Expect KOTOR MMO sometime in 2009?

Howler54Howler54 Member UncommonPosts: 133

I'm confuzzled.

I browsed around on the internet looking for any info on the upcoming KOTOR Mmo, one site I found was this

http://www.primotechnology.com/2007/10/19/biowares-upcoming-mmo-based-in-kotor-universe/

I know they state that it's rumours but isn't it weird that we should expect the game so soon ? I mean, have they (Bioware) worked on this for a long time ? And if so, why havn't anyone heard of it :O ?

Because if they are just starting to develop this game, I hardly think we can expect so early as 2009, more like 2010-2011.

Anyone who wants to shed some light ?

Ps. Sorry if anyone have brought this up already, in a hurry, so I don't have time to search for it atm.

A reporter asked John Riccitiello from EA during E3 what games were being developed.

"We’ve got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development."

The first one is WAR of course.

    Then he said:

“And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about — in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it.”

Ok so the reporter asked if it was KOTOR online and he said yes.

Anyway, afaik that's all anyone except Bioware knows and the EA reporter maybe said something that he shouldn't have.

The game will come out in 2009 unless it gets pushed back abit like most MMO's do for fine tuning and polishing. But they have been working on this game for some time now they just have done a very good job of keepping a lid on it is all.  :)

I think it's just a comment on the sad state of MMORPGs.

The games that set the standard, UO, EQ, AC have aged to the point we don't want to play them. Very few of the new releases are worth playing, and some have been just terrible, like Auto Assault, Matrix, etc.

That leaves you with playing the current behemoth, WoW, and if you're just not into WoW, you're kind of out of luck.

LoTRo is ok, if you like quest grinding, and Vanguard is supposedly getting better. The latest release that was supposed to be awesome, AoC, turned out like I thought  it would, just a button mashing graphically pretty mess.

That leaves people just salivating for something decent to release, and the current craze is KOTOR, mostly because we don't know anything about it, so everyone imagines it's going to be the game they want to play. And most likely it will release, and turn out not to be the game most people want to play (it can't be everything to everyone) and then we'll speculate on the next title to release.

I hope WAR will have a good release, but certainly that's not going to appeal to everyone, because it's RvR and not everyone is looking for an RvR game. Also, we don't even know if the RvR gameplay is going to be really good yet.

There is no reason to believe this game will be launching in 2009, i am guessing earlier to second quarter 2010. Bioware doesnt announce games unless they are close to finshed,

It is depressing Bioware has yet to officially announce KOTR with trailers and such. I'm on my way to preorder games tonight/tomorrow and sadly none of them will be MMOs. Maybe I will preorder WAR. I know it will be good. But I'm not really into that type of game, sadly

Actually I read somewhere that that's actually accurate. They haven't even announced it officially yet, at least Bioware hasn't.

    2011, I say. Maybe 2012.

I agree there is definately no logical reason to believe a 2009 release.  I'd guess sometime in 2011 though.  There is just no way they can get it up before 2010 and if they did you could bet your butt it would blow big time.

  • KorususKorusus Member UncommonPosts: 831

2009 is way too soon.  They may announce more substantive imformation about the game in 2009 though.  But even that isn't guaranteed.

You guys make me laugh with this 2011 and 12 stuff. Bioware opened it's Austin office in the beggining of 2006, for the sole purpose of creating their mmo. Do you really think that it will take them 5 or even 6 yrs. to complete it. This isn't Aventurine and Darfall.

I'm not a tech guy by any means, maybe someone else can explain this better, but i do know they are using the hero's engine. They said it cuts the development time in half if i'm not mistaken.

We still have 5 months and almost all of next yr., so a late 2009 release is very possible. I wouldn't expect any type of announcement until the new movie hits the theaters or sometime right after the new yr.

  • TeiraaTeiraa Member UncommonPosts: 447

It won't come out in 2009 for sure. We have two official statements by EA, one putting it towards the end of the period 2007-2011, and one putting it in the fiscal 2010/2011,

Not that BioWare couldn't develop, secretly test, and release a blockbuster MMO in 3 years development time (the end of 2009 would be exactly 3 years from the announcement), but I think it's extremely unlikely.

World of Warcraft took 5 years to develop.  Just sayin'.

Also, take into considerion that EA and BioWare are going to want all the hype focused on Dragon Age Origins for a while.  I wouldn't expect any new substantive information about the MMO until DA:O ships sometime in early 2009.  For the same reason they didn't want Dragon Age stepping on Mass Effect's toes.

They could have been working on it as early as 2005. The Austin studio opened in feb 06. They could do a late 09 early 10 release.

imo 2011 would be sad. 5 years is too long for a studio like them.

True, but back then not alot of people had been involved in making these types of games. People were exploring new ground. Now there are plenty of people with much experience making them. Not as much guesswork any more. It's conceivable that Bioware has in house many genre vets who know what they are doing, and provided they aren't creating all there systems from scratch, that could very well knock off 2 years production time.

I'm in no hurry for them to launch it, though. I'd like to see Star Wars: The Old Republic when it is as close to their (Bioware) idea of what they want at launch. Not what EA wants, not what these thousands of screaming and kicking fans want. On Bioware's timeline and not EA or those aforementioned fans. Based on what I have seen from Bioware in the past, they don't listen to that kicking and screaming from fans, so if that continues to hold true, I just have to hope EA stays out of their ears.

hopefully darkfall will actually come out...apparently they are securing servers, tech support, etc for beta

to the people that say that the KotOR online would be too soon if it was released in 2009, the mmo was announced on march 13 2006 (at least announcement that they began working on it) that will mean over 3 years of work (im assuming a late 2009 release) beta will prolly start mid 2009

edit: btw, just a thought, maybe the KotOR mmo just started to be worked on with the EA aquisition of bioware, perhaps the bioware mmo is completely different. im just saying this because on the wikipedia article about bioware's austin studio it mentions the bioware mmo and the kotor mmo seperately...seems unlikely but you never know.

Seriously were you people just born yesterday ? Is this the first time you are anticipating a game ? MMOs do not come out in 3 years time these days.  They are huge money projects that require a ton of work and people to finish.  You are just setting yourselves up for a massive dissapointment , no pun intended :)

I agree with this entirely, I think these guys talking about 09, 10, 11 havn't paid any attention to bioware projects. Bioware will officialy announce the game in 09 maybe, but then they will continue to work on it for another 3 - 4 years. At some point they will set up a discussion forums and bioware devolpers and writers like such as stanley woo and david gaiders or who ever is working on that project will make vague statements that could be taking to mean just about anything. All the while they will tease us when ever anyone ask's release date possibilities by answering "When it's done" . Those of you who doubt this need to go on over to the Bioware forums and check out Dragon Age, or just about any bioware project.

I pray that I am wrong since this is the MMO that I am dying to play, but knowing something of bioware I think we can safely say that its not coming out any time soon. Which reminds me, if a bioware employee says "soon" rest assured that you will get that info 2 years later.

Okay, thanks for all the answers. So it seems they have been working on it for a while :O

They are really good with secrecy, can't wait for some screenshots/video samples !
