Where should noobs be looking for their first time pvp'ing in EVE?

BaselineBaseline Member Posts: 503

I'm a bit lost on this one. I'm not completely clueless, I've read about EVE's brand of pvp, watched some videos. I'm pretty much looking to get going in a low-skill PVP blackbird E-War / Jamming setup from battleclinic that was well-rated.

Where should one go to get their feet wet? Tried EVE-university, they're not taking new recruits since they're war decced atm. Heard about the factional warfare thing, but I'm a bit clueless as to where you go after you hit the "Enlist Me" button, and also unsure if that's the best bet for a PvP noob. I look at the recruitment forum but I have no clue what I'm looking for really, which is why I more or less am posting this here.

I've heard small gang pvp is the best place to get some experience / confidence... But it's not just like there's a button that says "press here to get in a competent small gang not full of retards". Afterall, that's what I am looking for right now: Some beginner PvP experience and confidence. I want to primarily PvP in this game, and I've done missions to the point where I have about 100 mil isk, so I have my safety net to learn and lose a blackbirds that are under 5m a piece.

To think I was so sure of myself waltzing into pvp in countless other mmo's, this is a reality check.

grab a thorax, rupture, omen, arbitrator or a frig of some kind and head to providence. lots of ratters around there. however the ruling power will set you red very quickly and drop a battleship fleet with capital support on your head.

    fit a cloak. good luck.

Join a newish corp involved in a small war, or a corp hunting lowsec pirates

Edited my post a bit. I'm trying out a blackbird ECM role. Doesn't require a ton of skill but seems to be useful to gang pvp. I'll probably die a ton but oh well. On to find a corp I suppose.

You can always head to low sec and just solo pirate. Use the scanner to pick fights you have a reasonable chance of winning, and when things are quiet you can do a bit of ratting yourself for some extra cash. With just a frig or cruiser you can have a lot of fun and your risking very little. As a solo pirate there will be some situations where it is impossible to avoid losing your ship (ie gate camps will kill you every time you run into one, where as with a group you could potentially take out the camp), but the upside is you keep 100% of the loot/ransom from your targets.

    Try the faction warfare out.

its a very useful role. however let me give you a hint: the blackbird is also known as "the flying coffin" by its pilots. ill let you figure out why :)

also, faction warfare is probably a good plan.

The biggest advantage of caldari ecm is range.
Even with relatively bad skills you can reach out very far with racial ecm. Be sure to get on the edge of your optimal range and out of harm.

In our gangs, we often use someone in an interceptor to fly away from the fight, and then warp the falcons, blackbirds and scorpions on his position.

Additionally, after getting some experience and t2 jammers, you can start putting rigs on the blackbird. I certainly would never rig a t1 cruiser, but rigs for ecm are dirt cheap. There are rigs that extend your optimal range greatly, even to the range of sniping battleships and beyond. You will certainly not lose it too fast when you jam from 200km out and watch for anything incoming. Even if a ceptor catches you - you are an ecm ship after all.

Flying ecm is definitely the best choice for anyone starting new as caldari. But you need some teamwork to survive the battle and stay in the fight for as long as possible. Fittings are here on the forums, too, by the way.

How does that work exactly? I know you hit the "Enlist Me" button. But, after that? Is it still the same thing of finding a corp and getting on their vent? or is it like some instant-action setup where you go into some big clusterf*ck battlefield and start shooting?

When you enlist to a militia you gain access to their agents. These guys will give you a mission to attack or hold a specific point in a system for a certain amount of time. The point will be in a deadspace where only ships of a certain size can go.

Once a place is active any of the opposing militas (with the right size ship) can fly to the deadspace pocket and help defend or attack. Think of it as King of the Hill, EvE style. Coordinating with the other people in the militia channel is probably a good idea.

The militia is a pseudo-corp. You have your own chat channel, are supposed to work together with the others in your militia, and are permanently at war with your opposing militia. ie - they can attack you anywhere, anytime and vice versa.

As you can restrict it to purely frigate/destroyer action I think it could be a nice way to get used to PvP. But it's your call in the end, and although the other militias are not common in your home area it does put you at increased risk... Your call.

I believe in a bit rougher method.  Join a corp of a major alliance like BoB, Goon, RA, etc... and learn the ropes.  Be a scout for a few weeks and learn the ins and outs of fleet movement, ship roles and how they interact within a fleet then move on into ECM.

This will let you fly with good FCs and good pilots.  You will experience everything from large fleet lagfest battles to capital ship hotdrops and POS warfare to small roaming gang pvp.  You will see, do and experience more this way and learn much quicker.

When your done learning leave and join a smaller corp thats more suited to what you like or stay on and move up the ranks and FC your own fights.
