Whether or not a game is a "grind" is very much up to the player.

Ayase who is the cm for Aion said that to get to level cap would take a little longer than WoW.

Now, from my experience that is not a grind. At all. Others might disagree.

There were people who felt that getting to lvl 20 in Guild wars was a grind and others "not so much".

But people have to realize that in no way is NC soft saying that this is revolutionary new gameplay that will completely erradicate grind.

This is a traditional mmo in the spirit of WoW, LOTRO, CoX with a Asian art design and more pvp thrown in in certain areas.

So given that people need to make up their own minds.

Indeed, 'grind' is very much up to the player. However, 'grind' can be anything. Not just 'leveling to level cap'. Gear grind, crafting grind, reputation grind...There are so many things that could turn into grind than just 'levels'. Going to level 20 in Guildwars was something I didn't consider grind. However, the skill, runes and waepon mod unlock grind was horrid (before the Balthazar Faction points and the unlock packs in the online shop came).

But thanks for clearing up that it's going to be a traditional MMO.

I read every post on this thread and seems like most people that dont like this game seem to not like the Korean Art Style of graphics. If the games look does not appeal to you then thats fine but dont say the game sucks because of the way it looks. I love the Korean Art Style and cant wait to play AION. I have played all major MMOs on the market and Lineage 2 is the only game that I would play and just run to a certain area just to look around and adore the graphics. I also sometimes just stop and spin the screen around my character just looking at him thinking how cool he looks.  I have tried WoW about 10 times and everytime the thing that turns me off is the way the game looks. I just dont like the Art Style that the game has but I will not be a hater and say the game sucks because of it because it does not. It just does not appeal to me.

People keep saying that nobody knows if the game will be a Korean Grinder or not so does that give you reason to say it is? If you are asking for proof of it not being a Korean Grinder than show us proof of it being a Korean Grinder. I always say that everything is not for everybody and people need to understand that.

Oh yes, it is definitely a traditional mmo. the devs even said that people should not expect a reinvention of the wheel.

It will incorporate traditonal mmo conventioins with a few things that they hope will give it some difference (such as the stigma system).

I tend to agree with you!

But for me it's all the flashing particles that apear when you simply swing your wep or cast a spell that just bugs me!

I think the asian art style is fine when talking about female characters but I hate the look of the males... So for me some is good some is bad but all in all I have to pass...

Definitely I'm always swiging the camera around to admire my character lol.

Few points: Tradional MMOs ARE grinders by nature. It's the new generation that have redifined it and no Asia did not invent grind, they just perfected it, like everything else.

PR people are not really the ones saying Aion is not a grinder, all they've said is that they are trying to make Aion closer to newer standards of leveling progression and they have used WoW as an example so we can wrap our meager heads around the concept. However reports validating this have come from beta testers, unless they are lying of course and employees of NCsoft. *chuckles*

Not saying Aion is the messiah of MMOs, but many people are just sweeping it aside and putting it in a category where it doesn't really belong, just based on graphics.

    Game looks..ok..

For me it looks like Linage+warhammer+random other asian particle style. upclose those games (incl warhammer) always look great, but zoom out as you play and it looks like every mmo out there.

there only a few games like AoC that realy have great grapics for there time upclose and far away and those games are as we know under heavy instance.

about the grind., let us please not forget its a NCsoft game, NCsoft=grind. its always bin there way to keep people in the games. going to fast..oki lets uperdi the xp need.

This game will be gind, never at start ,always halfway to end.

But im defently gona try it out. just like I tried out every other mmo in history. probaly leave it afther a while again but who knows..it may suprice me..

If I was NCSoft, this is how I would want my English-speaking audiance to feel, in all honesty.

Mega-hyped game that sells millions of boxes, has a faily low conversion rate, stabalizes at a few hundred thousand subs - miserable, horrible, total, and utter failure.

Not-so-hyped game that sells a few hundred thousand boxes, has a fairly high converssion rate, stabalizes at the same few hundred thousand subs as above - only now it's a successful game that's found it's 'niche', particularly if it's the kind of MMO that WoW gamers tend not to like.

I like Aion - it seems to be a nice, pretty, old-school MMO.  Will it catch on?  Maybe - I'll still try it, and even stay if I like it.  Of course, it's no replacement for Eve but I can afford to sub to two games at once.

I still think WoW is teetering on an invisible precipice - every time a new MMO (especially a big-name MMO) comes out a bunch of people leave, try it, come back, tell everyone how much it sucks, and that's pretty much the end.  When most of those people *don't* come back is when things will get interesting.

You're absolutely correct.  Every WoW player I know has tried another game or two in his time.

The fact is they've all failed to beat WoW.  Aion has the potential to actually take it on.  Long development cycle, solid company, huuuuuuge budget, etc.

P.S.  No one in beta is saying its grindy.  They're saying it's a slightly tougher than WoW leveling curve, with quests that are now pretty much sufficient to get you to max level, and PvP experience (so you can level doing PvP, if you so decide).

Well, the devs can say anything they want, I wont beleive it till I read the reviews of  the released game, not beta. I'm tired of empty promises.

For example, take WAR; it was supposed to be "no grind!" open world PVP, war is everywhere...and thats what the beta tester said too. The beta was fun apparently. But right before release, Mythic increased the ammount of XP needed to lvl up. The result? In the released game, everyone is only GRINDING scenarios and the open RVR is dead.

Boring game, its WoW battleground grind all over again, even if on paper the game was great (By the way, I have nothing against wow... WAR was marketed as something different. It WASNT supposed to be wow 2.0, but IT IS. Except with more bugs. And slower gameplay). The WAR beta was great too. But one stupid retarded change from the devs and this is the result. Also, did you follow AoC? Empty promises, again. (But you know what, even when playing open beta, we had no way of finding how broken the game was)

I followed both games, and I had hope that the devs wouldnt lie. Both games were disapointing. Now you may say ncsoft is different... but now one knows, sadly. From my experience, its all about money and selling the most copies. And how do you do that? Either you make a great game (thats what we hope) or either you hype and hype and hype a bad game and hope players rush to buy it when its released (thats what we dont want, but this is getting more and more popular these days with new MMOs.)

So... thats why AION will be a grindfest. But I would love to be wrong.

I'm not interested in yet another mmo that uses the words "lots of quests" and "end game content" as its selling points. Its just a standard feature of all mainstream mmos so its hardly something to get excited about. I'm sure in Korea it will rock their worlds because they will be able to grind in a slightly different way.......it will still be a grind-fest though but just not quite so blatant as all of their other dreary games. To them it might be something new but over here we have all seen it before.

One thing to consider, game is filled with quests, shapeshifting, escort, pvp and obviously some combat introductory quests, there are 2 kind of quests, like in AoC, one of them is about the main storyline, and the other kind are different stories.

There is party based quests, named elite, which will require people to group. There will be people grinding, some like it more, some think that the group dynamics on this game are entertaining enough, anyways, it was estimated that the level cap would be reached within 250 hours more or less considering the experiences of beta testers, that seems reasonable to me, some people will be 50 before the free month passes.

I've got to test the game, the combat is entertaining and doesn't get old, the group dynamics are fun and the party combos get people active while playing, the quests I got to test were also gorgeous, escorting a guy to his boat, shapeshifting into a parrot to spy, some are also about killing mobs, but for example, there's a quest that is about slaying dragons, then, once you're done, you see 2 little creatures using those dragons backs to get together, so it's about convincing the dragons to help them, cutscenes also play an important role in the grind feel to me.

The fact Koreans made this game proves it's a grinder.  They can't make anything but grindgames.  Watch, at the beginning levels you'll level real fast, then maybe around lvl 20 or so it will start to get much slower, than eventually it'll take forever just to level.   All their games are like this.  All this "tons of quests" stuff means jack, how many f2p games have the same advertisements "This game has tons of quests!" only to find out the quests barely give much exp after a while and are just plain boring as hell.

Just stick to WoW, Aion WILL be a typical crappy Korean grindfest full of chinese gold farmers.  Lineage 2 is pay to play and they had massive problems with farmers, so expect the same.

If it ain't WoW, it ain't worth playin'

So are you ignoring the fact that some people reached level 40 within 18 days of limited gameplay during the closed beta?

Are you ignoring that every single beta tester review states that the game is filled with interesting quests and lots of content?

WoW has massive problems with chinese farmers, that's a plague that western players feed by buying their services, has nothing to do with the game.

eh also...WoW has problems with gold farmers aswell, every mmo has had a problem with gold farmers.

lineage 2 had more of a problem with people botting(levelling) than gold farmers.. do you actually know anything.

    Aion has nothing promising...

    • Levels? Check
    • PvE Based? Check
    • Instancing? Check
    • Grind? Check
    • Anime Graphics? Check
    • Made in Korea? Check
    • Not at all innovative? Check

Sounds like the other korean grinders to me.

    Levels? Check indeed
PvE Based? Check it has PvE content, Raids, quests, and crafting, it is PvP focused, however, this game is about the WAR between Elyos and Asmodians, so there is war.

Instancing? Check Most of its content is based on a seamless world, including raid bosses. There is minor instanced content for quest cutscenes.
Grind? Check You can grind on every game.
Anime Graphics? Check Maginobi is Anime.
Made in Korea? Check Prejudice? Check.
Not at all innovative? Check Which game is innovative?

Sounds like the other korean grinders to me.
Sounds like an undocummented fella to me.
