whats so different in mmo's pre wow. the reason i say pre-wow is because i feel wow started a new chapter in the mmo market. this might be a long post but itll be interesting enough.
PRE WOW!
first mmo was shadowbane. need i say more. the game was highly addicting to me. it had me hooked from the beta. yes there were flaws, and bugs, and lag, and patches the changed the game for the worse, but all in all it was fun. nuthing like making a guild and building a city with your friends, and having them call you at 3 in the morning shouting " THERE IN OUR CITY! LETS ROLL THESE ROOKIES!" i didnt have a comp that could run the game well, so that meant i had to walk to the nearest internet cafe, which was about a mile away to go protect our city. sometimes they picked me up but most times i walked. no game since then has ever made my adrenaline flow like that game.
then next up was ffxi, and yes i am a FF addict! if i could, i would so have my way with tifa and celest and the rabbit chick from ff12! so naturally my and my friends grabed some copies and started playing. the game was beautiful. there was so much to do, awesome cutscenes. acting like an ass had major results as compared to other games. yes u could wait for 6 hours for a party invite and not get one. it has happened. but if your an asshole, then you might be waiting days lol. the game was just addicting. sooner or later u would want to take a break like i did. my break took to long so they deleted my characters and everything. i was very pissed. yet the game was so fun, i started all over again. it was very group orientated. there was no such thing as a 1 man party. unless your a bst.
when i got to wow, it was really really fun. i lvled my druid to 60. raided. did the pvp. then it started feeling like a job. raiding monday - friday at 6pm sharp. it got old really quick. since then, every mmo i have tried has either failed me, or didnt keep my interest. is it because the games dont live up to the high standards that my first mmo's had? or is it the games cater to the masses rather than the hardcore? maybe im just tired of mmo's?? i dont think its cause im tired of mmo's, because i still occasionaly play ffxi sometimes.
aoc failed me with the pvp and op classes and.... just bleh. so many faults to really enjoy.
i played the war beta and just felt wow all over again. no offence to mythic cause im sure they have a great game( to some people). it just felt bleh when i tried to play it.
so im asking you fellow mmo players, whats so different now with mmo's vs the classics? if you never played some of the classics, i would say befor wow, then u can just say what u like about the ones out now.

no 1 has any ideas?
I can follow what you are saying, but I personally don't think of any MMOs in a sense of comparing them to WoW, post, pre or current. I don't know why everyone has to compare, or consider it the turning point of an era, or whatever. I evaluate a game for what it is on it's own.
So I can't vote in the poll because there is not third option. I like new and old MMOs for what each delivers.
I played the SadowBane Beta. Great concept, but the execution sucked. I couldn't play it, just to buggy, and game design flaws, like grinding to build a city, and having it torn down to easily.
FF? Serious grinder, IMO.
WoW? To solo friendly. If you like to play an MMORPG solo, while you chat with other people, great, but that's not how I like to play. Of course you can raid at the end, but I'm not really into raiding either.
I liked EQ, EQ2, DAoC, and City of Heroes.
I tried Auto Assualt, it sucked. Played the Vanguard Beta, and it sucked.
I"m probably forgetting a few that came and went. I didn't play UO, and never tried SWG pre-NGE.
I'm currently playing WAR, and I think it's fun, although I couldn't stand WoW.
Everyone likes different things.
i can understand where your comming from, but i have to say there does feel like there is a difference. and the reason i use wow is because it seems to be the turning point in the way mmo's are made. ( at least alot of people feel this way, which is why i used wow)
They feel the same to you, why? Do you enjoy the journey of leveling? Is there something outsite of the flavor of the world that makes the game feel the same? What featuers would a game need for you to feel different?
Well, unfortunatley developers see Wow cashing in a lot of money and they all want a piece of the cake and therefore stealing as much as they can from wow. But there will be games not cloning wow, Spellborn and Guildwars 2... and some others so just relax, the clone wars will end eventually when someone makes a new great game... and it will start again with another game, that's how the market works.
Please try to be honest here. Most of what wow has taken from previous games. Don't try to lie like and expect to get away with it. I f---ing hate liars.
of course. i just wanted to know out of the mmo's people played, which era did they have more fun in. no need to give reasons, but reasons would be nice.

WTF are you talking about? Loke666 is 100% correct, can't even understand what you are blabbering about though.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Reread it, he is saying people are stealing wow's ideas and concepts, when the fact is that wow borrowed from previous games. Saying it is not true is a lie.

I read it as stealing as much players as they can from WoW, but perhaps he did mean ideas, where I would agree with you.

Hey Grafh
Why cry over boredom and not just try out all the games that are releasing. I am a great fan of Anarchy Online and it was the first mmo I ever played. After that I continued to look for games and I played many. Some of them even kept me going for a while but recently Atlantica Online somewhere makes me hooked.
As far as cloning goes, well they need to make a game and as such some portions will be similar to other games but not all. Do not know why but I really feel Atlantica online is going to be the next generation mmo. It now is in open-beta-waiting. I played the CBs and it is wonderfully addictive. Though the team gaming portion is lacking but I think they are working to get that thing going also.
Rappelz, Perfect World and a few others are evolving too and they do not ask for money to play. Jumpgate is going for beta and so also Stargates World. Darkfall is also going for beta. On the contrary to year 2007-2008 I am sure that year 2009 is going to show us quite a number of revolutionized mmo models.
You are correct WAR is so much like WOW and thus it gives nothing new to the hardcore players.
Cheers

its not that im crying over boredom, and to save time ive tried alot of the free games but dont want to list them. its like eating pizza from your favorite pizza joint for years, and one day the taste changes. your trying to figure out if your taste buds changed or if the pizza changed. afterwards every pizza you eat just doesnt live up to the pizza you remember. thats how i feel about mmo's right now. i am very excited about aion and darkfall, but those are a while away. trust me, almost every mmo i can get into the beta i try, just to see if its something i can sink my teeth into, aoc was like this until you left newbie island.
I've read all posts but would like to add my own contribution (may be off topic slighty but that depends on point of view)
First off i'd like to say that i'm a Pre-NGE SWG refugee, it was my first ever MMO, yes i arrived late in the MMO world, i spent 3 years in that game. It had everything i liked about MMORPG's, Complex Crafting, good resourse gathering system, FULLY player driven economy (you could buy basic items but they didn't amount to much, they were there if you forgot to get repaired or took too many deaths in one outing that your equipment failed), PvP was open world PvP but it was consensual, you had to flag yourself as wanting to PvP and also to un-flag yourself too, with countdown timers to stop abuse of the system. The gameplay, content and immersion of pre-NGE SWG is what companies SHOULD class as the standard. the game was hugely successful with upto and in excess of 100 players per city at pretty much any time. PvP fans had their open PvP whenever they wanted, PvE players weren't disturbed by the PvP (other than minor lag issues due to visuals or number of PvP'ers in an area), crafters had their slice by constantly trying to improve their wares and supplying the market with regular items and trying to compete with other crafters prices.
Modern games such as WoW, LotRo etc are boring me to death of the MMORPG genre, the best way to describe the crafting and economy of these games is in two words.. NON EXISTENT.. crafters are pretty much useless as they don't craft everything and what they do craft isn't anywhere near as good as raid loots, the so called economy of these games is also NON EXISTENT as all you'll see on the AH's is raid items being sold for massive amounts of money which can take weeks or more to make, any crafted items that are worth anything are also highly overpriced due to the greed of the players that craft because they spend so much time hunting for the rare materials or have to pay so much for them on the AH's.. Combat is similar in way to the classics like pre-NGE SWG so no point in mentioning that. The modern games also cater more towards the PvP players and Raiders than the PvE players and crafter/economy players which i might add are the ones that prefer complex systems and provide the main bulk for a games income. If the statements are actually true about WoW having 10m subscribers think how many it would have if they'd implimented complex crafting and fully player driven economy like pre-NGE SWG. Lastly i'd like to say that in all the games i've played since leaving SWG (because of the NGE) every single one of them apart from CoX has a really bad community, WoW ha sthe worst community i've ever encountered, you ask a simple question like "can someone please tell me wher eto find X" and the replies you get are "up ur ass" and "f**k off u noob" etc i also encountered this a few times during my 1 yr in LotRo, therfore through conclusion i have to surmise that modern MMORPG's are full of Immature wallies and breeds more of them each day.. I'm not saying that it's just one game that does this as i have no less than 6 CoD4 clan friends who play and enjoy WoW.
To Summerise i'd have to say that the difference in MMO's today compared to classics is that they are designed for the immature and mindless people who prefer to spend thier monthly subscription fee just to be abused, give abuse, raid for countless hours and PvP just so they can brag about "owning some poor noob".. Gameplay wise they are simplistic at best.
@any WoW players that try to flame that WoW is the standard and every MMO copied it etc etc etc i have this to say,, start using your brain and look things up. WoW wasn't the first MMORPG there ever was, as a matter of fact WoW actually copied from the original concept of the guy who created Dungeons and Dragons..
@the WoW players who will likely say that SWG came after WoW.. again i think do some research..
SWG released 15th April 2003 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Galaxies
WoW released 23rd November 2004 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Warcraft
the reason i added the above statement to the WoW players is actually aimed at those who posted/trolled the SWG forums just to cause hassle.

I get your point. Yep mmo genre is slowly shifting from party gaming to solo gaming and the uber loot of amours and weapons. Surely they give no fun at all. I miss Anarchy Online days too and the account that got blocked had 4 level 200 toons in it. I am surely not going to start over again. Age Of Conan was seriously too much of a junk for me. But then again not all the time that a company delivers good games. What are you trying out recently? I think I am gonna go for Stargates World if I get a chance or I will go for Atlantica Online.

If WoW wasn't made by Blizzard (World of.. something else) I bet it wouldn't be anywhere near as popular as it is right now.
I am still amazed why is crafting not becoming experience and level dependent? I would surely like to see that there is a level of crafting and the higher it is the more better stuff with better stats you can make. Also it should be level dependent, so as the higher level players can craft awesome lower level stuff and the level of crafting should allow occasional bonus on a random stuff which will include raid boss stuffs.
You are right on that part about community of City Of Heroes. It is really a wonderful community and it is more of a gaming community rather than a cut throat competitive community of chat abusers and kids trying to make a point.
I am hoping Aion will have a good game-play and a very good community to make the experience wonderful. But every time we hardcore players wait we need to spend some time with the ordinary games launched in the F2P segment and it wears us out somehow.

i also forgot to mention that i have really high hopes for KOTOR mmo and the new SE mmo called RAPTURE! although im sure they wont be out for years
yes, why you compare different games with the same one? it's different! better or worse, this is its speciality, if you think some game is the best. why do you try others? all of us should know some many games..they are different! just enjoy everyone.
