So here's my experience on the battle royale server. I'm still pretty new to the game, but I learn quickly. I start playing on the server, get a couple colonies going, one desert and one paradise. Myself and the corp I joined place MANY turrets on the paradise planet. I log out and back in the next day. Of course the colony has been captured like twice, regardless of turrets.
Bullets should not bounce off walls! People sit around a corner and kill turrets.
This has all happened on like day 1 of the game.
Then a guy that has the IG ship and graviton beam sets up 1 jump from sol, cuz for some reason it's not UN space. He has about 10-15 turrets ALL PLACED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER (a bug/flaw/exploit in my opinion) and uses those, his $5 ship, and the gravitron to grief anyone who goes that way. Now I can't really fault him, since the game is designed that way, but wow how shitty for everyone that doesn't have the $5 super ship. I'm all for PvP, I've been very active in PvP in every MMORPG i've played for the last 8 years or so, but this is just stupid. If you guys need money, then charge a monthly fee, don't give an unfair advantage to some people. Oh and on the subject of a monthly fee, it would sure eliminate a lot of the moron griefers that play this game. At least that's been my experience with free MMORPG's, as long as they are free they draw the "white trash" gamers...
I got a friend of mine all excited to try this game, but the other day I told him don't even bother. Not until things like this are balanced out.

i think you beat your own logic when you said you were still new to the game.
with full shield's i can avoid those 15 turret's even if they are as close as possible to the warp tunnel and grav beam doesnt reduce your 8K+ shield's to dust in under 1 minute, zerok tried on me he never killed me with his ship or space turrets, a litle delay before you can get IG would be nice though because its impossible to pvp one 5 minute's after the server startet.
toonces said he might be adding bouncing turret's (bullet's wich bounce) im not sure how this is going to work but i hope those turret's will be smart enough to use wall's to hit their target's if they cant hit them directly. untill then its plain stupid/ignorant to try and keep a paradise planet if you'r not going to camp it untill it has a solar cannon. in any case a solar cannon +turret's is almost always neceserry to defend a planet unless you can have 20+ turret's firing at the drop off point, from all directions.
many people cant pay a monthly fee so the game is free but the developer's need to eat so you have to pay for some thing's, and we cant let people pay for just litle thing's because those wont be bought but also larger thing's.
the game is still being developed (and apparantly pretty fast tx to toonces (and others) and user feedback)
i hope you understand the game and its people better now.

personally i dislike IG ship's because they make colony invasion so easy and because they can be used very early (unlike sethder and starcruiser). i usually get a merchant freighter do some trade runs untill i get the galaxy whale and start trading again untill i can convert 500 spice and then untill i have full cargo capacity then i get a biodome and put it down on a planet i want (usually an arctic/volcano) planet ferry it full of people (160 cargo is good for me at this point) and forget about it untill it has refinary meanwhile i do some trade route's and eventually start a second colony. at this stage.
i usually save some fuel so i can use it later.

Here's a newb idea...
Why not just let turrets fire OVER walls? Or make a type of Tower Turret that can fire over them but is slower to fire or more costly?
I'm sure people that can make spaceships can put turrets on sticks at least
A turret that has a longer range and shoots over walls is called a Solar Cannon.
I don't agree with the no puchasing of anything over $500k time limit. PvP at that early stage of the game is very unrewarding as noone has much exp anyways. I've never had a problem.. if someone chases me, then I just hide for a little while..
Placement of your biodome and defences is paramount. When you learn this, Xira, you will no longer whine about attacking vs defending being unbalanced.
zzzzzt....Tempernaut, I know everything there is to know about placement of biodome/defenses.
I could take over any colony I could build. I have taken over fully defended colonies easily many times.
At the higher end of the game, elite versus colony, the elite always wins with no chance of death. You just have to learn to play safe and not take chances versus a bunch of fixed turrets.
Here I'll make you a deal. You set up a colony then give me 10 million credits. I will come in and take that colony. Any server(except Pax) any time. You can even watch if you like. I am not saying it won't take me an hour, or cost a few mil credits, but it can be done and done easily.
As the game stands the best colony structure is that one smallish planet type with a single 3 turret wide exit from the drop zone. The best defense you can add is to stack turrets 10-15 deep all across that one exit backed up by a solar cannon colony placed just barely inside max range of the edge of the drop point itself(about in the middle of the map) away from the wall by 1 square.. Then you ring the biodome with turrets.
That is the best colony, and it's not good enough to stop me.
From what i know of solar canons i didn't mean something like them....
I meant like 2x priced "Tower Turrets" that would have 1/2 range but could be used to protect against people firing from behind corners but as they have less range and cost more wouldn't be used otherwise to prevent twinking.
Another idea i had was to allow colony based fleets, not of spaceships but of smaller planet-bound ones, that are weaker ( attack wise ) but smaller and faster to make it harder to take over a base just by flying in and stratigically blowing up turrets.
I'm not suggesting that an elite, such as yourself Xira, is incapable of taking a colony, no matter how well defended it is. I believe that this is a good aspect of the game, as reiterated by others in other threads on this board. To enable players to make a colony invunerable to even the most seasoned player would be in my opinion silly.
However, it is possible to set up colonial defences in order to deter 99% of players that choose to have a go at invading, and that's the point of defending a colony to the maximum number of turrets/mines permissable. Even landing, firing off a few shots, and then exiting will incur probably atleast a few thousand points of damage from a well defended door. Remember that when you land you start with 0 energy, so you have to wait in order to start firing, and shortly after you are bombarded with perhaps 15-20 turrets, which also deplete your energy. All this time, through many many landings, you are spending millions of creds on shields and risking that one small human error miss-shoot of the warp back out of the planet may cost you hundreds of thousands of experience if you are one of the game leaders and you have to ask, is it worth it? And that is where the colony defences become inpenetrable to a player... not because it is actually physically impossible.
Unfortunately I do not have $10M spare for you to try your hand at an invasion, but if you have a spare 10 minutes, have a look at Alpha Ursae Majoris II (705,630) on the current Milky Way game to see what I mean. It'll be there for a few days yet.

Oh, and the Tower Turrets or whatever.. yea, i like it actually.. Would be a consideration to people who use the grav to shoot thru walls and people who hide round corners using missiles.
