AION sets Record in Korea on Day 1 of Open Beta!

MikehaMikeha Member EpicPosts: 9,196

Aion's Korean open beta is now boasting concurrent user numbers of 150,000.

Since launching the service at 6am on the 11th, 150,000 players managed their way into Atreia by 11pm the same day. Aion is now operating with a total of 25 servers, with each server exceeding the 5000 player target NCsoft had set out for their servers.

Upon login, players are finding most servers on the list marked as 'full'. Taking into account all the users in queue for the servers, the number of concurrent users could possibly be seen as closer to 200,000. Considering that the launch was done on a weekday, the numbers are expected to go up as many more attempt to join over the weekend.

(ETnews reports that this is a record for a Korean developed MMO opening in Korea. The past record holders have been Lineage2 and Ragnarok 2 but even they were only able to reach 100k after a month of open beta testing. No mention of how WoW did in comparison, but WoW had over 150k concurrent users at its peak during its Korean open beta according to an interview with Mike Morhaine.)

NCsoft is now dealing with the happy dilemma of handling a much greater level of interest than they'd anticipated. Having already added 7 more servers than originally planned, continuing to add to that pool is only one way of handling the situation. The first change implemented immediately was to cut down on the scale of the promotions that were planned to begin on the 13th. This decision was made so that Aion's user base grew in increments that they could actually handle.

Unsurprisingly, many players are venting their frustration at the situation. Players that used the pre-beta services to reserve their spots had it easier, but those that didn't were having to wait in long queues just to create their characters. (note: Many of these players were sitting in netcafes as well, so you can imagine the added pressure.)

Haha... they have to slow down promotion so it doesn't get out of hand.

I always knew Aion would do well

Aion is going to do great in Asia....its the western market I would be wondering about. MMOs still are not very popular here compared to Asia.

And to the OP where is the link to this news you bring us? For all we know this could be a fake......or just viral marketing ......its open beta the hype will die down..... people play open beta to try the game to see if they like it and usually balances out in 3-6 months after release.. to most of us this game wont even hit our radar.. from everything Ive read this wont be the type of game I really want to play seems just like everything else thats been released in the last 4 yrs just with flashy graphics and angels...

What does that have to do with anything I wrote?

    Most gold farmers are Chinese.

There's 3 links for ya there, I'm sure 3 Korean news sites totally made that up.. :)

A lot of those servers will probably die after release, I'm thinking but maybe not, we'll see.

3-6 months? This estimation was OK before AoC and War realesed. Now I'm thinking if a new mmo will manage to hold their open beta subs for like 3 or 6 months , that game will do very well. And I really have hopes for Aion, to be on of that MMo who will keep their open beta subs number and not only, but that they will manage to bring new players as time goes by. So, time will tell , but .. what are u doing on Aion forum if u see nothing new on it ?

I have seen none in-game as of yet. I'm playing on 2 servers.

i always knew this game was going to be a hit. ive been watching the latest trend on the mmo scene, and how the player base was evolving over the past 5-7 years. and this was the only game comming out i could find no fault with. while listening to the devs and there decisions, and hearing the accounts of the testers/critics. i knew they werent making any mistakes or comprimises. dont get me wrong, this is not by my standerds "the perfect MMORPG" i just feel it's going to be better then anything else out there. we shall see after NA release.........crosses fingers. see you all soon in AION

  • CharlizdCharlizd Member UncommonPosts: 923

I would not expect any less from Aion to be honest, the hype this game is gonna get it will deserve every bit of it, you wont find  any misleading hype numbers for this game they will all be genuine and besides that fact it dont need any bodgy numbers to make it look good it just is good end of story.

Way to go NcSoft ppl probably dont think much of this but take into perspective that the Asian MMO market is the biggest in the world and Aion has just Made a record breaking OB launch this is no feat to try and flame or discredit it is just a minor step for what is to come, one of the Biggest Games since WoW mark my words.

I don't know whether Aion is any good or not, but NCSoft's Lineage 2 broke 2 million subscribers in South Korea alone and Aion is seen as the spiritual successor to Lineage 2 by many fans of that game.

Aion hitting these kind of numbers in their open beta is not surprising at all. It however is NO indication of how well the game will do in North America or Europe.

im going to dissagree with you 100% seeing as im actually playing the OB

and also no one seems to mention that OB is only for 10 days (unless they add more time due to the full servers) and after that a wipe or characters before they release the game on a P2P subscription.

so thats why you are completley wrong, why would (chinese) gold farmers play on korean servers for 10 days to farm gold to get wiped???

and also you dont even need that much gold, unlike some mmos where you need millions. i mean lvl 2 quests give you 500+ gold but lvl 5 i have over 10k just from quests and grinding. and had new skills armor and upgraded it.

i suggest that you people who are making assumptions to stop, and read a little about the game before posting.read about the beta and what is actually going on.
