It'll either be really good or it won't... But let's consider a few things:

I was hyped for Dark and Light...

I was hyped for Age of Conan...

I was hyped for several games that never even made it to beta...

I definitely feel the excitement for this one though perhaps not as much from the community on these forums as on the Darkfall forums. Naturally, home base is where the most fans are.

I don't think there is anything wrong with getting excited, but I am unfortunately in agreement with those that will not be interested in buying the game until they've tried it. Those that believe this are more often than not the ones who feel Darkfall is vaporware or at least that's my impression from what I've read.

I'd like to give it a go... but weighing the cost $50 for a digital download... I swore I read somewhere they were only going to charge a monthly rate, perhaps that was years ago. I remember going to a movie back in the day and it was just a waste of time, but at least I could say, "Oh well there goes $4..." Of course now it's, "There goes $30 and some change..."

I'd like to be able to say, "Well there's goes $50 oh well." but with the way food costs these days....

I think more people aren't jumping behind Darkfall for those same reasons..

I'll start from the begining.. of my "anti blind faith" movement.

I started with Vanguard, I wasn't a forum watcher so much, as a guy who posted occasionally, when they missed the July 2006 launch date.. I thought nothing of it..  And still would have loved the game, had it not of been rushed out in January of 2007.

Then it was AoC.. I knew that I had to get in early to be competitive end game (and to get in on all those "beginning memories").  and.. Well.. we all know what happened with AoC..

After that, it was WAR.  The videos looked good.  The PR could talk a good game... And?? WAR is not a terrible game.. just lacking the RP part of MMORPG.

and.. now here comes Darkfall.  Little press about the game, no REAL review, and some guy putting down any one who thinks darkfall isn't the next coming of christ.. ..

that and Aventurine hasn't asked you for any money yet and didn't give out pre release shit and stuff like Aoc and Dark and Light.

though OP is SOMEWHAT justified in his concerns, the horrible PR and retarded beta process is a warning.

Yep, only a few more weeks and we'll find out if the game can live up to its promise.

I'll be hanging back until the US release, when and if it happens.

I've only been paying to Darkfall intermittently.  My philosophy on it can be summarized thus: If it releases, that's fine, but I have no high expectations that it will be released in January or in the rest of 2009.  Whether I agree with the ideology of the game or its makers is another matter, but unlike others who find the premise ludicrous and drop the word "vaporware" every time they can, I don't let this interfere with the more practical questions surrounding the state of Darkfall's development. (If anything, it's in my interest to see the game being released, since its failure could prove once and for all that the "hardcore PvP" school of design is a quick road to commercial disaster -- and I will gladly eat crow should it prove a success.  However, we can draw no conclusion if the game never releases.)

If Aventurine is serious about its game, it should definitely stick to a very strict timetable, instead of mentioning beta or release dates which are then postponed indefinitely without so much as an explanation (which they have had an unfortunate tendency to do).  If Aventurine produces no game on or around January 22nd as they have promised, the community should just forget about it and move on.

I think, however, that the January 22nd release date looks suspect, and here are the reasons why:

Because let's face it, the announcement was made on December 5, leaving a seven-week window until release.  We're not talking about long-term predictions of six months or a year with a lengthy "to do" list stapled to the bulletin board -- we're talking about less than two months, which should indicate that the game is very near completion. Yet don't you think it looks strange, a game set to be released with such a short notice for which no open beta has been offered or even scheduled?

Don't you also think it strange that the Darkfall website should make no mention of said release date, when any other game developer about to release a game would have had a banner on their main page to announce it?  Some might say a website isn't important, as some people argued in another thread.  That might be true for a low-scale restaurant in Wichita, but not for the gaming industry, let alone the MMO industry.  A website is the most important part of a promotional campaign, as Aventurine itself seems to have understood with their forums.  The rest of their website looks woefully outdated (like something from the time when everyone was using 800x600 resolution), and despite their aesthetic decisions in this regard, it's mostly the fact that nothing has been added to indicate that the situation has changed which raises a red flag in my mind.

As for the closed beta, why haven't we heard anything from it?  How many people are in it?  How were they selected?  Why hasn't the NDA been lifted if we are this close to release (or even to an open beta)?  I believe it was once announced that Aventurine had secured a publisher and was therefore not going to self-publish; yet have we heard anything from said publisher?  If the game is direct-to-download, why haven't we been told where the game would be available, at what price, and who would handle the payment information?

Why haven't the developers seen fit, for a game which has been plagued by rumours of vaporware status for months if not years, to release any video giving an indication of the game's features or its user interface?  Such secrecy works fine (and occasionally backfires) if you're a major industry player working on a highly anticipated project, but here we're dealing with an unproven  developer working on a house project with what I assume to be a shoestring budget and relying on word of mouth for promotion.  It's in cases like this that reassurances have to be offered -- yet what have we been offered apart from Tasos' bravado?

We have been offered nothing at all.  We don't even have an indication that the game is in a working state, or advanced in development.  Yet if Aventurine has the gall to let January 22nd pass, we will know what to expect from them: nothing at all.

We have, there are leaks, there are thenoobcomic sneak peaks, there are official vids.
How many people are in it?
a few hundred if you believe Tasos (and you by all means can mistrust him thats up to you)
    How were they selected?
Family and freinds, in a screen leak there was a confirmed longtime poster of official forums and 2 moderators of main forums. Generally people they trust not to break NDA supposedly.
Why hasn't the NDA been lifted if we are this close to release (or even to an open beta)?
Open betas are very rarely earlier then the few days before release. NDA is still intact couse they are in closed beta. Perhaps they still want to let people experience this world with no spoilers as they say, or perhaps they are keeping there shitty game a secret to fool you out of money - they have no pre-orders thou, and the few leaks can if anything point to the game atleast being playable (if ppl quit the beta in anger they usually leak, not caring for being banned). Your guess is as good as mine here.

Its going to be digital download, i have no clue how puplishers handles it that way... cant really answer this one sry.
If the game is direct-to-download, why haven't we been told where the game would be available, at what price, and who would handle the payment information?
Well you wont be able to download it for a few weeks still, and in one of the more recent interviews, Tasos mentiones that they are in the process of finalizing the prizing and all that shit. My guess is that most companies does this closer to launch, even the big game companies only say: itll be competetive with todays market up unthil they launch.

On the homepage: I believe Tasos said that togheter with finalizing the payment method and download procedures, they are also finalizing the new homepage. This might be why they dont give a damn about the old outdated one.

Stil think they could put up a banner on the frontpage IMHO... slackers.

Hope that helps you with some of your questions.

I'd like to be able to say, "Well there's goes $50 oh well." but with the way food costs these days....

Well, if you live in the US, you don't have to worry about the $50. After January 22, just wait until someone from the US joins the EU server, then see what those folks think. You don't have to join the EU servers, you can just sit back and wait for the official US/NA servers.

They did say that US are allowed to join because theirs won't be up at that time.

If you live in EU, just wait. There is nothing saying you have to be first in line :)
