Windows 7 Public Beta up and running. Get your download and key.

ZorvanZorvan Member CommonPosts: 8,912

Here ya go. The first 2.5 million people get in. Server was offline yesterday due to heavy load but is back up. Get it before it's gone.

This is the official Microsoft Windows 7 public beta. Choose your preferred OS ( 32 bit or 64 bit ), fill out the info, and download the .iso ( you'll need to burn it to a dvd ). You will also be given a legitimate Genuine Windows Activation key.

So go get it, and find out why I say Windows 7 leaves XP SP3 and Vista SP1 in the dust. Microsoft finally got it right.

Also, you do not need to do a fresh install. You can upgrade from either XP or Vista.

If you know your key, you can get another disc off a torrent and use your key. You can use a program like Everest www.lavalys.com/ to find out your Windows key. it's also a very good diagnostic tool.

Be aware that going back to Vista or XP requires a complete reinstall. Just like moving from Vista to XP or XP to 2000, etc. So backup your important stuff.

If you backup your files and set a system restore point to before you install Windows 7, I don't see why not.

Even with a restore point, you can't "downgrade" an OS. You'd have to do a full install.

Ah, see, and there you have it. I'm not a tech specialist. That, and I've never really dicked around with my OS, just some internal tinkering.

Don't forget to backup your old operating systems product key before installing:

    1. Double-click My Computer

    2. Double-click on the "C" drive

    3. Go to the C:WindowsSystem32 folder (you may have to click on the link that says "Show The contents of this folder")

    4. Find the files "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" and copy them to a safe location. You can copy them on a floppy drive or burn it onto a CD or DVD.

    5. After you have reinstalled Windows XP on your reformatted hard drive, click "No" when asked if you want to go ahead and go through the activation process

    6. Reboot your computer into SafeMode (you can either press F8 as Windows is booting up to see the Windows Advanced Options menu and select SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Minimal or follow the instructions in Starting Windows XP in SafeMode

    7. Double-click My Computer

    8. Double-click on the "C" drive

    9. Go to the C:WindowsSystem32 folder (you may have to click on the link that says "Show The contents of this folder")

    10. Find the file "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" (if it exists) and rename them to "wpadbl.new" and "wpabak.new"

    11. Copy your original "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" files from your floppy disk, CD or DVD into the C:WindowsSystem32 folder

    12. Restart your system (if you followed the directions in Starting Windows XP in SafeMode you may need to go back into MSCONFIG to turn off booting into SafeMode)

I think the reached the download cap already.

No worries. Microsoft doesn't make that point well-known on the package when you buy an OS. You wouldn't believe how many threads full of people complaining  during Vista closed beta when they learned they couldn't just swap back to XP without formatting.

Best things to do, if you have more than one hard drive, or a large hard drive, is to make a partition and install, then just dual boot.

Or just take the five minutes to call Microsoft and re-activate over the phone.

Make sure you're using Internet Explorer instead of Firefox or some such. I tested with Firefox and it won't download, but works fine with IE.

Is this any good for games?   I reverted back to XP because I was getting lower-frame rates with Vista.  I heard it performs better in some areas, and is apparrently more stable, but all I care about is games atm.

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

I've tested Anarchy Online, Tabula Rasa, and Ryzom without a hitch. I am now playing EQ2 and have no problems at all. And the frame rates are better from anywhere between 10-20 more than on Vista. I also play Fallout 3 and  Deadspace with no prob.
