Aion is going to do great in Asia....its the western market I would be wondering about. MMOs still are not very popular here compared to Asia.
And how many of those Koreans are gold or credit farmers , making their start ahead of time?
dude u read my mind. id bet half those so called players are nothing but gold and credit farmers/bots getting started early lol. even if there isnt any direct sign. they are there trust me. give it time. they come out of the woodwork like a bunch of dirty cockroaches.
im going to dissagree with you 100% seeing as im actually playing the OB
and also no one seems to mention that OB is only for 10 days (unless they add more time due to the full servers) and after that a wipe or characters before they release the game on a P2P subscription.
so thats why you are completley wrong, why would (chinese) gold farmers play on korean servers for 10 days to farm gold to get wiped???
and also you dont even need that much gold, unlike some mmos where you need millions. i mean lvl 2 quests give you 500+ gold but lvl 5 i have over 10k just from quests and grinding. and had new skills armor and upgraded it.
i suggest that you people who are making assumptions to stop, and read a little about the game before posting.read about the beta and what is actually going on.
I agree it does amaze me how they can come here nad read the post before them and try to continue flaming yet they can't head over to a site with some good resources on the game and read some intelligent info.
Maybe reading any more than a few lines gives them a headache, Nothing bugs me more than ppl with little to no facts or any kind of Contributing argument to the cause, but unfortunately this is what we get on Forums like these.
I don't know whether Aion is any good or not, but NCSoft's Lineage 2 broke 2 million subscribers in South Korea alone and Aion is seen as the spiritual successor to Lineage 2 by many fans of that game. Aion hitting these kind of numbers in their open beta is not surprising at all. It however is NO indication of how well the game will do in North America or Europe.
You should have mentioned that Lineage 2 has enjoyed the largest amount of subscribers worldwide, with over 17 million at the end of last year.
Unfortunately due to the quality and the lack of the western marketing- and PR champaign of the game, it will never get close to these numbers here in Europe and in NA. What they're doing here with the western version of the game (on a marketing level ofc) is ridiculous and pathetic...or dare we say: typical NCsoft....
The Korean numbers are great, 'though ive read if they want their quarter plans to be satisfying and not to be a failure, they need approx. 330k ppl in KOBT. While the inital numbers look promising, they're gonna need to gather at least 30% more ppl for that. We'll see.
and also no one seems to mention that OB is only for 10 days (unless they add more time due to the full servers) and after that a wipe or characters before they release the game on a P2P subscription.
And there's the reason so many are playing right now. Noone has to pay for it.
and also no one seems to mention that OB is only for 10 days (unless they add more time due to the full servers) and after that a wipe or characters before they release the game on a P2P subscription.

We're talking about the most populated OB in history, which will probably double or even triple the previous record with only one country allowed.
and also no one seems to mention that OB is only for 10 days (unless they add more time due to the full servers) and after that a wipe or characters before they release the game on a P2P subscription.

oh wow no one has to pay for a game that is OB for 10 days OMG. and maybe so many people are playing it BECAUSE its only for 10 days, not like other OB that seem to last forever and you can play 1 day and then not again till the week after.
fact is, IF you want to test a game before you buy it, and you want to get to a good enough lvl to actually see how the game is (as lvl 10 is end of training) then in 10 days you dont have a great deal of time to actually test it, also seeinf as 99% of the time all server are full and you need to wait anywhere between 10 and 60 mins to get on the servers.
so in fact most of the people playing the OB are playing 10 days to try and see if they will like it at higher lvl, to expierence pvp, class changes, flying and so on before they have to PAY for it.
i know thats why i am testing it.
in regards to the blah blah blah they havent marketed it for western versions.
No why would they, its been said all along that they will get the korean version woring perfectly and then start to focus on the western versions including invite only testing, competitin winer testing, games conventions (some which have already happened) theres enough info on the official sites that let you know whats going on, but why would they market a game before they can even give release date.
seen it too many times before when companies start to market too early, pushing out videos and screens and getting too much hype before the games even finished, which leads to dissapointment and flaming from people who EXPECT that the guestimated release date wasnt met.
Im sure within the next few months there will be marketing campaigns as NC have almost finished on the translations for western areas.
hmm where do i get my info?? with no marketing or news on the game???
Following that thought, was there a lot of marketing for Guild Wars? Back when it released I had just discovered MMOs and went to Gamestop to buy City of Heroes, dude at the counter asked me if I was sure I wanted to get this when a newer game called GW was coming out the next week... I had never heard of it before, and I ended uo playing both games.

I like that fact
Currently L1, and L2, are maxed at about 1million subscribers. And this is after a steady decline since 2005 where it had little over 2million As seen here.
Although these graphs are impossible to be 100% accurate, they make a pretty good generalization and are rarely off by over 10,000.
The statement that said L2 had over 17million worldwide is "All the subscriptions ever, even not currently playing or subscribed" Hence why they "Enjoyed those subscriptions" Because they are not currently enjoying them.
But it is true Aion has a pretty damn good recordbreaking beta, I hope it does even better than L1 or L2 so it can be in good water for along time to come.
Where do all these people come from? They just sit and make something up about the game to try and make it look bad. Its funny to read about how ignorant they are for a bit but then it just gets annoying.
Anyways, Hopefully the game does do good. The beta numbers are looking good.(even if it is just in korea) I'm just glad that they are taking so much time to port it to here and not rushing the process, making sure it's done the right way.

Using mmogchart.com (or wikipedia.com) as evidence really is a silly mistake. Bruces numbers are fictitious at best. I have been involved in the industry a long time and not once have I known those numbers to be taken seriously by anyone that would be considered 'in-the know'. Every year when this site posts his annual 'report' I end up arguing with Jon Wood about it, but then again, this site isn't exactly known for its impartiality any more. As any statistician will tell you, even if you make an 'educated' guess at a single number, that completely negates the whole results.
You don't give a link to your statements, but I managed to find a few places that say something similar (though they quote 14 million). You really should have pointed out that there is an ongoing debate as to what the NCSoft statements actually mean, and not one that will not easily be resolved unless the industry actually formulates a standard.
I do, however, share your support and opinion on Aion, so let's not derail this thread farther on something that really is inconsequential.

True but how many times do you play a game just because its free. If its a bad game and free = I won't play it. If its good = yes ( and pay for it ).

There is no point in spending money on marketing when its not close to release in the west, Expect that to change when it gets closer.

Anime inspired art and character models and hairstyles: Check.
Angel wings and/or other wings attached to players: Check.
Crazy ridiculous sized armor and weapons: Check.
Decent graphics unlike 98% of Korean MMO's: Check.
True open beta where anyone and their mother is allowed in: Check.
I'll try it out if/when they do an American open beta/event. But I won't hold my breath because most of these Korean MMO's are built up to sound a heck of a lot better than they ever turn out to be.

Aion's Korean open beta is now boasting concurrent user numbers of 150,000.
Since launching the service at 6am on the 11th, 150,000 players managed their way into Atreia by 11pm the same day. Aion is now operating with a total of 25 servers, with each server exceeding the 5000 player target NCsoft had set out for their servers. Upon login, players are finding most servers on the list marked as 'full'. Taking into account all the users in queue for the servers, the number of concurrent users could possibly be seen as closer to 200,000. Considering that the launch was done on a weekday, the numbers are expected to go up as many more attempt to join over the weekend. (ETnews reports that this is a record for a Korean developed MMO opening in Korea. The past record holders have been Lineage2 and Ragnarok 2 but even they were only able to reach 100k after a month of open beta testing. No mention of how WoW did in comparison, but WoW had over 150k concurrent users at its peak during its Korean open beta according to an interview with Mike Morhaine.) NCsoft is now dealing with the happy dilemma of handling a much greater level of interest than they'd anticipated. Having already added 7 more servers than originally planned, continuing to add to that pool is only one way of handling the situation. The first change implemented immediately was to cut down on the scale of the promotions that were planned to begin on the 13th. This decision was made so that Aion's user base grew in increments that they could actually handle. Unsurprisingly, many players are venting their frustration at the situation. Players that used the pre-beta services to reserve their spots had it easier, but those that didn't were having to wait in long queues just to create their characters. (note: Many of these players were sitting in netcafes as well, so you can imagine the added pressure.)
There will be 'preview events' so people can have the chance to try the game in english before the english release. Stay tuned for info early 2009 I'd say.
