I keep seeing threads on free trial and Jan. 22, and invitation only.

So what is the difference between an invitation only free trial before launch and a closed beta?

There is no difference. Its just a bunch of double talk from Tasos.

Semantics. I think the love of semantics may be a requirement of membership to the fanbase

First of all, the NDA will be dropped. Second, he never said it would be invitation-only. We don't actually know how the system will be for people to play (it could merely be a queue depending on what they want to stress test that day, etc.).

In the simplest terms, the difference is that the trial period will be Public Beta.

semantic wise it means testing for bugs should be over and a customer tries the "full" thing out to base a buy or not decision upon...

But its not that easy with Aventurine semantics cause stress test comes with that  "trial"..and "turning on some not already turned on features" or "putting in some additionally stuff coming up with the feedback of  Closed Beta " ..

So its mystery and one thing is sure ..thats was coming with Jan 22.. will keep us thrilled  i guess..

    Especially when Tasos says this

"We know that the community has been speculating and wondering about the Darkfall release for some time. We haven’t replied until now because there were several complex issues to plan and work out. We also needed to get authorization before we could proceed with this official announcement:

Starting on January 22nd there will be a Darkfall trial with the distribution of the release candidate client allowing thousands of players to sample the game for free, help us stress test our servers and test the final features of the game.

It’s important to understand that there are well over 200 thousand applications by players wanting to get into Darkfall. This number makes it unrealistic to distribute the client and to open up our servers to everyone. We’ll try to accommodate as many players as are possible for us to manage at this stage. Even so, the demand exceeds our current capacity. Interest in Darkfall has surpassed all our expectations to the point that we may need to manage our release differently"

    So lets see

Need to apply like closed beta - yes

Testing servers like closed beta - yes

Testing new features like closed beta - yes

Given before launch like closed beta - yes

By invitation only like closed beta - yes

To me it seems like the exact same thing just Tasos trying to spin it different.  I'm perfectly willing to change my mind if there is a valid argument for this not being a closed beta.
