WOW hasn't destroid the genre, all the other developers trying to copy it are. WOW though is a very good mmorpg and well polished and put everyother company to shame and showed them how it should be done and creating the most polished mmorpg out there.
I don't see how WOW dumbed anything down though because it just got rid of all the annoying crap from the previous mmorpgs and made it all soooo much better. WOW is the perfect fantasy class based mmorpg out there to lead that genre but other developers have to not copy WOW because people are fedup of all the clones.
---------------------------------------- Talking about SWG much?
Since there is a best 5 mmorpgs in other post, may as well pick the worst 5 mmorpgs from your past experience. Mines are 1) Age of Conan (played for 5 days) 2) Star Wars Galaxy 3) Asheron's Call 2 4) Shadowbane 5) Hellgate: London
What's yours?
EDIT: We should only post non-free ones, the games must either has a retail box or a sub plan. This will keep the list focus. (Yes, there are a LOT of bad free money/xp grind mmo with cash shops out there)
You mean biggest fails, becouse when a mmorpg fails that will not always mean it was a bad game.
I know many players who played AC2 and will say the game was awesome, it failed becouse of MS released it to soon and with almost no advertisement in europe.
And it was from beginning becouse of lack of conent(to early released) players starting to bash ac2 and demonise it so much it never had a chance to proof it was a great game.
Same go for SWG when released it was not a bad game.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
Have not more becouse most others ive played for short time so dont know if they are good after long time playing.
Games i dont like:
1.WoW
2.EQ2
3.AoC
4.H.G.London(i dont see it as mmorpg but was terible game.
5.Shadowbane(im big fan of open pvp but this game just sucks)
Games i played shorttime but still impressed:
Saga of Ryzom.
Games i played shorttime but dont like:
1.Lotr
2.Fury
3.Perfectworld
4.LastChaos
5.Tabula Rasa
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009..... In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.

You're just supposed to post the worst 5 mmos from your experience. Not the worst 5 by subscription numbers or horrible launches. That's what he meant when he said to list your worst 5 mmorpgs. Anyways, on to my list.
1) NGE SWG - they took a virtual world and made it into a virtual game, a clunky, buggy game.
2) Dark & Light - a disasterously unfinished game built on stolen technology.
3) LOTR - I know that many people love this game because they love the IP but, as a game, it is very limited.
4) EVE - I dislike the idea that all you have to do is subscribe and you earn Xp. It is a sandbox, yes, but a very limited one.
5) Age of Conan - a fabulous IP opportunity just wasted away because the Devs didn't get enough investment capital to build the 'big game' this franchise really needed and deserved.
1.) planetside: as soon as the introdouced that stupid core combat it went to terds
2.) LOTR: i trialed it for 5 days and cried at its inflexability and stale combat
3>) sta wars: delivering space combat a year after launch didn't hide the obvious lack of dev and interest in soe's part, it was all a test bed for their greed
4.) tabula rasa: do i have to explain
5.) matrix....i'd gather keanu revves tastes better than this mmo
Im not going to post my top 5 worst MMORPGs but instead post the top two most ruined games by poor development direction:
1. Planetside upon the introduction of BFRs and the Core combat
Never in my life have I witnessed a more sure way to completely annahilate a game that should have been one to pave the way for MMOfps games
2: SWG after it was WOW-enized. I was shocked and appaled by the direction taken by the developers of this game. To this day I still don't understand how anyone could make the choice of completely abandon a games core mechanics to try and mimic another game.
Comments
1) AOC.....The game was a BIG lie
2) Shadowbane...click to move/bad graphic's
3) Dark and Light.....same as AOC
4) AC2....forget why but I remeber I hated it
5) Hellgate.... Why was this a mmorpg??????
1. Age of Conan
2. Vanguard
3. Dark and light
4. D&D online
5. Wow
I'm sure there are some REAL bad mmorpgs out there so i'll just do the ones I've played and not including fre mmorpgs;
(not in any order)
- Vanguard
- Everquest
- Dark and Light
- Dark age of Camelot
- Pirates of the burning sea
It's funny cause I could easily come up with a top 50 bad mmorpgs but I don't even have 1 mmorpg I think is good anymore.

From the games I have played, those anoyed me the most
- World of Warcraft (even though most of my friends were there, I couldn't stand the immature community)
- Tabula Rasa (in beta, just boring eventhough I wanted to like it, like my friends did )
- Everquest 2 (lag city, don't get it why the lag was worse than Vanguard at launch? what did I do wrong?? and I dislike instances)
- D&D Online (couldn't emerge myself, instances everywhere)
- Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (at launch, pretty good now, though I still love/hate crafting )
Games I liked (since we can't only spread hate, can we?)
- Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (mmm, probably why it is a love/hate relationship )
- Saga of Ryzom (only played the trial, liked the skill system and graphics)
- Pirates of the Burning Sea (Pirates MMO! but never took the time to get emerged into the game)
- EVE Online (didn't play much, same issue as PotBS)
Games that are "bad" for various techincal reasons
1) Dark and Light
2) Star Wars Galaxies
3) Vanguard
4) Horizons
5) EQ2
**I didn't play Conan long enough to see many of the technical issues others see. I also missed out on a few high profile failures, lucky me! **
Games that were "bad" due to lack of entertaining gameplay (not including games that just were not my style)
1) City of Heroes (never played CoV)
2) EQ2
3) Conan
4) The Matrix Online
5) Tabula Rasa
Games i like:
1.AC
2.AC2
3.lineage2
Have not more becouse most others ive played for short time so dont know if they are good after long time playing.
Games i dont like:

1. Runescape
2. Tibia
3. Puzzle Pirates
4. Minions of Mirth
5. Wurm Online
1) Tabula Rasa.
2) Age of Conan.
3) Vanguard.
4) Lord of the Rings Online.
5) Everquest 2.
WoW - everything about the game sucks, from the graphics to the fanbois, to screwing over MMO genre for years to come.
Tabula Rasa - not a rpg not a fps but all suck
SWG post Nge - screw you SoE and LA.
AOC - Pretty much WoW with blood and boobs.
1) SWG
2) DnL
3) FFXI
4) Lineage
5) Lord of the Rings.
1 - Age of Conan. I never thought anything would surpass Vanguard.
2 - Vanguard. Lots of "potential" for a sandbox mmo but far too poorly executed
3 - Dungens & Dragons Online - The worse non-MMO they could have made out of what could have been a great franchise
4 - Guild Wars - again its on this list because they insist on calling it an MMO and its not. You cant even jump!
5 - Matrix. Enough said.
1) WoW - appearently, 10 million people can be wrong.
2) EVE - $15 a month RTS that vets and 60+ hour/week players will always have an advantage. So, I pay to get shit on? no thanks.
3) SWG (NGE) - not alot to say. They borked it. They borked it harder, and they basically told their player base "we don't care what you like".
4) Linage I & II - How is this game popular in Korea and China?
5) WoW - yep, it's that bad.
1) NGE SWG - they took a virtual world and made it into a virtual game, a clunky, buggy game.
2) Dark & Light - a disasterously unfinished game built on stolen technology.
3) LOTR - I know that many people love this game because they love the IP but, as a game, it is very limited.

4.) tabula rasa: do i have to explain
5.) matrix....i'd gather keanu revves tastes better than this mmo
so say we all
1... RF Online
2... Tabula Rasa
3... SWG-NGE
4... Age of Conan
5... DDO
1. AOC
2. WOW
3. FFXI
4. Hellgate
5. POTBS
1: World of Warcraft
2: Age of Conan
3: Eve Online
4: City of Heroes/City of Villains
5: Guild Wars or Dark Age of Camelot
Best:
1: Darkfall Online
2: Star Wars Galaxy
3: Runescape
4: Dark and Light
5: Counter-Strike 1.6 and under.
5 worst, huh? Here goes.
1. Runescape
2. PlaneShift
3. World of Warcraft
4. EVE online
5. 4Story
When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!
Im not going to post my top 5 worst MMORPGs but instead post the top two most ruined games by poor development direction:

My worst 5. I will rank them by my disappointment (ie, I was hyped for them), as all free MMOs are 1000X worse than any of these.
1) AC2 - The very first MMORPG to be super hyped, and a total crash and burn.
2) DDO - C'mon. I mean, seriously.
3) EQ2 - Doesn't deserve them name Everquest. The second MMO sequel to tank, imo.
4) PotBS - Always wanted to be a pirate. Lame game. Luckily I waited to see the reviews, so I never bought it.
5) AoC/Vanguard - Two promising titles that totally tanked it.
1. Dark and Light
2. AC2
3. AoC
4. DDO
5. EQ2
