Hmm i chose not to play WAR for pretty much the exact reasons the OP stated.I am glad i was right on my assumptions,i usually am. You notice the next few responses were all the same.....the game is in early stages give it time[first impressions are HUGE].I said from the beginning that nobody has put in the effort for PVP and i doubted these guys would do it either. The other thing is that a game based solely on RVR pvp, will fail .It does not appease enough people to want to play. The fact players can just get bigger /stronger by literally dying over and over, really makes the game quite lame and anyone who enjoys no risk at all,is being a very superficial gamer. That basically means you are in the game for no reason at all.A lot of people say they play games just for fun, well to most i would think some sort of a challenge is what brings out the most fun.Besides that no one can tell me dying and respawning is fun,so there you have no challenges with decent rewards for failure..hmmm yep sounds like a very weak game, especially when the PVP part is there bread and butter,it would have to be superbly done, since there is no other reason to play WAR. There is basically no content and even if there was ,having a RVR PVP game would mean players are too busy to enjoy any other content outside of constant killing/dying/respawning.Even the goals of killing are quite weak and wouldn't have myself or any i would think interested in the goal, who really cares if they control a city? You think everyday when players log on,there like oh WOW i gotta logon we control the highest tier city..lol,nope there just logging on to repeat the same old killing/dying/respawning.
How is it people who don't enjoy gaming are superficial? Im kinda lost as why you would say that, and quite frankly think you don't know how to pick the right words. This game was desgined for RvR. This game has always been represented as just that. If your playing this game because you enjoy PvE or like sandbix type games with huge death penalties, then this game will not be for you. And as to your content question, are you serious? Theres more content in this game then any other game I have ever played. Sure there isn't housing or a super robust crafting. But this game was never about that. It's about WAR, and killing people.
And before you reply, a death penalty is just that, a death penalty. You still die/respawn/ and comback. No mmo would create such a huge timesink for dying. The retention rate of subscribers would fail. This is why you don't see sandbox games at the top. This is why they conform to the majority. Im not sure what you really want an MMO to do in this area, but if its death and no respawn, then it won't be in an MMO. You only have to look forward to games like Diablo. Those games can sustian that penalty because of the game design. And claiming the tier city isn't fun? Yes it's repetitive to some point, but everything in an MMO is repetitive. To have a dynamic world were everytime you logged in it looked different cannot happen. Atleast not anytime soon. Systems are not up to that level, and not everyone is going to jump to a game thats so hardware intensive.
People like you need to step outside the box, and just enjoy gaming. Sure, you can hate somethings and love the rest. But gaming is meant to be enjoyment, not a chore. If its turning into a chore for you, then I suggest not gaming.
Well I never thought this would happen THIS quick, but
I think I found the reason of all the posters above:
"Combat stress
Combat stress reaction, in the past commonly known as shell shock or battle fatigue, is a military term used to categorize a range of behaviours resulting from the stress of battle which decrease the combatant's fighting efficiency. The most common symptoms are fatigue, slower reaction times, indecision, disconnection ..."
....The ratio of stress casualties to battle casualties varies with the intensity of the fighting, but with intense fighting it can be as high as 1:1."
Burn-out.
I think the game needs anti stress points. Or it could be a very quickly burn-out affair.
“I didn't think it was a "breath of fresh air", but a "breath of the same air I've been breathing for 3 years". I found it to be the same boring format with a few sprinkles of new ideas.
I love this game its like taking all the good parts of my favorite MMO's and putting them together and adding some new stuff. By doing that this all that air I was breathing has been recycled and fresh.
Not everyone will like this game and thats fine with me I don't want this game to be a WoW killer and have10 million subscriptions. I just want it to be a game that I will enjoy for a long time and it looks like its going to be.
You guys need to cut the op some slack. He didn't make a post just bashing the game...he stated he was disappointed and then explained why in detail. All you fanbois are just going to have to accept that the game doesn't appeal to everybody.

he posted his opinion to get the opinions of others..otherwise one wouldnt post if you didnt want to see feedback on it.
WAR is an okay game, and seems like it will be polished for release, but it is nothing special.
Cheers.
This is how I have felt about this game for a while now. But, if anything, I'm having fun so that's all that really matters. Something important that I've learned is that a game doesn't have to be a big innovation to be good, which was something that I used to tell myself. Of course, a game should bring much more innovation than this game did, but it isn't a necessity for it to be a success or just plain fun. I think it did a good job of improving upon aspects of other MMOs and combining them into one game.
Of course, though, the thing about innovation and playing it safe is that it is a gamble. Going the safe route has proven successful for WAR; it's fun. But how much more successful would it have been if they tried something new? Would it make the game flop or that much more enjoyable? That's the question. I'm gonna have fun with this game for a while, at least I hope. But it's not going to be able to hold my attention if any new innovative games actually find something that works. I think for alot of us this is a good definition of a "filler" game... just a game to hold ourselves until the fantasy of an actually innovative game comes along and becomes reality.
Yes Reviews of Beta Community's are so completely accurate and fair....while I understand his sentiments on some of the points that one Irks me. Its completely subjective and doesn't represent the community as a whole. It only represents his personal experience during an OPEN BETA. Usually people are to busy trying to figure out how to play or complaining about some other X game etc the fact alot of this wasn't present for once is a nice thing. Personally I hate general chat...I was in too many warbands & open parties talking in those channels to worry about what X solo player was having an issue with.
Big hint..in an RvR game that has an easy party feature..use it..find the help you need if they don't talk move on there's plenty of talkers out there you just have to look.
Its obvious to me atleast why this article wasn't posted. Its biased and heavily subjective it has no real exploration of the mechanics and how they work with atleast suggestions of how he'd rather see it other than "I wish people got punished for dying in a war" opinion which makes no sense from a game design perspective.
This article would of been great as a personal blog and then ignored its obvious since he's a correspondant for another game he went in with preconcieved notions like so many other worthless article writers without doing any research. A good hint for people who want to write reviews....Research the game...go in with no expectations outside of what was promised & talked about by the devs.
No offense Mike but..your article did suck...it came off as a whine post.

The man is so prejudiced against WAR that it doesn't warrant any reply. And the constant comparisons to WoW are most revealing. No wonder publisher refused to do anything with this crap "review". I know it's a matter of taste but badmouthing a game that there is no social play and "discussing strategies" days before the actual release is just plain ludicrous. That was just one example of the stream of nonsense I've read in OP. Just let this POS thread sink to the bottom where it belongs.
Hey fanboy, piss off. If you absolutely have to comment every negative comment someone dares to write about WAr, at least have the courtesy to actually READ the OP. I didn't see one line where he made a direct comparison with WoW and what hew wrote was quite accurate description of WAR for my short time I spent in the game.

You need to take off your fanboi glasses so you can see the text on your screen a bit more clearly. He didn't mention WoW at all and the only "comparisons" that he made were generic that could apply to any game.
Well, at least you WAR fanbois structure sentences better than the Conan ones and compared to WoW fanbois I've noticed a minimal use of stupid internet memes. I give the thumbs up to WAR fanbois. Of course, when there are three piles of shit on the ground I try to avoid all of them.
These are valid issues a good bit of people will face if they don't get into guilds or socialize much. It is good for people to read this as it may save them 50$. Just know that there is a ton of fun to be had in this game if you go about it the right way, and I think if you read reviews and stuff you will figure that out yourself.
Wow. Lots of clueless opinions in this thread. First of all, like a previous post astutely pointed out, this game has barely been out for a week. People are just kicking the tires and it's expected that there will be no semblance of organization. Second, what do you think GUILDS are? Chop Liver? If you want organization and communication, join a good guild, son! Problem solved.
Interesting reading this post, and many others, what the hell is this whole fanboi thing? so what if you like something you are going to stick up for it lol
Also it is early to judge WAR, I have not played it, infact the only MMO I have really played is EVE, which does have penalties for death, which actually puts players off, why can't an mmo be different to that and not have punishments for death....
Oh and the whole getting something for nothing, standing around or whatever.... why even do that? its obviously going to be boring, you can do that and make your gameplay experience boring or you can go out there and actually DO something to make it more interesting, I think the whole idea of even getting reward for doing next to nothing is partially good, think about it, within the tier there will obviously be more powerful players than others on your side /team / group or whatever, and they may kill everything and do all the work, you may have tried but it wouldnt matter you'd get no reward in any other MMO, whereas on WAR you would still get rewarded..
This may to some be a flaw, but to less hardcore gamers its god send, if you playing a game afk then you are doing it wrong and will be guarenteed to get bored..
Back to more of the OP, while most are completely valid points, some are player created problems.. no community? hell the game hasnt been out long, a community in a game doesnt just appear from thin air, and will your arguement may be valid you fail to elaborate on exact changes you would like to see... ok no death punishments, well what exactly would you like to see? be more specific...
If you walked into a garage with your car and just said to the mechanic 'that dont work fix it' it would be harder to do anything, whereas if you give more details like 'that dont work because... and this might help' you will get further and the fix would be done quicker....
But one the whole I always phrase someone who expresses their opinion, whatever the causes for that opinion, even a bad review / report can be good for a game, and the gamers
If the game isn't for you, it's fine. Not all games suit all tastes. However some of your reasons listed aren't being taken into context.
1. Community:
The game officially starts today. What community would anyone expect from a non released game? As well, Mythic is known for not allowing global chat. One of the things that helped build such a strong DAOC community was the chat/communication system. You have to take an active interest in making friends. Find a guild. Join an alliance. Those are not difficult to do, nor are they inconvenient.
Once in a guild and an alliance, you'll have thousands of players chatting happily away. These are your fellow soldiers; not some random Chuck Norris dude. These are people who you know or will know or has been vouched for through association. This is how strong communities are built. Letting people chat in an open world channel does NOT equate to having a community. It's just people chatting and being obnoxious. Also, in WoW, you RARELY ever got help to a question. People usually got flamed or ridiculed for asking anything. Again, that is a problem with having chat and thinking it is a "community". It isn't. It's just people who want attention. If you want an active chat, join an alliance. These are people your guilds vouch for and so on and so forth.
You don't have to believe me, but a strong alliance is a strong community. You'll need these people and they'll need you; and most importantly they will HELP you. Something to think about is this: WAR is not a game for the anti-social. Consider why that may be the case.
2. PVE:
PVE is PVE is PVE. To say anythign negative about WAR's pve is to say anythign negative about just every game's PVE. At least in WAR, the PVE is painless. No more killing 100 boars to collect 5 boar hooves. It's painless and it is a means to an end.
You've also not touched on the tome of knowledge, which is a big part of the PVE experience. Did you know that it opens up quests, rewards and such for players who explore and do things in game?
For instance, at lvl 9 you have to go deep into destro lands to find and kill a named Dryad. doing so unlocks an item reward which is a sweet looking cloak. You can get this at level 5 if you bring a group. Otherwise soloable at lvl 9. Uber looking cloak for a lvl 5 as a reward for exploring and finding this hidden gem in pve. There are countless other thigns like this as well. Far and away more advanced than WoW.
3. MOBs, difficulty:
Low level mobs in every game are weak sauce and provide no challenge. This isn't a valid point imo. And complaining about bugged mobs in a beta stage environment is also a bad arguement. It's like complaining about being wet while swimming.
4. Boring combat:
In WoW, a purely pve game with some pvp, every class starts with 1 ability. You spam that ability until you get levels for another ability. Same with WAR. The variety of abilities you have is directly proportionate to your character level. Don't expect a lvl 5 to have the 30 or so buttons that a lvl 70 WoW character has. It's futile. By lvl 15, my character has almost 2 full rows of buttons already. Some reactionary, some situation.
I challenge anyone here to reroll a level 1 in ANY MMORPG and tell me how that plays as well as how much you get to do in comparison to WAR. i can tell you now that WAR trumps them handily when compared at an equal level basis.
5. RVR dissappointment:
It isn't WAR or RVR you are dissappointed at. You are dissappointed at people who don't know what the heck they are doing. In fact I can guarantee you were no better and someone was saying the same thing about you. I played DAOC for years and it took me several days to work things out in open field rvr in WAR.
Playing in beta is no indication of how people will play later. It was mostly random zerging and random killing because it's quick fun. We didn't have all that long to play before server wipes.
To expect players to know tactics and strategy in a brand new game not yet launched, is a bit too presumptious. These things take time. The fact that even at such a low level you can PVP outright, gain ranks, gear up through pvp and gain XP, coin and loot is heads and tails above anything else right now.
Quality of players are something that must be built over time. They aren't automatic and to be frank, for most people, the base concept of group pvp is completely alien to people who have never done RVR before.
6. Death Penalties:
This is a matter of taste and does not fit into this type of game. Believe me when I say, any kind of moderate death penalty would break the game. In RVR you will die a lot. I don't care how uber players think they are at pvp, you will die a lot! Most times, consecutively. Penalties will not work for an RVR game. It will break the game. People who talk about death penalties for an RVR game have either never played DAOC or simply just do not understand the concept behind the system and why death penalties can't be in this system.
Conclussion:
At the end of the day, I hope readers on the fence about buying WAR will read my reply and get a more balanced look at the issues you brought up.
At the end of the day, the lvl 1-10 experience in WAR is far superior to the 1-10 experience in any other MMORPG out there. It's biased and lopsided to try to compare the start of a game with another game's end game.
If you don't like learning something new, this game isn't for you. to say that it is the same old game is completely missing the point. the people who say this are the ones who had no intention of really finding a new game. RVR and WAR is similar to other MMOs but the base game is a completely new concept to most people.

first let me say: each to his own and everybody is entiteld to his own opinion.
Somebody in the Thread claims there is no conent.. ummmm yeah exactly, im outlevling my region on regular basis. Even if you dont do PvP/RvR/PQ's there are 3 zones for every Tier. Thers is pleeenty of content there.
The other claim that you gain gold/exp/renown without doing a thing in PvP.. yeah that might be true sometimes.. but have you seen how much that is? usually its 10exp and 1 renown point (mostly!). Guys be realistic.. even if you stand there for 3 months, that'll get you nowhere near level40/80. Renown level 8 needs about 5000+ points to get... now if you get 1 point every few min.. well you can imagine what time it'll take to get to 80.
Like the game or dont like the game ... but please make correct statements that make sense.
This was deined by your editor because your not a writer. I dont care how you feel about the game and my reaction has nothing to with it. I say this because there is noway you a write based on your first sentance alown. Noway a legit writer makes all the mistakes you made in that one sentence. Your grammer is horid; the sentance structure is poor and you use the word on instead of one.
Im not even going to bother critisizing anything beyond the first sentance because noone wants to read a wall of text longer then what you already wrote and it would be very very long).
i understand that I am a poor speller and that I dont all ways us the most elagant grammer; however i dont claim to be a writer either. Maybe you need to take some classes at your local community college then try resubmitting your essay to the editor.
i tried to resist.. but i just couldnt first let me say: each to his own and everybody is entiteld to his own opinion. cheers
Join scenarios and u will see how wrong u are. I already lvl to 5 in an hour and a half while waching a movie, just becouse i wanted to try a new class.
The thing is it is very posible in this game to just click on the join scenario button, enter the scenario run arround and get exp, gold, rep. Such a great design. As someone said u can die over and over in this game and u end up stronger/richer. If u dont beleive me just try it. Now if all think this what a pvp game design should be about just great.
Of course if u do play and get kills u lvl faster and get more rep. But wait a few months when someone creates a bot that lets ur char join bgs u can go to bed and wake up with a few more lvls/gold/rep.
given the game has just come out how can anyone have anykind of real opinion on it as yet . stop trolling and go play some more op then come back in a week or so if you are still finding the game bad . maybe then people will take you seriously . all you ve done is make yourself look a fool making such comments on release day .
And this morning I needed 8(!) whispers before somebody answered "Don't know, don't care....".Even groups don't talk.
They clearly deleted the general interface in general talk to avoid the Wow vocabulary, like BG's and other stuff. Avoiding and killing off the "X is noob stuff".
But just like they deleted the official forums and have a few Gestapo boys handle the warhammeralliance.com forums, this is very much a failure for an open and social MMORPG.
Expect them to "open" the interface to the general chat 5 to 6 weeks after launch.
"Expect them to "open" the interface to the general chat 5 to 6 weeks after launch."
Ummm maybe it's because your server isn't populated high enough, on my server we were averaging maybe 6-7 people a zone. The game just got released today, please give it to the end of the week for the servers to be populated.
bodypass is a WoW fanboy, and has been trolling these forums lately. He, like fingis, doesn't listen to reason and takes every chance he can to slam the game.
Anyway, I talk, and have been involved in a ton of conversation in my playtimes. Maybe that's because I talk though.... Or because I play with friends, or guild mates, or other guild's guild mates.
Actually the longest I went in a MMO without having anyone talk to me or acknowledge my existence is WoW. It made me laugh and say to myself, 'What the hell does it matter if there are 10 million+ players when 99% of them only care about themselves, and their gear.' I had more interaction playing on a 16 person fps server than with 10 million people in WoW...

WAR has mass appeal, much like WOW does (although to a diferent target market).
OP is looking for a game designed for a niche market, and WAR isn't that game.

But one the whole I always phrase someone who expresses their opinion, whatever the causes for that opinion, even a bad review / report can be good for a game, and the gamers
shhh... you might wake the trolls
This review is dead on, but if you base whether or not you are going to buy the game on a review from the first week of launch then you are crazy.
This isn't a review..I never said it was..

i tried to resist.. but i just couldnt
first let me say: each to his own and everybody is entiteld to his own opinion.
Like the game or dont like the game ... but please make correct statements that make sense.
cheers
Well OP is certainly right on ONE thing:
Nobody talked in open Beta
Nobody talked in head start
And this morning I needed 8(!) whispers before somebody answered "Don't know, don't care....".Even groups don't talk.
They clearly deleted the general interface in general talk to avoid the Wow vocabulary, like BG's and other stuff. Avoiding and killing off the "X is noob stuff".
But just like they deleted the official forums and have a few Gestapo boys handle the warhammeralliance.com forums, this is very much a failure for an open and social MMORPG.
Expect them to "open" the interface to the general chat 5 to 6 weeks after launch.
Nevertheless,....

Every WAR copy sold is free publicity for WotLK.
