2009? Not a whole lot. You're most likely going to have to wait until 2010-2012 for something thats even worth mentioning.
Aion - looks great, and very eye pleasing but its not going to do anything to reinvent the wheel.
Champions Online - City of Heroes 2.0, even uses the same engine.
Darkfall - another disaster waiting to happen, I'd hate to say it, but I said it.
Star Wars, Old Republic - Don't know if it will out this year, but be prepared for another dissapointment SWG fans. This game will be more like the NGE than pre-NGE. This will be a downgrade, not an upgrade.
What ever happened to Otherworld. Supposedly the 2nd Cyberpunk-style MMORPG (the first being Neocron) to come out. I only saw an announcement for this once.
I have to agree, 2009 looks pretty dead as far as good MMOs go.
Darkfall is a total unknown as far as when and how well it will release, just too many smoke and mirrors to make any real predictions.
Champions *IS* City of Heros 1.5 (calling it even 2.0 would imply something other than the look had changed); DC Heros seems likely to be very very similar.
Aion and the couple of other "generic fantasy" MMOs that are cooking will all be what they are, generic fantasy MMOs...no matter how well done, nothing new or really exciting to any of them.
Star Wars Old Republic - read Jedi wars, I may be wrong but it sounds like it will bear more resemblance to NGE SWG or the Cartoon Network version than anything most hardcore fans want.
Stargate and Star Trek Online - questionable to make it out this year really, same for most of the other up and coming SF/non fantasy games.
There might be a few surprises under the radar, like "The Agency" and/or some of the other espionage, near future, post apocalyptic and other unusual MMOs...but it's anyones guess which ones actually will make it to launch and in what form...
Pretty much a safe bet none of them hit much before Q4 anyways.

While I can agree that Fallen Earth has some serious potential, I'm not sure I would bet on it making it out in 2009.
Jumpgate evolution is a re-tread; sorry but I am not expecting anything of consequence from it other than a space fighter flight sim with a crappy mission and faction system tacked on. The graphics can look as hot as they want, but I doubt the game has any depth or legs.
As for Earthrise, can you say MMOFPS? I'm not sure what, if any, elements of RPG will be there; not to mention with the pvp/shooter focus it will appeal mostly to the counterstrike crowd. (Not a bad thing automatically, but hardly a point in favor of it as a persistant MMO) I'm not willing to bet it will get enough players for all that "player driven" economy and content to materialize.

Aion and the other "generic fantasy" games could still end up being fun and successful though. I'm personally kinda excited about Aion due to the fact that most fantasy MMOs lately have been somewhat dissappointing. I do agree that 2009 is looking pretty unexciting though.
Currently on a quest to try every free-to-play MMORPG. Okay, maybe not every single one, but most of them.

It's scheduled for Q2 of 2009, and I would say it's well on it's way.

The whole reason it will be awesome is because it is a space sim. I'm tired to death of the ridiculous amount of lock n' click fantasy games, and I honestly can't wait for a good online space shooter. The mission system they described sounds really good, everything else I've read about it sounds awesome. Frankly, I think it will be the best game to come out in 2009.
As for Earthrise, can you say MMOFPS? I'm not sure what, if any, elements of RPG will be there; not to mention with the pvp/shooter focus it will appeal mostly to the counterstrike crowd. Why does it having FPS combat suddenly make it no an MMO? From the sounds of it, it's going to be Eve on the ground with FPS combat.
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike Loved: Star Wars Galaxies Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
Heh call me pessimistic, I hope Fallen Earth proves me wrong...but what is public about it now seems a little "sparse" for a game supposedly launching in just a quarter. They may make it, but past performance of MMOs suggests it might see an "delayed to q4" or q1 2010 announcement soon.
As for Jumpgate Evolution, I'm not trying to put it down...really. It looks kind of fun, but really short on that whole "persistant" thing. It looks more like "Wing Commander: Teams" than EVE as fighter pilot if you get my meaning. Now it may be an entirely false impression, but the stuff they have out publicly isn't selling me on it.
Same thing with Earthrise really, what they seem to be promoting looks more like a team FPS with persistant characters. Nothing about it being an FPS makes it not an MMO, but it might make it not an RPG; is the game more about character development and advancement over time or is it weapons & tactics selection and how many friends I have online?
While I am a big fan of "sandbox" games, experience tells me any game has to have sufficient long term pve content on top of/alongside the pure pvp/competitve stuff or it simply will not get the player base for the "sandbox" to get enough players to matter/work. My concerns with Jumpgate:Evolution, Earthrise and several others honestly boil down to wondering if they have the PvE content to have any "legs" so they last long enough/get big enough for the pvp/sandbox aspects to matter. I'm sure they will be pretty - any company that can't manage good effects isn't going to even get off the ground; and I am sure they will be fun to play for a week or three...but will anyone stay 6months +?
So far Champions Online has caught my eye big time. I love the character customization that will be present in the geme. It should really be a fun game.
As far as everything else...I dunno. I expect to see a lot of games pushed back as they decrease the funds and dev teams working on them this year, and a lot of quiet cancellations for some of the smaller titles.
All in all, I think this will be the year of the expansions, rather than the year of brand new releases.
2009 should be a HUGE year. We got Jumpgate Evolution, Fallen Earth, and Earthrise all slated for this year. Finally some games with promise, some games that aren't trying to make it big with a half rate knock off game.
I agree. These are games that offer something different from the fantasy mainstream. I'm looking forward to trying FE and Earthrise, anyway.

Well seeing as AAA mmo titles cant seem to keep people for 6 months who knows. I'm hoping the smaller developers can save us from the mediocracy of the last year.
I'm looking forward to Earthrise but it all depends how they implement pvp territorial battles for me. If its solid enough or the basics are what i am looking for then i'll stay. I couldnt care less about the pve tbh. I'm hoping crafting is as indepth as they make out more than pve.
So far Champions Online has caught my eye big time. I love the character customization that will be present in the geme. It should really be a fun game.
Champions will be fun - but it really is just City of Heroes all over again. Great game play, great 3d engine...and no depth whatsoever.
I talked to the team they had showing it off at Gencon last summer and asked, "So what have you done to make this have more long term appeal than CoH had?" and basically got stammers and dodges for a response. Unless they have rounded up a whole lot of content people since then it is going to suffer from the same "wow I spent the last 3 weeks beating up 999978 of the same badguys over and over that CoH did.

I have a feeling that one of SOE's new titles may come out at the end of this year. Besides that, I guess I look forward to 2010 for more games.
I do think that Aion would be better than the MMORPGs that came out last year, and I'm not too sure about Darkfall.
Maybe Star Wars: The Old Republic?
I have no idea how far the devs have gone on that MMORPG.
So maybe 2009 Q4 isn't so unrealistic?
I really don't think darkfall is coming out this year.
What about TCoS? It's out it some countries I hear.
Whats TCoS?
Never heard of it.
I think that Dark Fall will get released no later than Q2 finished or not.

Jumpgate Evolution will be the sleeper hit of 2009.
Next year we'll have the big licenses: DC, Star Wars, Star Trek.
