It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!

Seriously, I hope this game does not cater to the Jedi crowd.

Thinking back to all the problems that started in SWG (Yes I know this game is not SWG or SOE) but I am getting the feeling looking at all the "Can I be a Jedi posts" that there is gonna be more Jedi in this game running around then the other classes (if there are any) in the game.

Sure, sure I know it is set thousands of years before Anakin is born and such but what roles and possibilities can be produced by giving bonuses to a world/universe filled with Jedi players and 20 gabillion Jedi counsels being set up in a game?

I'm starting to worry not because of the game's dynamic but because of the nature of people's playing (History always repeats itself).

If you don't feel like reading up on the game, just take a look at the screenshots. I think you'll find your answer there.

Yeah, I signed up for the forums yesterday but haven't had anytime to do any real research based on my medical intern (holidays are filled with accidents). I'll read up on it and post some feed back and thoughts on it probably later today.

Well what other class would you want to be?  The only cool thing about Starwars was the Jedi IMO, so of course people will be those.   Thats the whole reason why I played SWG, being a muggler or some other class just seemed so lame to me when you could be a Jedi.

But I guess there are those that have interest in other things.

I didn't play SWG because of the way they handled jedi.  If they don't have jedi, I would pass on this game too.

In LOTRO you couldn't play a Wizard because in the Lore it was clearly stated that there only were a select number of wizards in the entire world of Middle-Earth, each one tasked with a specific mission in the world. They were not human by definition, they were a race by themselves.

Being too powerful was only a secondary reason.

As for Jedi in ToR. Sheesh people...this discussion has been done to death. The decision on that is already made (or so it would appear).

Like I said, just look at the screenshots. I wasn't poking fun or anything. I've read pretty much every bit of info released officially, and a picture really does paint a thousand words.

Kudos on your chosen career btw. I'm currently involved in Artificial Intelligence research, but planning on going back to university next year to retrain as a Psychologist. Brains > Binary is my new motto

The Star Wars lore made it plain that there were only a few Jedi/Sith left in the universe. Didn't stop SOE and LucasArts from filling SWG with 'em.

This shows the level of authenticity Turbine is willing to apply to an outside IP, in comparison to what LucasArts is willing to apply to their own.

Yes, but with LOTR, it was a SET number. It wasn't vague at all. Plus, SWG is set in another part of Star Wars history. So that does not apply here in any case.

Anyway, my main reason to post was that, if you are afraid/hate Jedi/Dark Jedi, then this game is most likely not for you.

i think this will be a game with a world of jedi's, hope not, but looks like it

  • aleosaleos Member UncommonPosts: 1,943

In the universe of star wars before the fall of the jedi there were alot of them but they werent everywhere. but whos to know who wasnt force sensitive that the order never found or a sith never converted... I think TOR will be balanced and will obviously run into bumps along the way. however if you dont want to be a jedi then dont, if you see a lot of jedi so what dont play if you dont like it.

It's my personal opinion the "Jedi crowd" you're referring to was widely a collection of munchkins eager to:

    a) garner a trophy to their e-peen

    b) lord over others with an "alpha" class

    c) channel their OCD

It had as little to do with Star Wars as the rest of the game.

At first I wasn't looking forward to alot of jedi/sith running around, but I've since changed my mind.  As long as they don't make them superior to the other classes and give the other classes fun stuff to do.  I think we'll see people playing all the different classes in the game.  I know I'll probably have a sith character, but I surely also want to be a smuggler or another class as well.  (I'm an altahollic so I'll make as many different characters as I can.)

I know that I feel SWG was ruined by the whole holocron craze which I endulged in myself.  Mastering all professions in the game except for pollotician just to get a jedi character slot that I never bothered to play much at all once I acheived it.  Then when they made jedi a starting class for everyone the joke was really on me.  I've moved past SWG now though and since the timeline is different in TOR, I accept that there will be a boat load of jedi/sith running around.

Again, I say as long as they don't make the jedi/sith characters overpowered compared to the other classes, then I expect to see many people such as myself playing as something other than a jedi/sith.

This website is a safe haven for trolls and haters. I'm done with this pathetic site.

anyone know what other classes u can be? Bounty hunter maybe?

  • DouhkDouhk Member Posts: 1,019

There really is no feasible way to avoid any sort of Jedi issues with an MMO surrounded around the Star Wars franchise. It is inevitable that a good amount of the players in the game (I'd go as far to say as little as at least 2/5 of all players come launch being jedi or sith) will be playing the lightsaber wielders.

To be honest, I think the smartest thing Bioware can do is realize this and prepare for this. They'll need to realize that they need to make their other classes just as unique, interesting, and valuable (PvP or PvE), and maybe then they'll be lucky if only 1/3 of all players are jedi/sith.

Just watch the recent video and you will know your answer. They showed NOTHING but Jedi and Sith fighting with Lightsabers. This game is going to be very strongly oriented towards Jedi, and it is a shame. I don't care that this takes place in KotOR timeline, Jedi were more common but not everywhere. Jedi should be special, not "Click... Your a Jedi!"

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

oh wah.. the jedi crowd is what makes star wars popular.. i mean.. almost every good star wars game has been revolving around jedis.. who actually played swg and didn't try to do the darn near impossible jedi quests before they made it easy? who played kotor without being a jedi? who plays star wars d20 and doesnt at least have one jedi in the party.. jedi are the quintessential star wars badass..

  • metalhead980metalhead980 Member Posts: 2,658

Please get SWG out of your heads people!

This game has nothing to do with that Pos game.

In TOR jedi and sith are everywhere so It makes sense that we could just make one on character creation.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be a jedi or sith.

People refering to players that play Jedis as noobs are idiots Its an available class in the game you aren't special for wanting to be a bounty hunter or a commando.

All these QQ jedis will ruin this game posts are pathetic.

    PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

    Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

this will be nothing but a jedi  fest i mean come on only reason anyone loves the idea of a star wars game is to have that lightsaber, hell i wanted one once some one told me about new village quest in the CU only time i ever quested in that game for anything  and they took out holo grind that i was still doing in the hope to unlock the force an i was still willing to train and get killed and have my jedi be hit with the permadeath just to have that saber but that was a  hard and long task at the time in old swg. i seen what a lot of jedi running around looks like its called NGE.

there is nothing to see here move along... move along..

I wouldnt want to play as a jedi/Sith. Of course I would try em out sooner or later but if could choose... Mandalorian with a vibro sword and a pair of blaster pistols.

"Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and things with... molecular structures."

I think you are forgetting that this game takes place in the OLD republic. This is the Star Wars time period where there were thousands of Jedis and Dark Jedis running around. This is NOT supposed to be the same period as any of the Star Wars movies.

I personally wouldn't want to play another class in a game that focueses around the Jedi/Sith war. That wouldn't be any fun IMO...

The main story, as has been stated, is the war between the Jedi and the Sith.  Why would they not have a lot of these chars involved if they are the story?

One argument I love is why there would be so many jedi running around if they are so special.  Guess what?  You aren't supposed to be a Joe Schmoe.  In games, you are supposed to be the hero/villain.  Even in an MMO, you are supposed to be a difference maker.  In the star Wars world, for the most part, those heroes and villains are the Jedi and the Sith.  If you want to be normal, Second Life is calling your sorry ass.

As long as they keep it balanced, and the gameplay is good, the Jedi whiners can stuff it.

That is not the reason, the reason is that it only existed 4 immortal wizards, making more is against the lore.

A game with no Jedis or only Jedis, it doesn't really matter for you are heroes or Villains, not some schmuck janitor.

It is cool to make a game where people play regular joes too, like playing the creatures in Dungeon keeper or a regular soldier in the Crusades but most games go for the heroic things.

And yet there's thread up and thread down all over the MMO sphere, about no one feeling like a hero, cuz everyone is "a hero" and a clone and whatnot....

Meanwhile, in old SWG, where everyone was Joe Schmoe, only the glowbat masturbators complained about not being heroes..once they werent so much alpha :p
