I spent quite a bit of time yesterday just running around getting familiar with the game again. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring Silan getting to know my adversaries. I decided to hunt some mobs for mats for crafting. The crafting in Ryzom is second only to SWG. Very indepth and allows for a lot of experimentation as well. So after crafting some very nice QL 30 swords and a few knives, i finally picked up my jewelry crafting skill.
I helped a few people do some quests and did some healing for a couple groups, then it was off to the jungle for some questing of my own.
I decided to start a new toon and play for the newb island so I could get the hand of this again. It's been a very long time for me, but I'm enjoying every minute of it.
SO! I would have to say crafting and exploring are my favorite things I like most in Ryzom. What's yours??

Roleplaying with the unique lore.

My favorite thing about Ryzom, by far, is the people who play it.

I started. I'm barely level 11 in melee and 10 in magic and havent done craft or havest quests yet.
But so far I'd say it is pretty bad ass. I'm looking forward to making my own gear and racial and or FFA PVP sounds very nice. It's cool that they give pve and pvp options, and also nice that at least so far, I'm not leveling super fast and am not getting uber gear drops.
I like earning my stuff.
It seems odd that they have firearms.
I want to ride a white elephant thing
The complexity and the freedom of choice.
I am still looking for the lore that people talk about, but since I am still much a noobie, I am hoping I just haven't gotten far enough to experience it.
In-game, the lore is not disseminated via quests except for twelve (hopefully more someday) "encyclopedia rites" which, while complex, do not ask you to do something absurd like saving a town. Instead, they are rites organised by races and tribes to allow interested homins to prove themselves worthy of receiving a knowledge-containing amber cube and a special ability or crafting plan. It's logical that many different people can undertake them.
There is also some lore available at faction temples. At this point it is prudent to note that not all is as it seems. What homins think they know about their history comes from what wasn't lost in the devastating Great Swarming of the non-playable race the Kitin, and what the higher powers have told them.
Another source of lore is players. When Nevrax owned Ryzom, live events were run that revealed fragments of lore and advanced the storyline (which could differ between servers, and did in some ways) by various amounts. Some events were tiny in scale and effect, some were just festivals and sports. Some were much more significant on a much larger scale, and some were somewhere between. There were invasions of cities and regions by the Kitin, and once, Kitin from the deep Roots occupied every region for about a week. Anyway, players who attended those events have unique experiences which they can recount to you. They may remember very interesting pieces of lore that were revealed. They might explain how recent history progressed. But, naturally, what they say will be subjective and may be coloured by their racial and religious biases. It's up to you to seek multiple sources and try to discern the truth, as well as guess the answers to the many mysteries of Atys.
We hope that the new owner will resume the storyline events.

The FREEDOM baby! The FREEDOM!
Ive only been playing this game for a few days, but I feel completely liberated from the class-theme park mentality that comes with most MMOs these days. In Ryzom you are free to become the best that you want to become with no class restrictions. You are free to be a melee fighter, who also casts spells, or a magic spell caster, who also has very nice melee dps. Both of whom can heal themselves and others. Moreover, you are free to customize your melee attacks and spells to fit your needs. As if thats not enough, you are free to customize your gear in a huge variety of ways, using the rich and complex, but highly intuitive foraging and crafting systems.
For me, fun has always equaled having options. The more options you have, the more freedom you have, and (for me) that equates to more fun. For those who prefer to have NPCs and Developers telling them what to do, or directing them along a pre-determined path, this game may not be for you. But for those who like to set their own goals, and embark upon an unknown adventure of their own making...you will love this game. Its just the type of 'sandbox' in which I like to play.
The suprisingly good graphics and decent animations dont hurt. But for me its all about the freedom. This game could have the graphics of Diablo 2, and I would still love it.
The sandbox gameplay.
Where themepark games try to hide that they are copying WOW, games like Mortal Online and Darkfall make no attempt to hide their inspiration

Actually, the lack of quests.
As long as quests in mmorpgs' are defined by generic tasks, I'm far better off without them. I prefer a well-crafted world full of details, which I may explore and discover at my own rate, compared to walk the same path and ending up the same as all other so-called "heroes".
.............
When in doubt, troll.
Q - Will the new owners/developers change it do you think? Make it more mainstream and 'easy' and more inviting to people who can only play 40 seconds a night?
Hard to say. As far as I know, we're not even sure who the new owners are, much less their plans. I hope it doesn't change too drastically.
Edit: to stay on topic, I think my favorite aspect of the game is the creation of custom stanzas.
Some great stuff here.
I just thought of another thing that i really like about Ryzom. I love to Rez my fellow Homins that have fallen in battle. It's quite challenging to see if you can get to them before the timer runs out. That's a hero. The one that comes to save the day, and there are a ton of them in this game. /bow homins
The people, the adaptability, the graphics, the game world...
what i like doing most? Exploring and showing newbies around (and showing off a bit, hey, can you blame me? xD )
I like The My Cirle:
- I use char to find stuff for crafting: fight or harvest. My time, my effort, my stuff
- I can use stuff I find to make a gear for myself. My time, my effort, my gear
- I can use gear I make to find even better mats, witch I can sue to make even better gear, witch... you got the point
---------------------
- no classes, no restrictions, I can wear whatever I want and then I want. I I want to be mage with shield and sword, so be it. Who cares if it sux? Point is that I can :P Or mage in heavy armor? No problem
----------------------
I just started, only got 35 in all skills. Still haven't seen ML. But want to get 100% bored of newbie area so I can leave it without any regret

Wow! Thanks for the suggestions! I have actually been contemplating trying to take on a role of chronicler once I get a better grasp of the gaming mechanics. I have already caught (but not recorded) some of the lore from the entry area. I saw mention of many tribes in the mainland and thought if might be a good tour of the land to travel out to the tribes and try to find info on what they do and where they are... whether that is a viable option or worthwhile who knows. Guess I will find out once I get to know the game a bit bettter.
Thanks again!

Yay for Terroc!
Been looking for that link some hours yesterday, but really couldnt find it. So thanks for quoting that piece, so I can bookmark the page now!
I love my friends and more importantly my enemies
may they live a long time, ryzom is pretty special
I like the crafting and prospecting/digging aspects of the game......Its nice to have something that is a little bit complex anyway....games like WoW/LoTRO have such boring tradeskills that I lose interest in them quickly.....Its a nice change not to just be handed everything.

I love the originality and atmosphere of the World. Its emersiveness and wide open feel.
Though I´d love to see some things changed/ubdated/finished I love the "underdog" feel of it
I love to walk around collecting unique sights and pictures to use in Videos and I also love to interact with all the friends I found here On- as well as Offline
I love the way the game helped change me, to become what I am today.

Do you dare to adapt?
I like the uniqueness of the community, all its crazy happy homins and the friendly banthering in Universe Channel and in around channel at stables. I love the fact that whenever a newbie asks a question about the game, homins (often more than one) will interrupt their discussions and actually do their best to provide a real answer, no matter how many times that same question has been asked that day/night/hour.
I actually love answering those questions myself. Can't help it.
I love the fact that it is one of the only communities where you actually have a chance to get a rez from a random homin if you ask in region channel... and I love to race other homins to be the first to give that rez whenever I can... And then yell "Sherk to the rescue ! :P" in region chat .
I love to run around a city, looking for blue dots (players) on my radar, then run up to them and /wave or /bow. I love the custom emotes in the game and the fact that you can use their animations combined with a custom text.
I love harvesting for other people, If I was only harvesting for myself, digging for ambers and seeds all the time would drive me nuts, I like to find new digging spots that I didn't know about. I like the fact of feeling like a useful harvester even if I'm not a master forager in any land yet.
I like teaching young homins what I have learned myself as a young Silan refugee, not so long ago... Sharing knowledge, learning new things from oldies, all that jazz.
I like trading goods and services with other homins in this game. Getting good deals for my guildies' gear when I can't craft it myself. I like adding new contacts to my trading list; be it as providers or customers.
And to be honest, I like the fact that you can actually get your name out there and make a reputation for yourself : good or eeeevil as you wish, or entirely crazy if that floats your boat, if you just make a little effort to be part of the community.

Personally I love the change of pace when it comes to learning curve. It's fun (and sometimes frustrating) to again play a more complex game which forces you to think and research and understand things from the very start. Brings me back to my AO days (and Ryzom beta, of course).
Whether it's something I'd stick with over time remains to be seen. My limited and impossible-to-schedule play time forces me to solo a lot in MMOGs these days, and I have a feeling Ryzom isn't too kind on that in the long run.
Hey,
What I like most about Ryzom is the (most of the times) caring and respectful community (most of the times cos we are only homins and can turn loony and emotional at some points )...
I love the non instanced world, the unique ecosystem I have been exploring for three years and still holding some secrets...
I love the freedom of action (Ryzom is a class free game, you can be everything on one toon), the customizable actions/spells, the community (did I already mention that ), I love killing Yuboes those evil creatures ...
Oh and the community too
Every MMO player should experience it imho.

I love the fact that this game is not classed based as mentioned in the previous post.
I love the fact that I gain experience from doing a particular activity rather than some crumby quest.
And Ocyx too... they are cool
