Any word on the new IP they're supposed to be developing for their new MMO? I'd be VERY interested in seeing what it's about (seeing as they already have one high fantasy MMO, I'm hoping and praying it's gonna be a Sci Fi MMO).
I have not heard anything and knowing blizzard it will be a secret until they have something decent to show. I agree, the market could use a good sci fi mmo and like them or not blizzard makes good games.
Forget Funcom, look at how Bioware lied when they were asked if they were doing a Star Wars MMO. They denied and denied, and then went "Hey! LOOKIT ME! STAR WARZ!!!!"....I can't wait for that one either hehe.
By saying they arent going to use their existing IP what they realy are saying,we are looking to rip-off another game/book for ideas besides Warhammer/Warhammer 40k Universe.

Their game could be a ripoff about Barby and it would still be a more finished, well thought, working properly, fun and addictive than any other sad MMORPGs other there, maybe by the time it's released things will change.
World of Warcraft is a proof that MMORPG quality should affect schedule/budget and not the other way around.
Personally, I'm hoping it's horror or mystery based. I'm sick of both fantasy and sci-fi mmos.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal
but they are. this much theyve said. They also said it will not be one of their existing IP's, nor will it be anyone elses intelectual properties. reports came out as early as 2007 that mentioned an already existing 40 man, 3 team group of developers working on the project.
They have confirmed repeatedly that they are working on another MMO, before they announced diablo 3 and after they announced diablo 3. They've also had recruitment posts up on their Blizzard website for programmers to work on a "next generation MMO".
Personally I hope its a "real world" MMO, that idea surely attracts me, especially when its made by Blizzard. If it's a sci-fi MMO, then surely it will be Starcraft, there wouldn't be much point to launch another sci-fi brand when you already have one of the best known and most popular sci-fi brands available.
If I where Blizzard, purely from a financial perspective, I would release a StarCraft MMO (Starcraft Universe).
I would also announce this MMO right before the launch of StarCraft 2. Why? Because there is a whole group of WoW fans who might not play StarCraft 2 when its released, unless they heard the game is sort of the prequal to the "spiritual successor of WoW". Many people would buy StarCraft 2 just to be up to date and informed on the lore and background of StarCraft before its MMO reaches the market.
Blizzards own statements do however suggest it next gen MMO is going to be an entire new series.
As to what kind of game it should become, I would hope that much like WoW its a ripoff of all the other games of this generation, taking only the best of each. Many people have said it before, that WoW is not original, but that it simply took all the things that worked from Everquest and other games of its generation and slapped them together in an enjoyable game. That's exactly what the market needs right now as well, a developer who looks at the MMO's of the past years, AoC, WAR, Vanguard, TR, etc, etc, takes from these games what works and cuts out what doesn't and molds it into an enjoyable game that everyone can get into.
I asked if he was concerned about the new MMO potentially cannibalizing “WoW” subscribers.
Kaplan said he wasn’t worried at all, and that the company was going to great lengths to make sure that the new game doesn’t directly cannibalize “WoW.”
"With Starcraft II still being months if not years away from completion and release, it would be hard not to assume the highly likely chance of the game being associated with or a side-story of Blizzard’s crowning achievement, World of Warcraft.
Turns out that those assumptions would be wrong. Blizzard has recently announced that the new MMO will be it’s own separate game, and not linked to WoW or any of the other games produced in the past by the company. While this very well might not be the Diablo III that many of Blizzard’s loyal fans have been wishing for, it seems as though the PC gaming giant may be trying to spice up it’s MMO’s with something new. "
Personally, I would not be suprised if they are just saying that to throw off speculation.

its not starcraft mmo..
Sigh, IM Crushed !

Indeed. They already said they are not going to use an existing IP for their new MMO, but creating a completely new one.
Chances are indeed that it will not be a High Fantasy MMO as it would be a direct competition with their own WoW.
So the chance of it being a realistic real world or Sci-Fi MMO is pretty high
I wonder how much of the market they could capture if they did indeed make it Starcraft. Look how Funcom lied.

3 things I know about this game:
1. It will not be using a current Blizzard IP - > new IP.
2. It will be different from WoW, it won't be like a WoW with a different skin or anything like that.
3. This game has years before release.

yep to all above....also they are still hiring for the positions......so it will be awhile......

Whatever floats your boat Jim.
Maybe they will go for Asian lore.

I know they won't do it, but World of Diablo ftw. However, I have a feeling that it will be World of Starcraft.
Havent they been hiring for this game for like 2 years now?
*Stars* of Starcraft ... SoS .. that sounds a lot better. I think they trademarked it already. And I think also Dungeons of Diabloe.
Diablo 3 is coming out in 2010.
I highly doubt they're working on ANOTHER MMO.

This can't be an argument , not with Blizz. Hey, they have immesurable ressources.

It's not like they have a lot of resources, it's just that Blizzard takes forever to develop a complete game.
I have nothing but love for Blizzards products but wow, they sure take their sweet times.
Do you have any evidence it isn't? Or it it just something you hope?
