So I finally got around to buying a next-gen console. My pc is now so out-dated that it is struggling to play any current games, and I am so tired of constantly having to upgrade, and for there always to be some issue with my pc (I've been hampered with blue screen errors, being sold fake copies of windows, power supply burning out, and this is just this year!). I've watched in envy at all of the gorgeous new games being released, and so I got an x-box 360.
Now, I don't have a lot of disposable income, so I can't just go out and buy a new game whenever I feel like it, especially as I am running a couple of MMO subs as well. So this Christmas I am hoping to get one or two shiny new titles, and this is where I need your help.
As this is a MMORPG site, and one which I have been visiting now for a couple of years, I know off no other people who will be better qualified to recommend me a title. As you might expect, I am primarily a rpg-fan, although I do enjoy other genres as well, such as RTS for example. I also quite like some frist-person shooters, some racers, some shoot-em-ups, some sports games, and some puzzle games. Mostly though I love anything sci-fi/fantasy.
These are the titles I was mostly thinking about; Fable 2, Fall-out 3, GTA 4, End Game, Gears of War 2, Force Unleashed.
Although I know roughly what each of these are like, I have not checked up any reviews of them yet (I will do, but want to know you folks impressions of them first).
So what game would you recommend? And why? It does not have to be any that are listed, just anyone that you really liked, and think that I will enjoy as well, and please give your reasons why.
Massive thanks to anyone that takes the time to answer. I value you folks opinion, as it will probably be more like my own, rather than some games journalist who just gives the latest beat 'em up a rave review and snorts diresively at any rpg.

If you like Sci-Fi, do try and find a deal on Mass Effect and Bioshock. They're two of the highest acclaimed 360 titles, and in addition to being shooters, Mass Effect has squad-management tactics that might give you a bit of a strategy buzz, and both are awesome in terms of their story.
While the above two are pretty much RPGs to me (maybe Bioshock counts as an FPS more due to the perspective), Fable II I'd suggest for an RPG fix. It's newer though so expect full price.
Fallout 3 and Grand Theft Auto 4 aren't bad either. Both are similar in that they can be short-lived if you follow the main story line and don't do a whole lot of side missions. But if you do take your time, they'll last a while. An additional perk for these two titles in particular is that both have downloadable content scheduled for the first couple of months next year; so you wouldn't wait long for gameplay to be expanded.
Gears of War 2 is a-ok as well, but a lot of its merits are based on online play and some optional modes it has. Mainly I wouldn't suggest skipping over the first Gears of War since knowing its story, characters and NPCs you confront will heighten the gameplay of the second one since you'll "get" a lot of things.
Thanks for your reply, it has helped me to make up my 'shortlist' (and also made me think twice about Gears of War 2).
Actually, funny you should mention Mass Effect, as this was the very first game I bought for my 360, and I love it. (Plus I got it for £20, half what it was when first came out).
Thanks for the pointer to Bioshock. I had not thought of that game before. Is it like a survival horror game, but in FPS format? (I forgot to mention that I love this genre as well, like Resident Evil series for example). Also is there a Bioshock 2 just about to come out?
So far I am leaning towards Fable 2 and Fallout 3. I loved the first two Fall-out games, and I know that Bethesda has taken over the rights, and used the same engine as Oblivion. (I loved Oblivion as well) How does this compare? Is it quite sand-boxy like Oblivion, in that you can practically go anywhere and do anything? Or is it more linear?
Oh, and before I forget, how does the multi-player aspect of Fable 2 work?
It's a survival-horror, but to me it wasn't "scary". There's some startling moments but the genre labelling is more substantitive towards his great story. Has everything you'd expect of a survival-horror game though; dark areas, creepy silence, monstrousities and all.
BioShock's really in a category of it's own when it comes to bridging FPS and RPG; just as Fallout 3 is an FPS and RPG in its own unique way.
BioShock 2 is slated for 2009, along with Mass Effect 2.
Oblivion and Fallout 3 are pretty similar. The one huge thing missing that disappointed me was the lack of joining factions and ranking up; but the trade off that grew on me were the "Perks" and the way they alter gameplay.
'sides that, Fallout 3 has features and improvements Oblivion doesn't have, in general as a past Fallout fan you'd probably like to see how VATS is realized in 3D.
Fallout 3 is as much a sandbox as Oblivion. Takes the same approach of allowing the player to ignore the main quest as long as they like, and do all the side quests and other things like owning and decking out a residence, or crafting.
Fable 2's multiplayer can be played online or off, and it's 2 players. If you're connected to live and playing singleplayer, you're able to enable in settings an option to "show" people on your friend lists. They'll appear as orbs/their gamer pics if they're playing Fable 2 as well and you just so happen to be in the same spot.
You're able to chat and give gifts, or go into one another's world. When playing in the same world, the host is able to set some rules. The other player is able to keep experience and other things gained and take it back to their own world. It's pretty cool.
for action, i would recommend gears of war 2.. well, based from the first gow, i don't need to explain the reason why you should get the second one for rpg, FABLE 2 is a must!! my friend is playing it and he told me that the environment is very interactive.. how you want to progress as good or evil in the game is up to the player

I'm new to the 360 ( got mine a few weeks ago ) - so far have played :
Fallout 3 : very free roaming & fun . If Fallout 2 & Oblivion married & made a baby this would be it .
Fable 2 : You can pretty much do as you please , race through the main quest or not , become a property mogul , oppress or save people & its got fun simple combat . A very easy going game & very casual feeling to me . The odd bug here & there but still worth the money IMO .
Left for dead : If you like Shooting lots ( and lots ) of zombies then this is superb , no puzzles & very co-op friendly ( but still great solo ) .

I knew that you guys would not falil to deliver, and I thank you all very much for your eloquent opinions.
I've heard some brief comments in regards to Dead Space, and would really like to hear a little more about it., before finally making up my choice.
Fable 2, amd Fall-out 3 are currenytly the strong contenders. I like their non-liear gamplay and story.
Howvever, although I have no doubt that Fable 2 will be an amazing game, but one of the things the sort of put me off with the original Fable, was that it was quite 'cartoony'. Something I don't really like. Don't get me wrong, I have loves with a strong since of humour (such as the likes of the Monkey Island games). and I do not mind if Fable 2 has some light, comedy moments. However, will probably steer clear if it is in the same, comdedy bracket of say; The Bard's Tale (as in the new one). So is it a comincal universe, or is there enough darker moments to maintain a good balance?
Also, I am still thinking about GTA IV, which I have told is an absoloutely amazing game. What do you guys think of it?
Incidentall - are there any point and click adventure games available on the 360? You know, like Sam & Max, Monkey Island. Broken Sword games? I love these kind of titles.
If possible, can you rate your recommended games out of 10, and also tell me why they are so good.
Once again, I will be extremely gratefull to any posters. As I have decided to stay at home this Christmas day, which ever title I finally choose will be the one I will be playing. So it is important I choose the right one, else I shall be stuck in the house on X-mas, eating cold turkey sandwhiches, and watching some crud on the TV!
Ive played every game for 360 so far, sitting here waiting for prince of persia.
Puzzle platform - Mirriors edge
3rd person shooter - Gears of war 2
fps - call of duty: world at war
racing - Ids say midnight club LA, some people would say need for speed undercover, they are both good, i like midnight club more though.
adventure / Sandbox - saints row 2 is way better then grand theft auto 4 if you are into that type of game.
Adventure / platformer - tomb raider underworld is also very good
Jrpg - tales of vesparia, all the rest suck, just god the last remnant the game is terrible.
RPG - Fallout 3 is a must have rpg - fable 2 is terrible, i dont know what people see in this game, it is like halo too me, overrated garbage.
Horror - dead space, id also recommend watching the movie that goes with it.
If you plan on going on live - left 4 dead, only if you like fps games though, the gmae has no single player replay value.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Desert - before I read this I was really leaning towards Fable 2, Fallout 3 and maybe GTA 4, but now I don't know.
You say Fable 2 is terrible? Please can you elaborate? Did you play the first one, and what did you think of that one? I was really liking the idea of Fable 2, and how your choices could determine how the world turns out. Also I love the ideo of the dog companion. And also how people can jump in and out of your game. So what is it that you don't like? Is it a cartoony game? As this can sometimes put me off a game. I played Fable 1 for a little while, but I did enjoy it though, so do you think in that case I will enjoy this one?
Also, has Fallout 3 loads of different side missions to go on, and quite free roaming?
Other games I would still like to hear more about are Tom Clancy's End War (you know the one with the voice activation?) and also Star Wars the Force Unleashed.
By the way, last night whilst playing Mass Effect, I finally got to have a conversation with a Reaper for the first time, being a hologram of Saren's ship; Sovereign, and they sound like a candidate for the best baddies in a video game ever!
Also, can anyone tell me the approx size of these games? Oh, and you mentioned The Last Remnant, which I was also considering as an outside choice. Is it really bad? Bearing in mind that I used to love some Final Fantasy games (mosly VII for the psone, and X for the ps2, even had a go of FFXI on the pc, but it was a huge time sink).
It's looking as though I am going to have to get two games, even if it means I have to buy one myself, as there are just too many good ones to choose from.
Unless anyone would like to start an exchange system, where we swapped our used games for others?
So far I have three games I would be willing to put up for exchange:
Project Gothem Racing 4.
Quake 4.
The Lost Oddessy (although I am just starting to get into this mammoth, 4 disc game, and I'm really enjoying it)

Lost oddessy is boring, trust me, it is 4discs but alot of that is cut scenes, its not a must have, tales of vesperia is much better, The last remnant is not good at all in my opinion, but that is mostly because the story is corney and the combat system is far too automated.
When it comes to choice fallout 3 is much better, it has a ton of exploration, way more then fable 2 provided you dont rush to finish the main quest first, i have fallout 3 on pc for the player mods but it took me 72 hours to beat it, i am currently on my second play through, but it is heavily modded this time around.
Yes i played fable 1 and the only real difference between 1 and 2 is the gender selection and the dog, i dont really concider fable an rpg in teh true sense as there is no real choice compared too fallout 3 and tales of vesparia.
All xbox 360 games are 6gigsdummied up to 8.6, one dl disc each except last remnant which is 2 discs.

I have Fallout 3 and if you are the kind of person that likes exploring and basically having an open world where you can just do whatever you want then its a great game. If you are more into CoD4 and fast action games then Fallout 3 wont be enough constant action for you. Never played Gears of War 2 but friends say the first is amazing so that could be the fast action title for you.
Well, from the information you folks have kindly given me, it seems that Fallout 3 is a must have. Therefore, it will probably be number one of my list.
However, I must say that I am disappointed with people's downer on Fable 2. I was really expecting this to be my new top game, I liked the idea of how you could jump into other people's Fable worlds and see how different they were to your own. I also liked the idea of an alignment system, where your actions actually have some dynamic effects on how the game turns out. Come to think of it, I think that the MMORPG scene should start to implement alignment more in their games. It seems like a wasted oppertunity, which creative devs could use. I know that EQ2 has a limited use of this, but its effect is really just to define which city and side you will beling to. (Perhaps I shall add a thread concerning this on the Pub forum, as it seems like a wasted oppertunity)
Also, I was really wanting to hear of anyone's experience with 'Tom Clancey's: End War'. A 'command & conquer type game' that uses player speech to control the game, rather than actual joypad input. I was curious as to how reponsive it was to player's accents (seeing as how I am Scottish), and also if it required a micro-phone to be bought seperately, or if it came with the game?
Before I forget, there is one more title that has entered the fray, and really put a spanner in the works, as I thought my shortlist of a couple of games had finally been made up.
The game in question is Jason and the Rise of the Argonauts. I believe it is very similar in play-style to Bioware's masterpiece; 'Mass Effect'. Now, let it be known that I am a massive fan of this company, and of games like the aforementioned space opera.
Does anyone have any info on it? Will it be released for Christmas? I hope not, as it will make my final choice all the more difficult!
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any information.
