Want a taste of Darkfalls community? Give Shadowbane a try!

ArckenArcken Member Posts: 2,431

It occured to me today that one thing that hasnt been touched upon a whole lot in all of these discussions about Darkfall is the type of community that youll be a part of.

As a ffa, full loot pvp game, this game will cater to a specific crowd of people who are possibly the most detested part of the whole MMO community in general. This game is going to be about ganking, and what guild has the most numbers.

Solo players will find themselves getting killed and their gear looted relentlessly, small guilds will be a the mercy of the far larger guilds, and nothing about it will be "fair".

Trust me, it will be a bloodbath, and while Im looking forward to the carnage, I dont think most fans of Darkfall are prepared for the type of people theyll be playing with.

This is where I see it being a lot like Shadowbane. In Shadowbane, the larger guilds dominate, and small guilds step lightly, and do not run their mouths lest they lose all the time and money they invested in building their cities. You do not go out solo and try to farm money, because most likely youll be ganked, and your money and loot taken from you. You have to rely on numbers for safety, and sometimes not even that is enough if they happen to be playing a specific spec'd toon.

So I challenge anyone who is a fan of Darkfall to go spend a couple of months in Shadowbane, I think it will not only be a learning experience on how down and dirty Darkfall is going to be, but it will also prepare you for just how cutthroat FFA full loot really is.

Cool, so that means if I run into another guy in Darkfall and we get in a fight.  If my sword skill is 10 and his sword skill is 100 I have nothing at all to worry about.  As there are no levels, we should be completely even in our fight.

Certainly, its a game about numerical advantage, theres no "fairness" about it.

You'll be smashed by superior numbers, and theres no such thing as a fair fight, itll be dirty fighting and lots of people will be put off by it. Most people arent prepared to play a game like this after years of games like WoW.

The biggest guilds will call the shots, and if you run your mouth and are a smaller guild, you will lose your city. Its literally survival of the fittest. And the fittest is defined as he who has the most numbers.

I'm not a hardcore ganker or pvp'r and i've been playing Shadowbane for 6 years now.  Sadly, i think people become so disheartened after just a few deaths, they give up and leave Shadowbane without finding out how addictive the risk/reward of your actions really is.

I really hope the Darkfall Devs ignore the softcore players and keep the game the way it has been described.  Not every game has to appeal to everyone.  There are enough softcore mmos..we dont need another.

The problem is, you wont come across 1v1 fights, if you do go out by yourself, youll be decimated by groups of people, if not multiple groups of people. There isnt going to be any sense of "fighting fair"

Anda gain, if you "throw it back at them" they will come kill you and your guild, and take your city with superior numbers. Again, a lot of people are going to learn the hard way that if you run your mouth to a larger guild, you are in trouble.

How is it not fair?  There is nothing to stop anyone from creating a numerical advantage of their own.

I don't think you give the gaming public enough credit.

Most people do not only play WoW and know very well what competitive gaming is all about.

dont run your mouth to a larger guild unless you cna back it up O_O and i dont play FFA pvp with levels its stupid tcos is goign to have a server with open pvp but the levels arent going to matter as much. but there still going to need a rule set

No worries Arcken, wasn't really my point.  Was just going for a poor attempt at levels are levels by any name.  There is always a mechanic that will measure one versus another in some way.  Just have to love how they pick one tiny thing from a bunch of text and use it to invalidate an argument or a point that is raised.  "Well, Darkfall doesn't have green M&M's, so you can't bring up the community of game X+Y=Z.  Even though the feature set is nearly identical in other areas.  No, no, no...you fail"

I am just curious if anyone will be able to transport a city to the bottom of the ocean and wipe out a whole load of characters.  By accident of course.

Trust me if youve played Shadowbane for 6 years, you are indeed a hardcore PvP'r. There just arent any other games out there that offer the gritty survival of the fittest ffa pvp. People will be in for a shock, but like you said Im not sure they wont try and cater to the softcore group.

How it happens in shadowbane is there are generally 3 to 5 nations on a server that rule it. You cant simply "Go shopping" for more numbers, the truly excellent players are already spoken for. A weak guild recruits randomly to try and up its numbers. The truly excellent ones are hard to get into.

This is where it moves into politics, sometimes guilds reform or ally, but a small guild isnt going to just magically get a ton of people together. It just doesnt happen. You are either one of the top 3, or you are a small fish who keeps your head down and your mouth shut in hopes that they dont decide to come take your city by force.

Honestly, i think if they do, Darkfall is doomed.

At least now they will be one of a kind.  If they "dumb it down" for the general populace, they will lose their individuality and no one will like it.

I guess we will find out........at some point.

This thread has nothing to do with the mechanics of either game. Its about the community you'll be dealing with. And as Ive said, I dont think most of the Darkfall fans are prepared. Which again, is why Ive said go try Shadowbane, whether you like the mechanics or not, the communities will be similiar if not exactly the same.

Shadowbane was awesome... especially after it became free.

    Above poster: love your sig

*EDIT* well there were like 4 posts in the time it took me to write this one... was referring to the horse beating.

The ultimate solution to every problem: more space marines.

Ummm, so your whole point is that you are HOPING....And that will let you ignore all the other comparisons being made by two games that should attract a smilar clientele due to similar gameplay.  I happen to think Arcken is pretty on the money for the most part.  But I am not HOPING, just waiting to see what it releases like and then can play or not.

I thought Id throw a link out there to the Shadowbane forums, this is the political forum for the server Thurin which my guild Mad Mercs is on. Its a taste of the same type of attitudes and behavior you can expect from people playing Darkfall.

What were looking at is comparing 2 ffa pvp centric games. Shadowbane imo is the closest comparison I think that there is out there to what Darkfall is trying to be. I have no doubt in my mind that the communities will be the same.

DF fans know how the the community will be and exactly what it will be like and exactly what they are getting into, we have seen 10+ years of it already , the only people who wont know what they are getting into are the ones who  have never played a open pvp game , and they will only be a small part of the population. Also it doesnt take a game like uo/sb to show you how big an asshole most of the people in the world can be , they are in every game and just as bad as they are in pvp games ,the only differance is  pvp games just have more of them.

    Seriously though....this is right.

The whole "omg its just a numbers game" shows ignorance.  Yes there is strength in numbers, nothing new there, but its hardly what this game will be all about.  It happens in WAR too btw....numbers in open RVR take all.

Ever play EVE?  Same ffa pvp...community is fine.  It has its extreme jerks as well, but hardly the majority.

The idea of full loot pvp will curb the extent to which the jerks can grief though....unlike in other mmos where game mechanic protects jerks.
