Goldknygt I agree with you 100% and I didn't go into why something works or doesn't work, basically because that is a completely different thread. My point was day in and day out on these and many other forums people say that game x will take down WoW. I'm not saying that it never could..but giving the track record of new mmo's well its closer to never than possible. And I didn't think this would have to be neccessary to point out because again I was looking for intelligence but I am not a FANBOI I don't play wow haven't for several months..I play Vanguard, AoC and a AAA Beta that I am currently a part of. I don't even think WoW is the best game to PLAY on the market but that is yet another disscussion. But I do approch things logicaly and you can once again spin the numbers anyway you want and It all comes out the same WoW is on top and nothing has so much as even scratched at its heels so my point again is just stop...just leave WoW out of discussions of new games you just make your self look foolish..and crazy

def. Crazy - doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.

So go ahead and title the nex-gen MMO the 'wow killer' then look up the def. of crazy.

Nadia I am not disagreeing with what you said.  My point was WHEN EQ hit the market there was nothing else to play other than UO esp. 3D mmo yes it had many games follow it trying to take its spot.....WoW on the other hand launched into a sea of mmos which your boston globe article states, least of which was EQ2 2 weeks before WoW ....that was the point of my reply...WHEN EQ lauched no competition, in contrast WHEN WoW lauched it had many MMO's to compete with. And when the dust settled....well you know this story ended.

Yeah, EQ2 was essentially the competition to WoW and launced pretty close.

Sword of the New World was initially a commerical Release here (though there was a same product called Grando Espada or some such) and was sold in stores and there initially was a subscription.

Ryl... lol ugh. It was sold in stores, was touted to be a pvp game and offered 1 million dollars for the winer of a pvp tournement. However, it was discovered that there were hacks or cheats and they had to postpone the tournement until they got it fixed.

Yadda, Yadda, Yadda, eventually the game sort of dissapeared.

Or FFXI. FFXI's *current* subscription figures top EQ's all time high. Now, I admit, a good proportion of those are Japanese, but they pay their monthly fees like everyone else, play on the same servers, and even party with NA (and now EU) players thanks to the auto-translator. Why don't they count?

In any case, I'd match just FFXI's NA population against UO's total pop any day of the week.

  • NadiaNadia Member UncommonPosts: 11,798

    FFO does count

I added the NA qualifier to circumvent its known worldwide popularity  (same goes for Lineage)

preWOW, in 2003, FFO did exceed EQ (forget the numbers but it was something over 600k)

not bad for a Console mmo

The OP makes a terrible point.  WoW does not "set the standard."  WoW is an aberration, a fluke, an outlier.  It isn't the standard anything.  No MMORPG will ever have as large an audience again.  Even Blizzard has realized this and they've admitted it when they stated that WoW 2 would never reach the sub numbers of WoW.

The sooner developers get it through their retarded skulls that 250k to 400k subs is indeed a smashing success the sooner we can finally get past the WoW clones that have, and continue to, hold back this entire genre with stupid games that are poorly developed.

Yeah i fell you. I think Blizzard will kill itself personally because they dont give the players big content like other mmos do like EQ2 granite eq2 has to do this to keep its player base but one day the players will realize they are paying money and blizzard isnt giving them what they want. And People who say any game is going to kill WoW needs to get there heads checked because WOW2 will kill them ROFL hehe =P thought id say somthing corney there.

  • AmalaricAmalaric Member Posts: 480

Blizzard itself will probably kill WoW by in their turn killing off all the interesting characters in the lore as fodder for the raiders.

Did this make any sense to you?

IF you find a game you enjoy playing then just play it....WHy is it so important to people whether the game has 10 people or 10 miilion??  Its almost like some players ahve a mob mentality where the ycan brag how their game has 10 million subscribers while your game only has 200k......Its a "My game is better than your game" attitude.

  • VicksburgVicksburg Member Posts: 181

No, 10 million is only the beginning in on line RPGames.

In 5 years time we will be laughing at these numbers, because the market isn't even at 25% saturation.

Wow will probably get to 12.5 million worldwide alone after WotLK in the beginning of 2009.

And the next King will just do better, I am sure.

Look at the markets that still need to be explored: South America, China, Russia,...

And in US/EU even today every day the standard Wow boxes are being sold many times more than the latest PC releases. So many more  players play video games and only a handful knows the MMORPG genre.

The next decade, the video game industry will be all about on line gaming.

Wow is just the first massively played MMORPG.

The others are just not good enough to tap into the market: unpolished - underdevelopped - amateurish - no fun to play - too limited - too difficult to get into.

The game that will be the next King in a few years time will have to do BETTER than Wow in ALL aspects and this kind of game isn't born yet.

Imo as long as a MMO has one server with an active population its fine by me.

WoW may have 10 million players but the max on the big servers is about 25k i believe and average is about 11k.

Now whats the difference between EQs server with 10k and Wows server with 10k? nothing

Those 10 million subs certainly doesnt make WoW any better hell EQ releases more content than wow anyway.

Ikavadas you actually make the same point essentially. I believe Wow should be left out of comparasions with current and new mmo's let it be what it is, becuase it as you call a fluke. You are right about the sub numbers as well 250k-400k is a great success. While I get your point, I don't agree that a game can't achieve the numbers that WoW has.

The sooner developers get it through their retarded skulls that 250k to 400k subs is indeed a smashing success the sooner we can finally get past the WoW clones that have, and continue to, hold back this entire genre with stupid games that are poorly developed.

Now here is where I disagree. I think there are a couple excellent games out there but the companies made one of 2 mistakes that cost them true success.

1st was not making the game playable on cpu's without upgrading. This is my personal belief on why some of the promising games just died because the game world is empty.

2nd was customer service. I don't think I have to go into detial too much here. Unfortunately most companies don't see this as important to give the paying customer.

Im telling you this right now, in the next two years WoW's numbers will be cut in half.

Alot of blizzards playerbase are people that generally dont play computer games, grandma's, mom's, dad's. they dont know any better there are better MMO's out now they just dont know how to find them.

alot of these ppl playing WoW were introducted to WoW by word of mouth they dont come to sites like this. they are happy with simplistic games they dont know any better.

WoW has about 4.5 million players in NA and Euro and the rest are korean gamers that use a totally diff method of payment and pay way less than we do.

He'll blizzard is actually thinking of making WOW F2p in korea.

Any game that convinces you to it play instead of WoW is a WoW-killer.

I mean, who really gives a shit who has the most subs as long as you're having fun?  This whole issue strikes me as being like corporate e-peen waving by proxy.

The battle between fanboi vs anti-fanboi continues....

Seriously, by posting how much hate towards the anti-fanboi Wow killer crap, what will happen? You got more fanboi flaming you. WIll it help stopping the forum flooded with WoW fanboi bashing other games? Or the hype of another game that could be the next "WoW killer"?

    NO!

You are talking like a fanbois and merely base your statements on subs not facts. The reality is WOW as a game has been passed long ago and by many games.SUBS are just that subs, game components ,witch is how a game should be rated are two totally different things.

Easiest way to show these facts are by using car sales.Number one sales in canada for like 15 years was F150 and now the CIVIC.Does that mean they are the best car made?just because they have the most sales?not by a long shot, but some people just can't see with an open mind and stick to simplified facts like subs to rate a game.

here is another tidbit to think about.Do you think for one minute all those players that are happy in WOW and have several maxed out toons would just up and leave even if there was a game that was better?think about it with an open mind and rationally, not like a fanbois.Sure there is and will be others that leave but a LOT will not.I use the term fanbois as anyone that would state there game is the best no matter if GOD himself came down and said it wasn't.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Thats a good point on the subs vs gameplay but the OP was just saying hes tired of hearing the WOW KILLER thread. Which in definition of a WOW KILLER would be to KILL ITS SUBS.

    { Mod Edit } Blizzard hasn't announced a WoW2.

Not to mention you think WoW is a fluke, when you clearly are so new to PC gaming you don't know that nearly every game that comes out of Blizzard is a NUMBER ONE SELLER.

Diablo 2? Was the #1 Online PC game of its time, sold 13 million copies.

Starcraft? Number 1 PC game of its time, over 9 million copies sold.

    { Mod Edit }

{ Mod Edit } you don't know the difference between Korea and China. There actually are relatively few Korean players.

As for the playerbase being cut in half, the statistical possibility of that is next to 0%. WoW has never dropped in subscriber level and is still growing. In addition, they just launched in Latin America, which means an entire new culture will be getting into WoW-- a new set of countries.

  • Pr0tag0ni5tPr0tag0ni5t Member UncommonPosts: 263

Wizardry you obviously need reading comprehension. That goes for others that have replied this way. I no where say that WoW is the best game on the market. No where. So at some point to be labled a fanboi I would have said WoW is best and X sux. But, again I did not say this anywhere. Once again I DON'T PLAY WOW!!!

I come here to read what others have to say about new, up and coming games only to find 95% of the posts about  new game X, is that its going to kill WoW. I would think that others could see how ignorant they look when subs only continue to go up daily. Lets put it on a percentage scale...how accurate do you believe the sub numbers are?...50%?....less?...more? Ok lets say only half of the numbers are right....4-5 million subs....what game that everyone said to 'hurt WoW's numbers' is even close to that? None.

If you want to disscuss how great you think a game is then do so...just leave WoW out of the disscussion. If you hate the game that bad why do you spend so much of your time consumed with commenting on it? If you seriously want WoW to go away...find out where they keep their servers and bomb the building. Then just maybe WoW will die.

    K thx
