Look no further my friend the best sandbox game that ever was has been reopened. It is the eve online of fantasy games and is free to play for now. Nice steep learning curve though so be warned but if you keep at it you will be in for a hell of a ride. Check it out !!! I have cancelled my WoW account and my lotro account for this one and ain't planning to go anywhere real soon. At least till Darkfall ever releases!
Darkfall is like one of those "too good to be real" games for me

Currently in alpha testing and they havent really committed to an official release yet but signs point to sometimes early next year.
Skill based system, no class, Post Apocalyptic world, dirveable vehicles like dune buggy, ATV, Bikes, horses and even a car kinda like Mad Max.
Vehicles will be player crafted and all the best gear will be crafted.
If you liked SWG Pre-screwup......this is something you dont wana miss!

In todays landscape other than EVE, I would say Ryzom is your best choice, not to mention its free for the moment. As far as coming soon™ there are a few others in development worth following like Fallen Earth, Earthrise and W.E.L.L. Online.

Im kinda new myself having not played for like 3 years but everything you want in a sandbox is there. I started a new account and several new toons before deciding on an Zorai. You might want to check out some lore of game while youe downloading. www.ballisticmystix.net might be a good place to start. There are others just google Ryzom lore or check main forums for background. See ya on Atys!

PvP isn't FFA as some were looking for. Right now PvP exists in these forms:
The best option is if you interested in PvP, is to seek out a PvP Guild once you get to Ryzom, or tag yourself for Faction war.

Can you loot stuff in that game ?
I mean what is the punishment for death ? Can people loot you , or you just loose exp ?

There is a xp death penalty you have to pay back before you earn normal xp again. But you dont lvl up like in conventional games. You actually level up the 4 main skills you can learn. Harvesting, crafting, magic and fighting. every item in game is player created and all loot usually consists of materials for crafting. Ranging from quality lvl 1- 250 in 5 different quality tiers...You will have a lot to learn on Atys but learning is half the fun!
Actually I just found out there is a lot more than just the 4 basic skills you start the game with...
