrong but lets face it.......in a 100 years from now games companies will STILL be churning them out, knowing full well that the games will sell cos its "Woot! Star Wars! Yay I LOVE Star Wars! Itz zo coool!".

Its a good thing some people out there can come up with new ideas though.
