Underground vs Commercializm.

There was many talks about regression in MMOs. Many peoples deny it. Where is the truth? It hides in the words "Underground" and "Commercialism".

In the beginning there was only darkness... After that come the light.

In the world everything come in pure raw form. After that human process it and make it simple and easy to use. Thats the core of human progress. Some peoples discovers, other improve it, and at last everything reaches the masses in the simple and polished form.

In the MMO everything come with so named sandbox gameplay. Raw, prime and wild. Only few peoples get into it. With every year companies simplify it and give it to the masses. Is it bad? Or you just do not like it? For shure I do not like it. With the time I realize that I like underground in any form - in the music, in the games - raw, prime and wild. This give me great feeling and inspiration, it lead to unique innovation and personality.

With the time everything get to the bigger audience. It become simplified and polished. More and more peoples goes into it. It get to the masses. It become a commercial... It looses his raw and pure glamour.

Because of this I think  there never will be a "successful" sandbox MMO.

Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

tbh i didnt understand your post. But im gonna take it as a "do you think comercialized development of MMOs is better or worse then Underground developed MMOs" question. TBH i believe underground developed MMOs are more successful. It doesnt give people time to freak out about the game's content, and it gives the developers less time to lie about whats going into the game. Games which are known for a long time build alot of expectation up over the years, expectation that is usually crushed upon release. Although it aint the developers fault, its the new MMORPG community who wants a polished release with no downtime and updates every 12 hours.

For the most part, I favor "Underground" style games because they are often in it for more than just sales which means that there is a greater confidence that the game provider will remain true to the theme of the game(as opposed to adding whatever new trend comes along). However, it takes more than simply non-commercialization. It requires knowledge of gaming and engineering, both of which are often hard to come by without investors who are attracted by commercialization strategies. Obviously, the games which fit this profile are few and far between. I think maybe Sigil qualifies as such a style developer. However, once they sell out to other companies which are commercialized many of the benefits are lost.

    I agree with the above.

Underground enterprises tend to have a lot of support and customer feedback.

A lot of real enduring classics are made this way.

    Counterstrike is one example.

Also I have much lower expectations of stuff that is either free or cheap.

On the other hand, I like to see games with buff graphics and suitably bugless. I'm not by any means anti commercial although I am more wary of the commercial process as it's loyalties are split.

Second Life is a highly successful sandbox MMO.
