I've done hyjal, bt, ssc, tk, gruuls kara, za, zg, mc, i've done every bg up to exalted on my original shaman pre tbc, i've farmed pvp sets multiple times on multiple chars. I've gotten to 1800 ranking on my paladin.
I've played more wow then most of you ever will since it's creation.
Guess what?
WAR is nothing like wow.
First off let me get into the classes
WoW and WAR's only similarity in classes is the fact that they stuck to the "holy trinity". A bright wizard isn't a mage, a magus isn't a warlock. A shaman...isn't a shaman.
The closest comparison you can draw is the combo point system for WH/WE, which i'll admit share a origin, but even then the charges you earn are for your char rather then on your targets. Neither of these classes are truely "rogues" as wow rogues are though.
Let alone the action point system totally revitalizes the way "mana" is used.
Then we get into the pve. Heres where it's possible to draw a comparison, simply because there are quests, and you have to kill things.
But in all elements beyond that, they don't resemble each other that greatly. WAR has a much more get er done style of questing, where you kill things, you go to areas, you do your quest. Whereas wow's entire quest system is more grindey, get in, grind it out then get out.
Then we get into the public quest system, while this may seem minor, theres a TON of these in war, in all ranges. In each tier. Theres roughly 3 per chapter and at level 14 you'll be in chapter 6ish, with roughly 15(first chapter or two only have a couple) public quests per side, so by 14 there is roughly 90!!! public quests.
A public quest FEELS entirely different then what war does. The questing FEELS differently.
Then theres the UI. You have spell bars, portraits, and stat screens OMG IT BE THE WOW. here's a newsflash to you people
EVEN RAGNAROK ONLINE HAS A NEAR IDENTICAL INTERFACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The PvP again has a different feel, WAR's world pvp feels like DAoC, WAR's bg's could be related to being instanced bg's similar to WoW, but there are way more in WAR and there are varying styles. For example the T1 dwarf vs greenskin bg has 3 capturable nodes that each side has to take, similar to arathi basin right?
Wrong. It plays absolutely nothing like AB.
Then we get into the way group pvp is handled, in wow, it's basically who can dps and focus fire the best. In WAR it's who can balance a defense and offense within the group to protect itself while destroying the enemy. If you play WAR like wow bg's you will lose. And frankly it's why teams do lose in WAR. They play it like WoW with the go alone and dps down your target when you die, run off on your own randomly.
WAR and WoW share similarity being class/level based mmorpgs, with a quest based pve.
I completely agree, ater quitting WoW after 3 years i was waiting for something new to catch my eye. I tried lotro CoH and AoC and all were ok but not what i was realy looking for. But for some reason WAR just feels right for me, now im just expressing my own opinion here so don't think i'm trying to bash any games...but im just happy a game has felt right for once, although i will have to see how long it lasts.
The problem is, 90% of the game's population is going to end up being casual gamers, or simply MMO players that don't research the game online every day. They're not going to care about every intricate difference between the two games; they're going to sit down to play WAR, and think that it's a WoW ripoff. The majority of people that play games don't analyze them to death and you have to admit, in terms of interface/art/game basics, the game really does resemble WoW.
Personally I know that WAR isn't a complete clone, but I don't represent the entire gaming population
and lol @ the people calling the Warcry writer a fanboi... you're the ones jumping down his throat because of your own fanboyish insecurities
Honestly is being a WoW clone a bad thing? The UI in WoW is my favorite UI out of all MMOs and I wish WoW would be a clone of WAR in the pvp department with meaning behind pvp. Oh well.... Everyone has a opinion and the WoW clone one is getting old so please come up with a new comparison, maybe... WAR is like WAR.
"The amount of time I was actually able to spend with the game wasn't much, and judging any game on the first three levels of play would be hasty, let alone an MMORPG. Even with that in mind, though, WAR was underwhelming."
The writer based their review of WAR after only playing 3 levels and then claiming it a WoW clone. I am not going to jump all over the fact they dislike the game, but they way they did their research is almost like reading the first three pages in a King book and then saying it is a Koontz book without reading the entire book. Another thing that bugged me that they say that they are a WoW fan, well so was I, and I know that some classes did not become awesome to play until later levels, like when priests made level 30. In the end I can not believe their review and until WAR is fully released to the public I would wait to find a review were the writter actually spent time playing the game and leveling. Then again that is just my opinion.
i read the review - any one who knows anything about games realizes it takes more than 3 levels....having said that you shouldnt need to get to lvl50 to enjoy the fun either but this guy didnt give the game a chance.
If you put a person in a room who knows nothing of either game and showed them a couple screens from WAR and WoW my best guess is they'd think they look a lot alike.
First impressions mean a lot. Without looking at any of the details of either game its clear that WAR looks a lot like WOW.
People at Warcry.com should be more careful though. that review was written to slam WAR.
who ever wrote that needs to go and DIE! I'm no war fanboy, most you would prolly call me a hater, but that writer is a complete moron who will never leave wow. put it this way if you think wow has a good visual direction, I pity you stick with asian games and wow.
Be it me to complain, I actually laughed when I read barely halfway in to the article. Almost choked on my drink. Now, I've read the starting threads and the ending threads and I'm sure they mostly consisted of the three levels thing, the fanboys on both sides raging it out and opinions flying back and forth like they actually make a difference. So I'm going to toss my simple one in, just for fun.
The writer of this review is a dickhead.

Criterion for a WoW clone; 1.) Interface: If its on the same side or even remotley close to the same possition as it is in WoW. 2.) Autoattack: Thats right folks, Blizzard revolutionized the autoattack. 3.) Less than realistic graphics: This rule applies lightly as everyone knows AoC is a WoW clone too. 4.) PvP: WoW was the first to have it, everyone else copied. 5.) Public Quests: Thats right WoW has them too you just did't look hard enough. 6) Smooth combat. Thats' right WoW is the only game to have smooth combat therefore it must be patented by them.
7) Combo points. One WoW class has combo points therefore all the varied WAR 'combo' point based classes MUST be copying WoW.
8) WoW has instanced PvP therefore every game that has instanced PvP is copying BGs If a game consists of any or all of these "features" the game is a WoW clone and should be sued over copyright infringments. If you have ever played DAoC then you are banned from making a WAR review because you might reveal what the graphics are based on and might be able to combat the ridiculous claim that 'Blizzard tried to buy the WAR engine'.

So dude at Warcry first off didn't play WAR enough to know more than anyone that watch gameplay videos. I've played WOW for three years and was in WAR open beta. That wasn't a very good read from someone that doesn't have a clue.
