I've been playing this game for several months now, and it is easily my favourite MMO (EQ2 being my second). I noticed that with the introduction of Book 14 there was this live event thing, and heralds and town criers began appearing in towns all over. Also read somewhere that these interactive events are going to be more common. However, I still do not know much about them, and was wondering if someone could explain them in more detail.
From the little I know of them, am I right in thinking that they are server-wide events, wherein the players all have to gather materials (such as the ring lore) to unlock something in the game? If so, is it only the max players who are on that book that get the benefit of seeing what happens?
I would love to be able to take part, but not just in gathering the materials, but also in the actual live events themselves. It seems odd that they should be isolated to just those who have max level characters.
In a few months this will be a mote point for me, as I hope to have a 50 then a 60 after MoM, but what of the bulk of the other players who do not have a character at max? Surely there could be an event for lower levels to fully participate in? I know people might say they already can by gathering the materials, but to me this is just the donkey work, without the gratification of seeing what their hard work resulted in.
Of course I could be totally wrong, so can someone please tell me about these events.
Also, on a side-note, I was interested in learning more about the other activities which the town crier mentions. Such as the festivals and the like. I sometimes see a world message saying something about a festival or a race, or something like that. What are these events? What do they involve doing? And where do you go to take part, and at what time? So far I have only seen one, that being the festival in the North Bree-feilds. It appeared to be empty though, and nothing much to do, so does it get busier at a certain time, and what can you do there?
Thanks for any information that you can offer. I love the idea that there are other things to do in a game other than just the normal quests and combat, and crafting.

In all, if you collected the parts to turn in, (anyone level 21 and up could) then you were part of the event. The only other part was actually doing book 14.
The other event you speak of is for levels 1-50. It is the festival. There are several of these through out the year, and anyone can participate. The races are for special mounts, that you can win, but can not ride until level 35.
The events include dances, yard and house items, clothing, fireworks, and several other fun stuff. Blackberry tart recipes were from one of the event, and it is no longer possible to get the recipe, unless someone has it still from that event.
I do hope that they bring in some interactive live events, as EQ did before the Scars of Velious, I think it was called. The events after that were really dumbed down and all hack and slash.
Thanks for the reply Lazer7. I don't think you understood my post though, as I know about gathering the ring-lore, I myself handed in quite a lot, and fair enough I got some reputation items as my reward. However my point is that I did not really feel as though I was part of that event. I know I was, by handing in the bits of ring-lore, but I did not get a chance to see what happened when the server reached 70,000 (or whatever the imit was). I was wondering if it was only players who were on Book 14 and therefore at level 50 that got to see that.
If so, then I was wondering why they could not make an event where everyone who wanted could witness the result of all the hard work. You see what I mean? Hopefully I shall be max soon anyway, so it won't matter to me, but for all the other people on the server, it would be good if there were events that could involve them more. I heard one of the devs speaking at a press conference back when Book 14 was just coming out, and he said that the live event (which just occurred) was the first off many, so I was curious to know if it was always going to be aimed for End Content.
Also, on the matter of the festivals, again, thanks for answering. Your advice has actually came at a very good time. As at the moment I am doing the horse quests for the guy at North Bree-fields (which is how I noticed the festival, although I don't think it was on as it was quiet). You mentioned that you can win a horse, or the chance to buy a different kind of horse? As I will be looking to buy a horse in the next day or two, could you elaborate please? What kind of horse, and how do you win them (or the chance to buy a different one). Also, how much are they, and how are they different from normal horses?
Thanks again to anyone who answers my questions.
As far as the event, to the best of my knowledge, the ring-lore just unlocked Book 14 (activated the NPCs and the door leading into the Book area). As such, you'll see it whenever you're a high enough level to do the chapter. It'll be there. I don't believe there was any special performance or anything other than town criers announcing the success, but perhaps someone can correct me if I'm wrong (I wasn't online when it happened).
For the festivals, the horses are won by entering races. They occur on two different tracks and take place every 10 minutes (whether there's any competition or not). You have a certain amount of time to pass through each gate on the track, and the first person to cross the finish line receives a voucher for a festival horse. In order to actually claim the horse, you need 6 festival tokens, the race voucher, and a receipt for any standard horse. If you already have a horse, that horse can be traded in for a receipt that will work for the barter. Essentially, you don't really win the horse, you just win the "right" to use the skin. The festival horses aren't any faster or sturdier than the standard horses, they just have that different skin that's only available from the festivals (think "collector's items").
While we're on the topic of horses, you may or may not know that there are NPC factions which allow you to purchase things based on your standing with them. Several of those factions have horses which are sturdier than the normal horses (they take more damage before you're dismounted), but they're still the same speed. Those horses cost a bit more than the normal ones (about 2 gold more) , and require Kindred standing (or rank 9, in the case of the PvMP horse).

There was no event or special activity. Once the ring-lore was at 70,000, it unlocked the rest of book 14, so that it could be completed. It does require you to be level 50. All of the epic books 'till this point did not require that.
The horse race is for a token. You will still need to purchase a horse, 4 gold and 200 silver, and trade the note for the horse and token for a festival horse (or pony). This time, it is a white horse with a green blanket under the saddle. This is just the tip of the iceberg. There is also a drinking quest in the shire, where you go tavern to tavern. There is a farming quest, to grow pipeweed. There is a great many of things.
There is a walkthrough on the festival if you need at www.council-of-eriador.com. I forget where exactly it is in there, but there is a search option you can use.
Oh, my bad. I had read some of this article; http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/45/feature/2203
and I had thought that all those players were all at the same spot to take part in some special event that happened when it got to 70k. However, if I am right then now I understand it was just to unlock the rest of Book 14, and all of those players were there just to continue with the book?
It would be neat though if they did run world events that had something happen at the end rather than just unlocking stuff. (Although I am not complaining, as I love that too)
Also, thanks for the info about the horses, and the festivals. Good to know that there are other things to do in the game. Speaking of which, I think I shall go and play now.
There was sorta a live event where Amarthiel showed up in random locations. Amarthiel was controlled by a dev. She had some adds you could fight and they would drop some outfits or some other rewards. I never saw her, but you are right in that particular content would have mainly been for a high level character since I think she showed up in places like Angmar or Forochel.
The event in that article (I was there too) was just all of us who gathered in Rivendell to countdown the final ring lore collections. Dancing, spell-casting, music-playing and aoe emoting galore, but the only "thing" that happened was a world broadcast telling us it was done.
After that, all those waiting to finish up Book 14 rode off to Mirobel. I rode there to take a peek (the Rivendell stables takes anyone level 50) but I'm not on Book 14 so I couldn't do anything else and we don't have the whole zone to explore until Moria launches anyway.
As for "not feeling like you were part of it" you absolutely were. 70,000 items at 5 per character, per day is a lot and we all appreciated everyone chipping in and participating in unlocking the new content even if everyone (myself included) doesn't get to utilize that new content immediately. So many quests and activities are centered around just you or at best, you and your small group, so it was great to have a single activity that everyone on the server (well, everyone above level 21) was able to participate in towards a greater goal. That type of thing can help build a sense of community on your server.
Ah, that article was confusing, then. It made it sound like there was some special event for unlocking the ring lore.
Anyway, while it's certainly something, I dunno how the ring lore lore thing can build a sense of community. Talk to the herald, kill some orcs, talk to the herald again. Not real deep. And no interaction with the community at all, in the Lone Lands (where I did it), I was just about the only character around. Hard to have a community when no one talks outside of Bree (and I guess Rivendell, which I haven't gotten to yet).
And the only things I got were items I'm not really sure how to use (Reputation items, only I can't find anyone to trade them into)
The lack of any in game stuff is something of a disappointment. Somehow Sword of the New World, a really crappy free to play MMORPG, has live events 3 times a week, sometimes more. In the 2 months I've played this, the only thing I've seen with a GM are the Amathawhatzit attacks, and I never even was close to one.
R.I.P. City of Heroes and my 17 characters there
Aye, I thought that as well. I'm hoping that future events will be more involved, and that there will be some special events that we can participate in as a reward for the server completing a task. I'm sure that I read somewhere that this is being planned. Not that I am complaining. I understand that with the advent of Mines of Moria approaching, the devs will have had more than enough to contend with, other than running events. We shall see what the future offers, and I for one am excited about what is to come.
I agree with you that there is very little sense of community outside of the main towns. I play on Laurelin, a European RP server. However, in the months that I have played, I have seen very little (if any) role-playing outside of the Prancing Pony. A lot of people speak ooc in /say which I hate. The only times rp happens is when there is a planned event, but that kills spontanaeity (sorry for spelling). The lack of communal spirit seems to be something affecting all MMO's at the moment, more an indictment of our society than anything else.
As for reputation items? I had the same problem. Basically there are several factions within the game, such as Men of Bree, etc. You know when you meet them, as they have gold stars above their heads, and on the mini map. These guys will barter with you for certain types of rep items. Usually in batches of 10. You have to complete certain quests for them first before they will barter with you, and you have to be a certain level. One of the first who I was able to barter with, is the guy near Tiinuvadir (again sorry for bad spelling) in Evendim. He gives you a quest to collect sashes from tomb-robbers, and when you have done it, then you can barter the sashes (a rep item) with him to increase your standing with their faction.
On your character screen, there is a tab where you can check your standing with each of the different factions. Each has a little blue bar, which if you barter rep items or do quests for them, it fills up. Each time you fill the bar, you reach the next level of standing with that faction.
There are some good reasons for doing this. Get on well with the elves of rivendell and then you can use their work-tables (including the superior work tables), and also you can obtain special weapons and items from them, etc.
Hope that helps.
Ah, good points, and I'm sure my sentiments of community are tainted because I participate in our server's global LFF and OOC user channels. The normal channels are limited to your current zone, and places like the Lone Lands have always been fairly low population areas. But within GLFF and GOOC, players server-wide were very interested in things and promoting people to get involved and have a good time with things. That made the difference, aside from the silliness in Rivendell with all of us hanging out (and crashing the server, oops).
