...how some gamers look at games?
Let me clarify a bit here. There's plenty of gamers whose first MMO is WoW. WoW is a very selfish game. You don't do anything for the Alliance or the Horde unless it benefits you (or, if you're Horde, maybe if you're bored). Since I played DAoC before WoW, when I went into DAoC I really got the feeling of realm pride. 'Course, I wasn't an MMO expert since DAoC was only my second MMO, but I didn't care about gear or rewards for myself as much as helping my realm. Then I went into WoW and saw how everyone wanted to help themselves more than their "realm".
Do you think WAR can bring back the DAoC feeling again, especially for ex-WoWers who are so used to a selfish type of game?
I think people will get their gear and then say, "What now? I've already got my gear, why should I keep playing?" If they don't have a sense of realm pride (it's like a sport...you wanna help your team or not?) then they may just quit or switch to the opposite side. "Realm pride" will be crucial to WAR if it's going to keep players for years, just like DAoC. I just hope that it does a well enough job of changing the mindsets of selfish gamers.

i was shocked when i first went into WoW and someone in my guild SOLD me some gear...
I don't know if it will change players core motives but there are elements of WAR that will encourage realm contribution, e.g. certain instances and content will only be available to those that hold a city. Gear lovers are going to want to be in those areas.

Lol. You should see Cairne right now. Level 5 green weapons can sell for up to 12g. It's disgusting.
@OP: I don't know about that. I think a lot of the problems with WoW aren't caused by the game's rules, but rather by the attitudes of the people who play the game. I don't think attitudes are really that contagious. Jerks will be jerks, it's true, but I also think that the spirit of cooperation present in WAR will take away the requirement for being a jerk as a method of progressing through the game.
I was shocked when I was in CLOSED BETA for WAR and another player tried to sell me green gear! hahaha Seriously, the guy was from WOW (as he let everyone know in gen chat)....and he had the nerve to spam chat with items to sell. Everyone slammed him.

That gives me some hope . Probably the only time a stranger was generous with gear in WoW was when my hunter was level 26. Some undead comes up to me and gives me a green helm (which sells for 85g in the AH) because it was leather and he couldn't use it. That's one time, out of almost 2 years of playing.

@OP - I'm a big fan of pride, whether it be self pride(getting new weapons or costumes that are rare), realm pride (beating the opposite side till they run), or Guild/Corp pride(beating any guild till they give in) i'm always all in as long as it makes me, the player, feel like I did something to make that happen.
This is not a game.

In Everquest i never seem to have any problems with greed.
My first run-in with the WoW mentality you talk of (having not played WoW myself) was in AoC. I was an officer in a pre-launch guild that took in many ex-WoWers as members leading up to launch. Once the first dozen or so guildies maxed out at 80 we laid out plans to begin raiding 2 to 3 weeks away so there would be enough time for the 'mass' of the guild to catch up. At this point there was a steady stream of level 80 toons leaving the guild sending me PM's along the lines of ..."I have all my blue Kesh gear so I need to go to xxx guild so I can raid for epics".... They couldn't even wait a couple of weeks to start farming raid bosses! I was stunned. With all the work that goes into managing a large guild I found it a little disturbing that people would jump ship the second the guild was no longer useful to them in their gear progression....
Anyhow the guild is going strong and the core members are loyal to the teeth, I just couldn't believe the attitude of many of the WoW refugees we picked up.
I hope that WAR teaches (or even enforces) the 'for the the greater good' mentality. I expect it will be a bit like toilet training a puppy, time consuming and annoying but very do-able.

Yep I think people like that will be easy to drive out of the game. Just like this game should be fairly gold farmer proof at least as much as any game can be.

I will say this WOW at the beginning did have realm pride of a sort. Blizzard just never took the ball and ran with it as they could of and went the whole D&D adventure route now it's just a mess with no pride for your faction. I remember my first rogue. I got into a pug with a few guys I met that were about 5 lvl's above me and they saw that my build was ill equipment and basically gave me a make over with new armor and a nice set of daggers. I did not ask them for anything they just hooked me up and we ran quests for hours and I pop about 3 or 4 lvl’s that night and from that point on we played on and off for months. We never considered charging anyone for anything if you had it and someone needed it we just gave it to them. I hope to see that kind of buddy support in WAR.
After playing MMOs since the start of the milenium, I've learned that you can't control or even predict other players. Even people you've played with for years can sometimes just do a total 180 spin.
Selfishness runs very deep, we all have a little bit... not to exteremes like some games have seen (some WoW servers, RF Online, FFXI). It does little to force or 'train' someone to not be selfish, it's usually in the way they were raised in real life. I do see many 'gear' gamers and raid players leaving WAR very quickly as there is a very small amount of gear (in comparison to say WoW/EQ/VG), and the game is not necessarily forcing you to have the best of the best gear to survive. It's mostly on par with tactics and using your skills.
This will force a large amount of people from the game because that is what has been spoon fed into gamers for years. End game = raid = gear = the best. Happily since WAR has decided to do what few other PvP games have done and base it on skill and skill allocation builds, and a minority towards gear.
In WAR we will see many min/max'ers such as in WoW build forums/discussion. You will see many people wanting to order people around, because they think they are better than others in tactics/skill. It happens in all PvP games, but I think WAR will be a nice opener for the PvP market to expand upon. We will see some selfishness and blatant whining from PQs, from lack of end game content, from being forced to play multiple servers because one is too high and keeps getting order queues. Overall I think it'll be a nice time waster unless some issues are fixed, but that's a bit off topic.

Players have changed, the Internet hasn't changed.
Back in the EQ1 days, most of the players were early adopters of the Internet, eg, nerds.
Today everyone and their grandmas are online. Everyone has broadband.
So what you are seeing in MMOs is a broader cross section of the general population.
Look at Usenet. Usenet used to be a jewel in the Internet, today it's a cesspool. You're never going to see a community like the old communities again, it's a thing of the past.
If WAR is fun, you'll see a lot of 14 year old males playing it.
LOTRO has a mature community, but it has a slow pace that the kiddies don't like.
