I found the article to be true to my experience of PvP in the New Game Enhancement version of StarWars Galaxies. I used to enjoy the PvP a lot, especially with the Temporary Enemy Flag (tef) system that tagged you as a possible pvp target anytime you opened up on opposing faction NPC's. So, I'd start blasting away at stormtroopers and then find myself in a firefight with nearby imperial players. It was very immersive for me, and I had a lot of fun with it. PvP could take place anywhere at any time with this system.
The new game mechanics, however, don't have anything like the TEFs. Also, the ridiculously fast-paced NGE combat took a lot of the strategy out of pvp for me. The fast pace led to 5-10 second pvp contests, a loss of interesting combat animations, and misfiring special attacks that caused pvp combat to simply not work. The game has also tried to copy a first-person shooter feel, but offers no collision detection, which really takes away from the experience.
Tbh, at this point, with the current game mechanics, I have no idea how they could salvage it. They seemed to tear apart an enjoyable system and replace it with a Frankenstein's monster made up of parts of WoW and parts of Battlefront. That really seemed to make a mess of things.
Also, when they introduced the WoW type GCW rankings, they stripped everyone of their previous ranks. People had already lost a ton of things via the NGE, and this was just another unnecessary loss. Rank conversions would have been greatly preferred, and would have retained more pvp players. People will downplay the rank loss, but those aren't the people that left the game over it.
I suppose it's also relevant to mention that I really enjoyed pvp on my TerasKasi Master/Master Doc character, with force enhanced combat attributes. When they deleted Teras Kasi, Doctor and all of the force enhanced combat attributes, it was...less fun 0_o.
If you want to see some cool SWG pvp, check out youtube videos of the massive pvp campaigns that we used to have in the original version of SWG. Those were truly epic. Good memories
Can people please stop arguing over this soggy piece of toast and just move on, i just really wish people would put their energy into stuff that's upcoming with a decent track record of devs. like Cryptic perhaps or even Warhammer (though it's fantasy and not sci fi) and then move onward and forward. This game has gotten very tiring watching it be talked about and argued over for how many years now? Sorry for ranting but come on people. Move on.
On that note, I'm very much looking forward to the new StarTrek MMO, and StarGate Worlds. Great IPs for an MMO ^_^.
I'll prolly still chat about SWG though, I put a lot into that game and really connected with the community. I think I can do that and still look forward to some new stuff, and enjoy CoH currently (pvp in there in the level 50 zone is freakin' awesome.)
I agree with him in a certain way, but what bothers me most about this article is that you have a hired reviewer on MMORPG.com being completely pessimistic on a game. That's just wrong to me. No duh guys, I know its a review but please have some sanity here.
Star Wars Galaxies needs way more PvP attention than it already has, and in my opinion, Star Wars Galaxies should be run by another, more interested company. Everyone knows that, even and ESPECIALLY us playing it know as well. We play for the Star Wars world for the most part (even though its a horrible depiction, its the most freedom I've seen from any Star Wars game).
No PvP activity though? I would think not.
At least on my server and several others, there are usually planned PvP battles once or twice a week. I play on a server that is usually VERY LIGHT too. If you're in a guild, you get a mail about the event on my server. To give you an idea, there were about 2-5 groups over time on each faction fighting all around Tatooine for 8 HOURS last night. 8 HOURS, and it never got boring or overpowering. This is the server that is usually very light.
Base busting and all of those things are true, and I'm not that stupid -- everything sucks, and it all needs attention. but I would like to know if this reviewer actually plays SWG anymore. There are plenty of things to go around, but I haven't had much fun in any other game PvPing. Although it doesn't have the population it had, its grown a lot since the NGE hit us and has become very decent.
Look you have 11million people playing WoW, and then you have all the other games. According to MMOcharts, WoW is 68% (something like that) of the MMO population. So counting all of the MMOs out there vs. that 68%...I would say SWG is pretty average. I visited Starsider server the other day, and several cantinas were literally PACKED. I asked and apparently it was like that all the time. Even looking at in-game events, I am astounded and might even call it above-average.
I'm not saying SOE rules, because the game needs to be given to a company where ALL the employees are interested (don't get me wrong, dozens of team members love SWG). If you ask me, most of the game aspects should just be regutted INCLUDING the graphics, INCLUDING the engine. Not turned to pre-NGE...just something new.

I am tempted to return to CoH but also more likely to hit Warhammer next month when i have the money, did closed beta and looking forward to a few more days when it opens back up on the 7th.
Something about CoH,CoV is really different to me, i guess there weren't any like it when it released, but for my pvp i'm burning the midnight oil over TeamFortress 2.
All right, nothing new with this article. We all know that.
Main problem is that SWG devs do not listen to many ideas playerbase offered. Those ideas how to make GCW worth playing for are well thought and developed.
I wont write anymore because this all pisses me off.

Sort of feel the same way - aside PVP on the Kauri server - that could take awhile (merge that server)
I agree with alot of the article, but I also disagree with parts of it too.
I agree that there is a lacking of PvP content and action towards general PvP concerns. I'd love to see a revamped Planetary control system, revamped player bases and revamped GCW static bases. PvP content has been the same for around 2 years now and it is indeed time for a serious update.
I agree that the way they treated the base clubbing situation was bad. I've always been anti-base clubbing, making it against my guilds policy to base club and doing my best to discourage it amoungst my faction on my server. The bad thing was that Devs on the forums were declaring it an exploint yet GM's were saying the opposite and actually generating events at these weekly baseclub events. It was dissapointing because one of the big things advertised for the new GCW rank system was that it would end the ability to buy your rank.
It's hard not to think that they're not taking PvP into account with the recent profession updates. The abilities given to Dark Jedi, Officer and Commando all seem rather excessive for PvP combat - a Dark Jedi can strike for 12k damage in 2 seconds, an Officer can hit for 20k in a matter of seconds and Commando's can get DoT's on you that tick for over 2k each. Most people only have 15-17k health...
I disagree that there's no PvP activity happening on the servers though. Overall, PvP activity is increasing on a weekly basis, according to the stats found at http://swg.activeframe.de/bb-std/tp-en/main.7.html. Chilastra has been the most active PvP server lately (at least per active GCW officer), you can usually find some PvP happening no matter the time of the day.
I disagree that PvP zones are bad, too. Overall, I think they've increased the PvP population in the game as they provide a centralised area where you know you can go to and find PvP going on. It makes PvP as accessable as PvE content. Of course, PvP can still, and often does, happen anywhere in the game outside of these PvP zones too.
I miss the classic swg. Even though swg was released to early and it really didn't get the love that it deserved. I'm not a pvper I enjoy crafting but it has changed so much that crafting and swg has become mundane and a lack of community.
If SOE understood what they are giving up when the choose not having a swg classic server so many have said they would return and reactivate there account for a classic server.
But it maybe to late to do anything now that theres info that KOTOR is the new starwars mmo. I can't see LA allowing two starwars mmo's running.
SWG had a great PVP system before SOE ruined it trying to act like WoW.
Funny thing is evey time they impliment WoW it looses more people.
When are game companies going to realize if people wanted to play WoW they would....PLAY WOW.
I had a pitifull comment in SWG last night that shows the attitude of GCW.
I was asking how much standings you needed to join a faction nowadays.
I mentioned I used to be imperial because the Rebels I usually encountered were usually ganking people like thugs. He said "it don't matter which side your on now. We're all friends now, this isn't 2003 anymore"
All friends now?
GCW is nothing more then mindless rewards now thanks to trying to yet again copy WoW.
Also SOE needs to work on stopping these PVP exploits.
There are serous exploits that allow people to use skills they should not be able to use, just as one example.
I guess they think playing cards is more important then time and money into the actual game

So naieve arent you. Soe designed that pvp system before wow had it even thought of. Remember the jedi system? Yup. Thats all this system is, except relabelled.
As for wow's system, they blatently stole it off SOE. Think back a few years, there wasn;t even any pvp system or battlegrounds in wow for months after release. Trying to say SOE copied Blizzard is just laughable.. As for the state of swg atm, it really isn't that bad of a game. Sure it has it's faults, but seriously, what game doesnt. The sandbox element of swg is still there, you can go out and craft, go loot items, go pvp and have city raids, whatever you feel like. What lets swg down is the stigma attached to the game.
Look how far they have come since the awful release of the NGE in nov '05, theyve come a hell of a long way.
What the game needs in all honesty is for people to try the game again. Instead of people logging in, seeing none of their old friends are online ( because thye all have teh same attitude) then logging off again.
They need to actually go in game, find a good guild, who can show them the ropes of the new systems, instances whatever, and try them out. Just logging in, and moaning and griping without putting forth any real effort, does not achieve anythign whatsoever,
The TEF system that was originally in the game was a great system. It incorporated PvE, PvP, and RP together IMO. If I was an Imperial officer, and I saw someone trying to kill one of my fellow soldiers (NPC or Player) I was able to come to their defense. Thats the way it should be. I shouldn't have to just stand there and watch someone assinate fellow soldiers, and be able to do nothing about it simply because the person is only set up for PvE content. I am generally more into PvE, and RP in a game. I PvP when it makes sense to do so from an RP perspective. I remember when there were great PvP battles back when Anchorhead or Bestine were the places to hang out at. It started to die during the hologrind. Then it just got worse as the devs kept nerfing, and "balancing" everything to cater to the whiners. If I was playing my mutt character of TK, and armorsmith I should lose a fight to a melee stack. That person invested all 250 SP into combat. I invested part of mine into it. I got just as much enjoyment from the game due to my character having several options as to how to spend time, but those options didn't always include combat. I think the balance was there in its own unique way. The sandbox feel to the game started to be removed from the game at the CU, and was obliterated from the game with the NGE.
I am just somewhat surprised that anyone felt the need to write an article on SWG. Sony killed the game almost 3 years ago. The thing that replaced it isn''t anything like what SWG was intended to be, and honestly I have tried to play it when Sony sends the come back for a month for free promotions. There is almost no one playing. By far the deadest servers I have ever seen on any game. The gameplay feels like a random collection of bits and pieces from other games, but without the development time those games invested into making it work for them. The original game was far from perfect, but it was fun to play. It had bugs and exploits, but I have yet to see a game that doesn't.

You don't seem to have any idea what's been going on with SWG for the past number of years. With most of the changes made to the game, they openly admitted an attempt to make the game more like WoW to appeal to Wow's absolutely huge audience. Pointing this out isn't laughable, it's just reality.
Finding a good guild is good advice, but much easier said than done in some of the more empty servers. If you log in, and if you find a good guild, then you'll still have to face all of the issues highlighted in the article, which was actually fairly balanced from my point of view. I've read much more scathing posts about the state of pvp, the GCW and the game in general. This was a nice attempt to be objective and informative I think.
i agree 100%. To me this goes all back to the one thing that none of the star wars galaxy version ever trully had... Core Star Wars Components. There should be war all over teh place. Furious pvp for planetary control on land and in space.
I agree with this post 100%. It was one of the reasons I finally left SWG after 3 years....NOT CU or NGE.
ah I remember one of my first pvp experiences....bestin (gimp) ...anchorhead (rebs) and I show up as a medic and see 3 gimp players with their 3 faction ATST's wipe out the entire garrison of 38 rebels most of which had 3 rebel troops each. I the lone medic flung myself across the battlefield trying to provide field medicince to the incapacitated troops....saving one life...only to have mine instance snuffed out by those massive beasts......oh the fun.....
I agree w/ JesterRodo, Kauri pvp was long dead as well as the server as a whole. My guild of 478 was down to about 3-5 at my end days. I gave up on SWG ...and I am a real die-hard SW fan. After 4 yrs from day 2 I could take no more. So me and a few like minded others decided to make our own. It was good meeting you at the con though Jester.
loved the game since release, wish they would have never changed it. sad, took me forever to be a jedi, then they made everyone jedi. i remember playing and we would attack a rebel base for hours and it was so much fun. o well.
Screw the haters, I'm interested. Thanks for the notice/article, MMORPG.
MMO games played or tested: EQ, DAoC, Archlord, Auto Assault, CoH, CoV, EQ2, EVE, Guild Wars, Hellgate: London, Linneage II, LOTRO, MxO, Planetside, SWG, Sword of the New World, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, WWIIOL, WOW, Age of Conan
The truely sad thing is that both Star Wars and Star Trek do not have MMOs, when both universes lend themselves readily to such a treatment.
AS far as PvP, it should be prevelent, universal and non-consensual. Anything else is a single player game played co-op with others too afriad to fight.
"Screw the haters, I'm interested. Thanks for the notice/article, MMORPG."
You know, only the real clueless use that term. This is a discussion forum, and if everyone provided a rosy picture it would be a completely useless discussion.
Not to say that SWG is not a fun game to play still, it has it's moments, just as many have pointed out the depth and breath of the game has been removed long ago. It is up to you to make your own evalutation.
The important thing to note here, most of the dedicated players are long since gone and they were what made the game what it was. Now all you are going to find is a few players attempting to do what many did before.
Be sure to pick a server with some population as most are just ghost towns.
PVP is utterly abhorent in SWG ruined by the NGE and the carebears that took over the game afraid to get thier hands dirty ruined it as well. Why do carebears not PVP ? Cause they can go Baseclub and sit afk and earn a rank and rewards for doing nothing. This game has gotten too casual player friendly as noone wants to risk dying or work for nothing anymore . The mindset in SWG now is why does he have it and I dont? Now I want the shiny or reward cause he has it and if I dont get it I'll whine about it.... (cries) The game is dead and the TCG just put the nail into the coffin.. (RMT for in game loot anyone?) This game stinks of bad mismanagment , bad decisons, poorly implemented content, tons of bugs , hardly a collision detection system there. Content that noone asks for is created. The economy is stagnant from people buying thier credits (high prices -greedy players) hostile community, and many other disapointments about the game that are 2 long to list . But thats my 2 cents...
I really disagree with you. Have you really understood what Star Wars Galaxies is about? There are plenty of PvP updates in SWG, balance is addressed in every update! Oh my God.. I hate journalists that spread lies.
Spend a weekend watching the movies, then spend a weekend playing SWG.... See the difference?
S*D
P.S. for that matter, the Jedi Knight series had more of the Star Wars spirit in it than the entire run of SWG.
I didn't last long on this game and I am a huge SW fan.
I am still waiting for KOTOR online, but I will NEVER go back to SWG, even if they paid me $15 a month to play it. It just lacks. Id go into detial, but does it really matter?

I dislike pvp as a general point of fact.
However.....
You PvP fans need Content? Type /pvp twice and you're SF and ready to go.
Beyond that, the Tick needs to be galaxy wide in ALL NPC Cities (not PC Cities to prevent alt farming).
The rapidity of the decay needs to be looked as, since thanks to the NGE kids and the Vets that whined pre-NGE; Decay is supposed to be a bad thing.

I agree with this post 100%. It was one of the reasons I finally left SWG after 3 years....NOT CU or NGE.
Let's party like it is 1863!
Wait...there's a Star Wars MMO?
ah I remember one of my first pvp experiences....bestin (gimp) ...anchorhead (rebs) and I show up as a medic and see 3 gimp players with their 3 faction ATST's wipe out the entire garrison of 38 rebels most of which had 3 rebel troops each.

Greetings,
The truely sad thing is that both Star Wars and Star Trek do not have MMOs, when both universes lend themselves readily to such a treatment.
AS far as PvP, it should be prevelent, universal and non-consensual. Anything else is a single player game played co-op with others too afriad to fight.
Enjoy,
S*D
A dead issue in a dead game.
RIP SWG, you were my first love.
I didn't last long on this game and I am a huge SW fan.
I am still waiting for KOTOR online, but I will NEVER go back to SWG, even if they paid me $15 a month to play it. It just lacks. Id go into detial, but does it really matter?
