Finally, a game that supports Perma-death!

MajesticoMajestico Member UncommonPosts: 481

Like most players here, I have been clamouring out for a tougher gaming experience.

By tough, I do not mean ridiculous timesink, or having to grind out the best gear.  In this day and age, of games that guide you by the hand, those (as well as raiding which requires more timesink and organisation) are what equates to a skillful player.

Therefore, for a long time now, many of us have been looking for a game that does not molly-coddle you.  A game that punishes you, without some silly respawn point whch gives you a tiny penalty for a couple of minutes.

Sure, the bulk of players don't want harsh penalties.  But what about those of us who are in search of a true challenge?

Well Dufus has finally announced a perma-death server on 26th september.

It may not be the greatest game.  But it is free2play, and a lot better than the standard crud out there.

If you can bear the cutesy style, then this might be the start of the 'hardcore' revoloution.

http://www.dofus.com/en/mmorpg-game/heroic-server.html

Let me know what you think.

umm i dont support perma-death but isnt this almost the same for all games when you take out the scenery and mentality?

Anyone who wants a perma death game is delusional.  Net is not stable enough for such an animal.

Any company who implements such will truely regret it, customer service will spend eons on petitions on deaths from disconnects, lagging, etc.  So the dufuses over at Dofus will surely regret their decisions.

Shaiya has had perma-death for hardcore mode players since day one on all servers so Dufus is not the first to do this. I'm glad you did finally find a game you like though. Have fun re-rolling a lot.

No, it's not the same.  In normal games, once I finish a quest, I never repeat it.

And by the way, all games support permadeath.  All you have to do is reroll when you die.

It's good that there is finally a place where self-flagelating fools can go and do their thing without annoying the rest of us who are not so inclined.

CH, Jedi, Commando, Smuggler, BH, Scout, Doctor, Chef, BE...yeah, lots of SWG time invested.

What do you think EVE/CCP does when someone petitions them to replace their ship that someone worked months to attain? How is this going to be any different....

Yeah right you're still killing brain dead mobs over and over. The only way you could convince me you are not grindin' is:

    * You do not play MMOs or you only play Guild Wars or you play EVE + know how to make ISK via trading or GTC

I can't prove anything, but I'm 100% sure that most players agree with both you, Sgt, and me:

    Perma-death = NO THANKS!

I like risk and harsh and death penalties but permadeath runs counter to the very reason anyone would ever want to play an MMO in the first place (having a persistent character in a persistent world).

I really wonder why some people still think that punishing the player makes the game more difficult.

It doesn't, it only increases the timesink. Losing 10% of your XP or your entire character does not make the mob that killed you any more or less powerful. It just means you have to spend more time getting your character back up.

Permadeath is a fucking stupid idea that isn't fun.

  • Bill_PardyBill_Pardy Member Posts: 196

I love the warm fuzzy feelings i get when reading these forums.... like a small dose of radiation poisoning.

Not everybody plays MMO's for the same reason. Some want to get uber loot and advance their characters, some want a graphical chatroom, some want to play an exciting and challenging game and get that from a permadeath environment (I'm not saying the other groups are not having fun or being challenged). I'm pretty sure anybody that enjoys playing permadeath thinks of it as fun not punishment, otherwise they wouldn't be playling it  (you never know with the MMO crowd though )

I do have to agree with the corrections to the 'most players' part though

most of the people that don't like permadeath don't really understand the whole point of it.

permadeath isn't meant to be the "hardcore gamers" way of proving they can pvp all day long and never die. even the best pvpers will die eventually, which is why most people say that PD is stupid.

the purpose of PD is to unite the community. at first, there will be some chaos, but the eventually 3 types of players will emerge:

    1) the players who get annoyed at having to restart several times per day. they'll quite after a few re-rolls (this is the largest group).

    2) the players who are actually so good at pvp and are careful enough that they don't have to reroll their players constantly (there won't be many of these).

    3) the players who actually know what PD is truly meant for, who are just waiting for group 1 players to leave so they can begin to enjoy the PD server.

once group 1 is pretty much gone, the 3's and 2's will being turn from pvp to diplomacy (some find diplomatic negotiations as fun as pvp). the community will huddle closely together, in order to protect one another from the few PK's who are good enough and smart enough to stay alive. rather than wage senseless wars, clans will only engage in battle over imporant reasons. what happens is, although you reduce the quantity of pvp, you increase the quality of it. no more battles where one side zergs the other, dies, rezzes, runs back, ... repeats ... and finally they say "alright, i'm bored, let's stop now." instead, you have battles where losing men actually means something.

eventually, some of the folks from group 1 may check out the PD server again and find people are acting civil towards one another, and the mass chaos and bloodshed that they saw in the beginning has mostly subsided (except for those few PK's who manage to keep away from the community and attack only those foolish enough to stray to far from home). so, some 1's might decide to settle down and join the community.

PD servers aren't for the "hardcore gamers." in fact, they're more for the carebear gamers that are into socializing, community building, and diplomacy, as opposed to the players who want to zerg, destroy, rez, repeat...

this doesn't mean that things would actually turn out this way, it's just one possibility. but this is the theory behind PD, and this is what most of the supporters of PD have in mind, not the endless rerolls and senseless bloodshed that most people instantly think when they hear the words "permadeath."

The problem has been solved since Diablo II. No customer service whatsoever or any other kind of recourse for character death. Unfair permadeath is just part of opting into hardcore mode and there is no discussion.

Considering the number of games out there offering countless flavors of easy & painless resurrection, it's amusing to see people so passionate about rejecting permadeath poking its tiny head out, even from games no one plays and which offer conventional death as well.

Aren't you guys being a little pathological about this? You're not invested in it one bit, but it pisses you off anyway.

Hellgate London has a perma-death mode which I quite enjoy.  Nobody uses it for pvp though.  It's all about thoughtful, "realistic" pve.  An unofficial forum poll suggests that something like 10 to 15% of the players go for the perma-death mode.  Unfortunately it is only available to subscribers and no new subscriptions are being accepted.

I tried Dofus back when I first heard about their perma-death server.  I can't think of a single nice thing to say about Dofus.  At least it's free so you can try it and judge for yourself.

Magic of the Gods has perma-death. I mean, you can be resurrected if the gods themselves intervene, but I don't know of any other way. They have a strange life after death where you can keep playing in the land of the dead, but I don't know any way to get back to the land of the living without divine intervention.

    Games played:

Magic of the Gods ------ www.magicofthegods.com
    Saga of Ryzom ---------- www.ryzom.com
    World of Warcraft ------- www.worldofwarcraft.com

Very well put. I support the notion.

However, perma-death would not be the only thing that attracts me to a game. There should be a well structured sandbox design in the game that goes hand in hand with the perma-death mentality.

    Thanks for the good post.

That's different.  Raids are challenging and fun, precisely because they are usually difficult and require many attempts to get it right.,  When they cease to be so, I stop doing them.

Repeating the same kill x quests is not fun.  It is not challenging.  Permadeath simply encourages players to take on easy content.

The last thing I need is 4 months of grinding per PVP battle or challenging PVE fight.

It might work in a sandbox game with tons of non-combat content, and a dedicated PD server, just as an earlier poster said.   A flatter leveling curve wouldn't hurt either.

Just imagine such a server in WoW, where the highest level player is level 24.

Permadeath in Wow (from what little I know about the game) probably would not be much fun, but we are not talking about WoW.

  • ASmith84ASmith84 Member Posts: 979

permadeath is for people who want to take games too seriously.  If you want to take it that seriously, why not go outside and play real life?i dont see why some people wont have fun till they have to create a new guy each time or whatever. its just a game have fun if you really want it each time you die just create a new guy and let everyone else keep going.
