Did i miss something, no cpu?
Im guessing AMD 64 3000- 3400 ?
Doh, I skipped right over the processor.
Yeah, it is a AMD Athlon 64 3700+
Well, im am the owner of AMD 64 3200, K8V 1 gig ram blah, blah...
As far as i can tell AMD will not be producing any more CPU's with 754 pins past the 3700. I have not read this but it just seems to make sence because the 3800's are out and they use the 939 pin setup.
This is all fine and dandy, the 3700 will be smoking fast but you will not be able to upgrade the cpu without getting a new mobo. Mobo's are cheap and CPUS are not. I dunno if you plan to upgrade or what, but its just a thought.
Whats the difference between a 3700 and a 3800 you say, only 100 mhz right... Well the reason im looking to the 3800 is not the for CPU, but for the mobo. It has duel Channel DDR 400. I have the mother board that you listed in you thread, and it pisses me off to no end that blasted single channel DDR.
The 939 motherboard is called the A8V and is expandable to include the some FX series cpus (so it says). It runs at $143 compaired with the K8V at $113. The 3800 CPU Keep in mind will cost $125 more then the 3700. I built my system myself and if the parts had not been so expensive when I did, i would have gone with the Duel ddr in a snap.
Now here comes the really crappy part. You asked about compatablity. If you run windows xp you will be fine, but you will not be using any of your new systems 64 bit features, as far as i can tell. If you choose to install Windows 64 beta (like I did), be prepared. None of the drivers that were shiped with the motherboard will be win64 compatable. In fact none of the drivers that you have for any of your hardware will work. You will have to find all new stuff, but it is there. 100% of my drivers are beta. And the best part is im also 100% stable. I ran this system playing games ect. for over two weeks before I rebooted. But unless you have some idea of what you are getting into with win64 stay away. Also i dont think that it runs games really good just yet. Im mostly talking about games that require openGL, and getting these games to run at all was a pretty huge pain.
OH Waitttttt!!!!!
The memory that you have chosen is not listed as compatable in the motherboard manuel.
Before I bought the motherboard i was reading about alot of people who were haveing memory compatablity problems. Lot of them. I made sure to get Ifineon RAM because it seemed to be the most compatable. They actaully have model and chip numbers listed so i think it may be critical to get one that is supported. Most of the major brands are listed in there but corsair is not.
It says at the bottom of the page to check www.asus.com for the latest DDR 400 qualified Vendor list for this motherboard
....
Ok i went and looked, there is only one corsair chip listed and its 256.. Unless you can find somone that has found there corsair ram to be compatable, and can get the exact model number, i wouldent go near it.
Well that sucks about the RAM.
Ok, well thanks for telling me but now I want to point out something about the 939 pin mother boards. The only way I would get that is if I got the FX-53, and that is way over priced. Why you ask? The 3800+ is only 512k of L2 Cache, the 3700+ is 1mb of L2 Cache. There is a difference. The FX-53 is the only 939-pin processor with 1mb of L2 Cache. Too bad it is so incredibly overpriced.
By the way, there is no form of Corsair XMS ram that works with the mother board? What about Kingston HyperX. Those are the only two kinds of memory I will use...
If anyone can link me to nice Corsair XMS RAM or Kingston HyperX RAM that works with this motherboard it would be great.

I am actually looking at the 939 pin 3500+ processor... but I am still not sure about that whole L2 cache deal.
Also, I really need that answer for the memory. Need to know what will work with that motherboard (the one in the previous post I made).

[b]The 3700+ is not the end of the lined for the 754 pin. It is the new home for the amd semperon cpus. Anyway, go with the 3400+ overclock it to 2.4, you save lots of cash. The really isnt a big performance difference between 754 and 939. The upgradable issue is dumb, when you upgrade to a new cpu, I doubt you want to use a non-pci e board(only ones out for amd64) you have now. Oooo, 100 dollars more(cpu is the big cost), no big deal.

So you want to reccomend the 3400 at $295 because you can save cash, but then you say $100 is no big deal in refence to a $643 dollar chip? sorry that dossent make sence. Your right, no big difference between 754 and 939, only 2x the memory bandwidth, whatever... The upgrade issue is dumb..... Not really if your like me and consistanly upgrade your system when the price drops. Overclock?? why get an K8V to overclock, it dossent have AGP or PCI lock. I guess if you like small or unstable overclocks. Ive tride, i couldent get the stablity that i like with it.
Drakaeon: I dont know about the 3500, infact ive never even heard of it. Go with the 1024kb L2 cache on whatever chip you chooes. Although with that said the benchmarks on the newcastle are almost the same as the clawhammer 3200 and the newcastle has 512kb with a higher clock speed.
Check that website www.asus.com it has lists of all the compatable ram for their boards. And use tomshardware.com its your friend

According to the chart on the bottom of the page, none of the Kingston or Corsair RAM I could find on Newegg works with it. I searched every one of those models. Nothing.
Maybe someone here can double check. I searched twice but it can't hurt.
Well I dont know where you live, but if there is a supplier for memory near you house you cuould try there. You will no doubt may pay more, but you can get the ram you want and if it dossent work, you can return it for some stuff that will. You might also want to check some other forums to see if anyone has tried the ram you wanted.
