I can tell you havent really played Shadowbane. And besides that no self respecting pvp'r would call himself "hardcore".  Ive known some of the best pvp'rs to grace the MMO genre, and not a one of em said "Im a hardcore pvp'r"

The "hardcore" pvpers are the ones that buy in game money, exploit bugs, and use third party programs in my experience. Theyre definately not a crowd a respectable pvp'r wants tso be a part of.

Becouse i critisise your baby, so you try another approach ok np:)

Your entile whatever you think you know of me, i dont realy care, hardcore is just a way of show differents between a casual pvp game and games like shadowbane or darkfall when its released.

Even when 6billion people say somthing is good, and ill think its not, i say it, it dont mean when 6 billion people say its good then thats the only defenition, they still can be wrong, majority are not always right.

So if all pvp players dont say there hardcore thats fine by me:)

Im still a hardcore pvper that dont mean i exploit cheat or use thirdparty bot programs hacks whatever it has nothing to do with hardcore pvper.

Your defenition of what a hardcore pvper is is totally wrong.

Have fun in your beloved shadowbane:)

If this is legit and not someone trolling, it certainly would be a very interesting game to be a part of. It does come off as too good to be true.. (what kind of life events gets one over 500 mil to toss at a game like that?). But I will certainly add it to my to-watch-out-for list

My constructive suggestion: As few shards as possible, to have tons of players in the world, it makes it seem so much more worldly and alive, such as in EvE

So this game is going to cost millions, probably tens of millions of dollars to make.  It has everything we want (including housing and free flight I hope) AND is free to play.  I understand making a game for the games sake but come on, do you plan on making money at all, or even recouping the money you spend, or how about even recouping the cost of hosting the game?  There is no mention of a item shop, or any other way or recouping even minor costs.

    Something smells fishy with that.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

It all sounds a little too good to be true. AoC graphics without the PC requirments? Free2play sandbox? Big money backing?

I'd love it if it were true and actually came to fruition, but only time will tell.

I know there's a huge niche desire for people to get back into the whole sandbox MMO; personally I miss the original UO like mad (if it didn't get butt fucked by EA I'd probably still play it -- however, updated graphics would have been nice). I played AC and enjoyed it too, but never got into it as much as UO. However, in the end sandbox is sandbox and the core of that form of MMO is similar throughout all sandbox MMO's (if there were any good ones left).

All in all, if it's all true then I'd definitely be extremely hyped, but as of now I'm still extremely skeptical.

So is this just a clever educated way of saying " look anyone with a little tech no how and intelligence can produce Darkfall" ? if so then well done but if not and this is all true then i will be giving up work to play this game lol!

But ye i do believe its just yet another elaborate hoax to show how easy it is to fool public forums :).

I have always been a fan of mixed class and skill-based progression where particular skills are restricted to particular classes and noone within a class can get all the available skills for that class. People who make decisions about their build get a better immersion and unique perspective of the game. Furthermore, by restricting the zergness of individual players the community will be enlarged with grouping encouragement. I prefer games where soloing is possible, but character uniqueness and traits are also in high demand. Essentially, there are many ways to succeed in overcoming the challenges which await the group. All that is required is that the person playing their unique build, and the utilities which go along with it, knows how to perform in the given situation.

Here are a few things that come to mind.

Every item should have it's own 3D model.

Not an artistic representation in 2D, but a full 3D mesh. The reason for this is linked to player housing and players of SWG are familiar with it.

    Player Housing

The landscape should allow great freedom in the location of player housing. Find a nice area, put a house down. I would accept that there should be some limitations to this - the relative freedom of SWG housing placement came at the cost of the landscapes looking like randomly generated terrain. There must be a middle ground between allowing for carefully sculpted landscapes, rich in detail (i.e. LOTRO) and the freedom to settle where you wish.

Decorating your house should allow you full freedom to place any object at any height and any angle in your home. This allows for a great deal of creativity in how you decorate, and players of SWG will have seen just how imaginative people can be when they can place anything they have inside their house. If a player puts together an interesting object with clever use of items, let them create a recipe from it that they can sell to other players. These players would gather the required 'ingredients' together (chair, skull, candle, whatever) and be able to place an identical object in their own home.

Allow people to start small and expand their homes by building extensions, another floor, basements etc. Let them place objects in their gardens around their home - trees, tables, ponds.

Player cities are also important, and help to form communities, which are particularly important in a sandbox style of game. Cities should have placeable taverns and other facilities, outer walls, and pathways/roads.

    Player Created Content

Give the players the tools to create their own quests. Perhaps allow for a simple scripting language that allows people to place NPCs or objects in the world, with instructions on how they react. Allow the players to write their own books and sell or give them away to their fellow players. Give players the tools to run events and parties, allow them to spawn NPCs, stages, crashed carts, and all manner of items for RP. Push this further than any game has done before.

    Mini-games

Sandbox style games focus on player interaction far more than level-based, follow-the-quest games. People need variety and mini-games have long been ignored in MMORPGs. Introduce card and board games in taverns that players can challenge each other with. Make mundane activities more interesting by adding an interactive element to them - basically, avoid anything that requires you to watch a progress bar move across the screen. Crafting is a prime culprit in many current games - crafting should be in-depth and also interactive. EQ2 went some of the way towards adding interactivity in crafting, but there must be further that this can be pushed.

    Character Customisation

Get it right, and know what not to do. There is absolutely no point in having a slider that increases your characters arm length by 6 inches. There is no point in having a slider that has 500 degrees of fatness (5 would probably be more than enough). There is no point in having 20 shades of brown that are all almost identical. The focal area of customisation is the face. Have many, many variations, with a lot of hairstyles. With clothing, allow appearance tabs such as EQ2 and LOTRO, so players can choose how they look, but still benefit from the clothing stats. Allow hiding of everything - helm, cape, boots, shoulders etc. Avoid having races that are just an human body with an animal head dumped on top. These are extremely dull and unimaginative.

    Chat

Take a leaf from SWG's chat system. Setting moods should be reflected in your chat window. If I am /mood_angy and I say "Give that to me", others should see something like 'Bloodnok says, "Give that to me" with anger in his voice'. SWG had this perfect. Make sure there are chat bubbles AND emote bubbles. Of course, allow these to be turned off for people who don't like them. Have a lot of pre-set emotes. Even if you can't produce animation for them all, have text emotes for almost everything you can think of.

    Skills

Have different skill sets that don't impact on each other. Allow a set of combat skills, then a set of crafting skills, and finally a set of social skills (such as dancing, actobatics or musicianship). Have different pools of points for each of these branches (which can be mixed and matched as we please within each of these fields) - but allow specialisation in only one field, once the initial skills have been mastered. This allows us variety in our activities (very important) and is not restrictive, but will force us to choose one area to excel in eventually.

NOOO it's Thursday, I want to find out more! .

In response to them making money ... there is one particular way you could do it. In game advertisements is a f2p way to go, and doesn't seem too obtrusive inside the game world. I guess we shall find out soon, I hope!

I'm not sure I'd want to see a party of orcs heading towards me with 'Drink Coca Cola' banners waving in the wind. Would probably ruin my immersion somewhat.

Very true. Although, what if the sign said 'Coca Cola shall set your free!'?

Mainly what I was talking about are just advertisements in cities and such like that. Out of the way, but you still see them, even if you don't pay attention. Maybe inside an inn you see a sign that says, 'Furnished by Bob's Furniture', or something like that. It may take away from the immersion a bit, but definitely not when you are out in the wilderness seeing those orcs for example.

Meh, not really sure if this could work, but I think if you could advertise without taking away from the world, then it is doable.

The ideas sounded really cool but yeah its a hoax post. I've been here at this site for a few yrs now and I've seen several of posts do this. No screenshots and jaw dropping features. They swear they come back and show pictures and vids.

One guy went so far he said they had millions and it was gonna be like UO with huge cities, etc

Another guy said the GMs would be online 24/7 and they'd generate content for us and cities would be player run and in "just a few days he will come back and post links to his website" (you guys remember he even named it "Dark Hearts" something like that)

And now this one he says they got 500 mil budget and when people say they want something like AC1 what do you know- they working on that

must be posts by someone who hates sandbox games my only guess. that why I didnt bother posting

Anyway I could be wrong. I wish I were wrong but so far this has been the trend.

You're probably right, but if it stirs up some interesting discussion on the sandbox concept then it at least serves some useful purpose.

You wrote some nice ideas why not post that as a concept at Developer's Corner? You could get a lot of good feedback there. The replies can get long and traffic is lower then general but its a great place to post ideas. Sometimes you get an anti-sandbox poster but I think your ideas would get love

Off hand, I like sliders. City of Heroes had them and it rocked. Yep, you saw some big, fat guys it was cool. I made great use of the sliders. I say we dont need sliders for a Face since they get covered up by helms

But it cant hurt to have deep facial options. I enjoyed that in EQ2

Read the whole thread.  Too good to be true.  Wouldn't believe it until I was logged into such a game itself.

  • SignusMSignusM Member Posts: 2,225

Either this or Darkfall, whichever comes first, maybe both. Sandbox old school MMOs are the only thing that's going to grab my interest anymore. I started in 2001 with Dark Age of Camelot, and while it wasn't a sandbox, it was certainly not too linear and had a difficulty to it on par with EverQuest. And due to DAoC being my first one, I do love some good PvP.

So things are looking good come this winter. Its either the DAoC Origins server, Darkfall, or this mysterious product that I'm praying isn't just some troll having fun. Has the MMO stagnation finally ended?
