Fallout 3..... WOW

AstralglideAstralglide Member UncommonPosts: 686

I was really skeptical about Fallout 3. I played the first two installments of the game, many times, and Fallout Tactics. I didn't really like Morrowind or Oblivion too much, buyt this game kicks so much fucking ass I can't believe it. I hope the the Fallen Earth MMO can even grasp a little of this game's style, and overall badassitude. Fuck yeah, Bethseda.

I am currently looking for a new game for my x-box 360.  Fallout 3 is certainly one of the main contenders, and so I frequently check-in here to read people's reviews and opiions of it.

I would have taken yours much more seriously if you had not felt it necessary to pepper your post with profanity.  I'm not against the use of swearing if it adds to the overall context of the material.  Yours however, just had the effect of negating any view that may have convinced me to buy. as it bordered on the moronic.

Maybe if you were to tell me why you enjoyed the game so much, then I would take on board your points.  Also, if possible, give examples from the game to illustrate your point, rather than just saying something like along the lines of 'god this game is fking awesome!'.  I would be curious to know why you thought so, and therefore it might convince me to buy.

Like you I also loved the first two Fall-out games, and was also a fan of Oblivion.  However, I am unsure as to whether the two types of game will work. and I would be interested to hear from you, and any others out there, if this first-person viewpoint works.  Are there cut-scenes?  And is there quite a lot of free choice on where you want to go and explore?

Only a few hours in and its pretty cool, HOWEVER...

Standing at point blank range and emptying an entire clip of 9mm bullets into someones heads as they keep swinging a bat at me kills any immersion or realism they were attempting with this game.

Its just stupid.  I understand that I might miss someone running at me across the room.  That makes sense.   But I'm watching slow motion footage of someone getting hit in the face over and over again with a gun and he stands their like nothing is happening.    I want to lose myself in the game but this doesn't allow me to.  These are normal people, not super mutants or zombies.  They don't have helmets on.  They're wearing what amounts to normal clothing and they stand there taking bullet after bullet.

    I agree.  I said WOW as well=)

Here is why: You must understand that the combat is frantic.  When you are fighting a guy point blank range, he is not just standing there, giving you head shots, he's moving left and right, up and down, jinking left and right, his head moves everytime he attacks.  Think about the fight in real time, and think about a guy fighting you with a bat, while you hold our your pistol, sure you will do more damage than him, BUT, you wont hit every time.

This game lets some things fly for the same of being playable, and that's why i love it, because it still immerses me in the world it's created.

    My HARDCORE Story

I understand that, but I'm not missing=)  I'm hitting him over and over again, watching blood fly out of his face as I hit him in the head 4 or 5 times in a row.  He's not juking.  He's just standing there.  In a game with graphics, I shouldn't have to imagine that I'm really missing even though I'm watching myself hit.  This kind of thing worked in an old RPG like FF with cartoony 2d graphics or a MUDD.

I'm not a realism whore or anything but when I have to imagine things to make the game "better" the developer failed at providing an immersive experience  Lets take Stalker for example since its kind of similar.  In the begining, you really are missing a lot, the gun is jamming and/or is in cruddy condition.   Your enemies are wearing body armor as well, so it makes sense you can't take them down so easy.   It works.  The average enemy in F3 in the begining is a dog, giant rat or an insane starving person.  Insane starving people aren't super human=)  They're actually quite weak and feeble.  I'm wearing body armor and a helmet.  I can take a bullet.  They shouldn't be able to take much at all.  Basically the balance of the game is all out of whack to create artificial difficulty and thats an excuse for bad game design.  Its not fun shooting someone wearing spandex 6-12 times with a gun when they're standing right in front of you=)

On a side note, why can't Bethesda hire a real animator or 2?   They  really are horrible.  They should almost be embarrased putting out work that looks amaturish.

I thought the animations were amazing.  I played the game and got so enthralled that I lost sleep for over a week for playing the game so much.

As for the whole realism thing, you think it's weird that people can take multiple bullets to the head (and they do react, I don't know what you're talking about when you say they just stand there), but you don't think it implausible that bomb shelters with a 50s theme were set up around Washington DC?

It's a video game, buddy.  And it ROCKS.  Defintely the best all around game I've ever played.

    In short:

It's the FPS that's not really an FPS cuz your guns are gimped.

It's the RPG that's not very much of an RPG cuz your choices and their impact are very limited.

Got bored with it after about 50 hours.

i hate to diss FO3 but bethesda didnt do a good enough job to rip it from oblivion its too similiar in so many ways but instead of getting magic swords and bows we get knifes and guns....... monsters are replaced with civi's more human based mobs and the odd big bad monster......

tbh i wanted to see the game play like S.T.A.L.K.E.R and have the gameplay of oblivion and some originality.

Have to give it credit though the storyline is pretty good and isnt too generic XD

Yea i loved the story especially the bit with Liberty Maximus lobbing atomic bombs at Enclave troops like grenades shouting cheesy slogans like 'Communism is a tempory setback to world freedom'.

Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

    Liberty Prime, you mean.

My apologies. I did not realize that we had such a sensitive crowd of members who would take an offense to the use of profane language. Seeing as how my online vernacular is inadequate for someone with refined sensibilities as yours, would it be better if I told you to  enjoy auto-erotic rectal forication?  Please do, I think that you will find it very tight.

if you need to be convinced to buy a game by some random person online, then you should just quit gaming altogether. If you dont like profanity in any way shape or form, i also suggest you go find another forum where it censors words like fuck to ****. being the first post and critisizing someone for expressing how much he likes FO3 confuses me. If you do look on this site for reviews then you should have used the search tool, there are plenty of threads about FO3 on this site.

I am going to have to buy it.

I just bought GTA IV for the PC, even though I have it for XBox and PS3.

I keep hearing good things about Fallout 3.  I have Fallout 2, which I did not care all that much for.

  • FO3 is like a sanitised FO game. You cannot do any really evil stuff anymore, not on the personal, visceral level.

    Times have changed.

I loved Morrowind because it was so harsh and so ugly it was a lot of fun finding the places where it was broken. I like Oblivion and I also like FO3 a lot, for what it is. Bethesda have captured the essence of FO but society, politics and censorship have changed what games can and cannot do.
