Does a higher percentage of SWG-players use X-fire than is the norm for MMO-players? I keep reading threads about SWG being dead, yet it scores the highest playtime of all the Station-titles out there, and the time played everyday seems to be pretty high.
I have only played SWG after the NGE and never really found it fun (playing VG where SOE actually does a great job at the moment). So if X-fire shows decent numbers how come everyone says this game is dead?
For example, the numbers today show that it is played more than FFXI, almost double the time of EQ2(!) and about half the time of Lotro (which is doing well by most peoples account). I find this strange when compared to all the "this is dead" posts I read.

being played more than FFXI, doesnt surprise (in europe FFXI was never THAT popular), more than EQ2.... bit of a surprise...half of LOTRO.... well that is a surprise.... but .. well, I have no ideia about the value of X-fire based analysis.never used X-fire,most of the people I know also do not use it.
1. SWGemu is using the SWG client so when you run the emu on Xfire it shows up as SWG.
2. Only on average; Xfire users playing per day 918.
So that's like 900 users playing SWG a day on xfire and alot of them are probably emu, I know 3 of my ex guild mates run the emu on Xfire for example.
Most people who play games like EQ don't even use Xfire.
So you can't count on Xfire numbers.

Talking about SWG much?
Overall, there might be too many variables for the stats to come to any conclusions about the game population size.
However, you can use the stats to compare to previous Xfire stats to develop a trend of Xfire users. The current trend is that amoung the Xfire userbase, SWG play hours have been increasing
lets see the numbers in a month or so now that the vet trials are now over.

So what's happened lately then? 2 extra hours a week? I find it funny how you avoided the thread I made that showed SWG tailing off in a big way.
FYI Obraik, the figures you avoided back then were..
Current figures are..
So how exactly does 4205 to 3990 show an increase? That's a decrease mate, and that's during a month when EVERY vet could play for 4 weeks for free. The future ain't quite as bright as you think
...The spread of secondary and latterly of tertiary education has created a large population of people, often with well developed literary and scholarly tastes, who have been educated far beyond their capacity to undertake analytical thought.
i wouldn't call 4k a player base
still i was right everyone remember i told you that the nge has less then 5k people playing it.
i guess another vet win is in order a shame too winning all the time is getting boring and it still doesn't get pre-cu back.
Keep in mind that the developers have sanctioned unattended character play. So someone can leave their character logged in for 24 hours racking up xfire time and never actually be playing the game.
Xfire also tends to be more popular among PvP oriented people. SWG is really the only game on the station pass offering that has any decent PvP. That could be why it rates higher than most of the other games.
I disagree. Though the leveling in MxO is horrible, I believe the PVP is awesome. It's just a bit more personal, and a bit more fun. But it all boils down to opinion.
Oh! and I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I absolutely love Planetside.
Sorry, I should have made it clearer, my fault. The total is for hours played, not subscribers. However to put that into context, as stated above AFK play now being perfectly legitimate the hours per user are likely higher for SWG than for other mmo's, Obraik for example has stated that a lot of his logged time is afk, some 66 hours I think I saw for last week, that's 264 hours on SWG's logged in time per month just thanks to Obraik.

Just to be clear this is in hours per day
theres 900 people on average playing on xfire a day
+ This counts emu and live players

Planetside used to be good back in 2003 before SOE ruined it and now it has hardly anyone playing and probab;y merged to like one server, there isnt even a free trial because the cost of bandwidth outweights the people who try the trial and go onto the subscribing lol.
Most of the developers left Planetside too because theyw ere fedup of the way SOE treated them and the game, they wern't even given any testing time and I've talked to some of them about it over the years and twhy they left and they all told me the same story.
Wish them developers great luck though because Planetside was a fantastic game before hand.

Interesting answers everyone!
May I ask where you can see how many X-fire users that play a certain game, I only know where to find the hours played!
Each game has it's own breakdown, just click the games name on the chart you get the hours played from, SWG is here http://www.xfire.com/games/swg/Star_Wars_Galaxies_An_Empire_Divided/
...The spread of secondary and latterly of tertiary education has created a large population of people, often with well developed literary and scholarly tastes, who have been educated far beyond their capacity to undertake analytical thought.
Answers my OP then, except for that you can never know how big a % of a player base that use X-fire of course.

Off topic I know...
I'm just happy to see a MMORPG staff member come here to engage in discussion rather than banning people or locking a thread because of misbehavior by its users. Cheers this goes a long way to public relations.
Oh wait, I was off topic...
Please don't ban me

I can't really speak about MxO with any real amount of experience so I will take your word for it. Also planetside was enjoyable for about a month then got pretty boring. Not that it is really a MMO, but it is the type of game the Xfire users would be attracted to.
I was really trying to relate the PvP offerings of stationpass titles in a comparison to what xfire users might subscribe to and why SWG typically sees more hours than any other SOE title. Instead I lumped quality of PvP into my statement which made it rather sweeping and miss target a bit. Sorry for that.

You're right (and sorry I don't read every single thread on these forums ), I haven't been memorizing the hours for SWG each time I've looked at the page over the last few months. I have been remember the position in the list over the last few months though (SWG was at position 21 when I first looked a couple months back) and made an assumption based on that.
So, assuming you're tracking the numbers correctly, you're correct, the hours haven't been increasing. But overall amoungst all the MMO's Xfire tracks it's moved up in the list of MMO's played by Xfire users. Would you happen to have tracked whether hours were down overall for other games too? Being that it's summer in the US, one could expect that overall game hours are down due to people enjoying summer activities.
Obraik accounts for most of the Xfire stats pertaining to SWG.
Tecmo Bowl.

Summer, vacation time blah blah blah etc, it's NO excuse, you realise they reactivated somewhere in the region of 300k-350k accounts for a whole month for free? They still haven't seen ANY increase in time played, none at all, it's decreased lol, I don't care if it's summer, Christmas or the coming of the apocolypse, when a game gives a whole months free time to 200% more people than it currently has playing it and still doesn't see an upswing, well that says more about SWG and SOE than anyone else needs to.

So, what about it moving up 6 places in the last few months then?
So what about it having less played time even though it had potentially 350,000 more players with free access?

If total hours are decreasing then I would have to assume that the game did not raise six places, but instead 6 other games sank below what SWG was already at. It isn't like a game gets more popular as people play it less.
Well Obraik made a big song and dance because it hit no.8 on the mmo chart last year, the highest it had been for a while, it's now number 15 on the mmo chart. It's been on the slide ever since Obraik highlighted it's "high chart position".
For reference it's highest ever position was no.8 over ALL games, not just mmo's back in 2004, I doubt many mmo's would have have charted higher, maybe EQ2 and WoW above it back then, it's now at no.50 in the all games chart.

You can thank vet trials and the duck for that.

That was a different Chart, it was for an entire month, and it was limited to only MMO's not all games. Even so, if you bothered to read what I posted you would have noted I said in the last 2 months - which is when Xfire started this new chart system they have which based on daily activity.
Daffidol, if hours are down overall for Xfire usage then the total hours for SWG (and other games) is likely going to fall too. In a way, the rank place is a better stat to judge rather then total hours since it's proportional to Xfire's own ups and downs.
Edit: And as of right now, SWG has a total of 4752 played hours for the last 24 hours
