Ok hopefully this doesn't just dissolve into another thread about how UO was so much better before Tramm. I personally agree that it was, but I want to play a skill based MMO and unfortantlly that limits my options by quite a bit. So despite that it my not be as great as it once was, do people still play UO on the official shards?
Other then UO the only other skill based games I can even think of are Runescape, Asheron's Call, and I guess Eve Online, though I have qualms with their advancment sytem.

Hard to say much about other shards...I play Great Lakes...till the end of the month when I cancell. But the population there is pathetic. Houses collapsing all over the place. Easy as heck to place a medium sized house (villa, cabin). Go into any of the major cities on a busy night n you can prolly count the amount of players you see...on one hand.
I think many ppl just are keeping their old accounts for nostalgia purpose. One of my old guildmates, keeps his account but never logs on more than once every 3 months. I think he keeps the account going to upkeep his castle n keep gettin those 'Vet' rewards, hoping someday the account may be worth a few hundred dollars again so he can sell.
They say atlantic is kicking.
I was there for a month or two about a year ago and I found the new AOS stuff kinda fun. However, every freakin mob drops a magic somethin or other now which I don't like.
i'm not sure what people do for challenge / advancement.....probably their new elite dungeons like doom.....If I were you i'd try it out just to say I did.
Except Atlantic a LOT lower than most people are used to be.
I know some people still playing Europa shard. So there are some, but for me the losses were so hight and ea so passive with content that I decided to leave.
EA stated last time they had about 100.000 accounts. They also stated that more than half are in asia.
With a guess (supported from some stratics polls) that a player has on average 2 accounts (record seems to be with about 17 (that one had 30 accounts at one time)) you end up with about 25.000 players on the western side.
You should be able to get a house on any server these days, maybe on Atlantic not the biggest one, but else it should not be that much of a problem.
Atlantic is booming.
