The following MMO's were listed as being the top 9 best and biggest, listed from smallest to largest MMORPG.
9. AoC
8. EQ2
7. SWG
6. CoX
5. GW
4. WAR
3. EvE
2. LoTRO
1. WoW
They gave a big nod to AION for being worthy of a game to watch and DOFUS as a game that has been quietly successful for quit some time. DOFUS has 10million active players; 1.5 million of those P2P.
The majority of us on this site are hardcore MMORPG gamers, meaning we've played many if not most MMORPG's and have a lot of experience with this genre. This knowledge and experience has been both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing, because we've been apart of so many games and can now scientifically say which game is better than another, but the curse is that being able to compare games like that has left us jaded and has taken the magic away that these games still provide to the vast majority of MMORPG gamers out there. This list alone shows a different view than most of us have on the genre and should provoke us to think about how we've spent our time analyzing the genre and each game.
Maybe it's time to stop reading gaming forums, and stick to the various publications out there for our information. By doing this, we'd be less informed concerning every change and feature being planned and implemented along the development process, but the games would be pure when we finally do try one that we have our eyes on. I guess the best example of this is to think back to when KoToR came out or an Elder Scrolls game, or even your favorite FPS game. More than likely, you seen the features offered in some add or publication and became hyped up about it. Finally, it released and you don't have any reservations about trying it due to drama you read on the game during the development process, so your attitude and approach to the game is one that is pure and still able to approach the game with a positive attitude.
Just something to think about. Slowly but surely, I'm starting to frequent forums less to minimize the impact the drama and hate queens have on my outlook of a game.

SWG rated above both EQ2 and AOC..
really?
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
Look at that a Niche spaceship pvp sandbox listed as #3 on a major gaming site/mag.
Awesome for CCP.
Thats going to expose Eve to a even larger audience.
goodtimes.
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum
Wow, PC Gamer really went out on a limb with that list.
If you have something called an "attention span", EVE is frighteningly fun
Seems so boring when people talk about it, that's why.
--------------------------------------
A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"
Order of the White Border.

To me Eve feels like work, and work isn't what I want in a game.
why is aoc behind swg ? and why is lotr so far up the list, i dont think the people at the magazine actually play many of the games listed.
Lotr is a wow clone dumped in the tolkein universe and swg is just a big pile of poo. aoc is at least fun for a while as lotr is boring after level 20.
eve is a bit niche and i would love to enjoy to play it the problem is i have the attention span but the game is fundementally flawed in being dull unless your prepared to invest about 3 years of your life before it gets fun.
Not sure if you're being serious or not, but in case you are, they are talking about the current game. They had a picture of the Hoth battle SOE implemented. They also said this, "[t]he game has changed significantly since it's launch, but is arguably more accessible."

that list would sum up my list pretty well (though i would put EVE at number 1 :P and WoW around 8)

Thank you sir! That's my number one complaint about sandboxes. Fine, you get to live a virtual life and have freedom, but don't you already have one? For most people, having fun in a game trumps forging their own destiny in a sandbox.
Not most people on this site of course, but WoW cannot be denied.

You know that list is not all that inaccurate. If I were PC Gamer and was looking at the various MMORPG's available today and what each offers and so on and so on, I'd probably make almost the same list. My list however would look something like this.
9. AoC
8. WAR
7. EvE
6. CoX
5. GW
4. DAoC
3. EQ2
2. LoTRO
1. WoW
Nice list, but I wish FFXI was on it over AoC...
Also great write up and points OP.
The list is simply based on population, therefore your list would not go like that .

1. WoW
2. Lineage II
3. GW
4. FFXI
You're right, they obviously don't know anything about MMOs...pretty much just listed the 10 they could think of. But you are also wrong. LOTRO has quality (even if it is a WoW clone), whereas nothing about AoC is even worth mentioning in any context at any time.

That would require GW actually being an mmo which it is not
"DOFUS has 10million active players; 1.5 million of those P2P"
What a complete load of nonsense. How much did they pay you to say that? It is a well known fact that Dofus has about 700-900k active players. That 10 million number is all the people who have ever signed up for an account. My guess is a chunk of those never did play it.
Putting SWG on the list is ludicrous. They are lucky to have half the subscribers that AoC has if that.
That is the main reason I don't read that mag, they would not know a true fact if someone hit them in the face with it.
If it was based on population, it would be
1. WoW
2. Lineage 2
3. Lineage 1
4. Aion
5 LOTRO
etc...
Now that is funny, Aion is not even out yet and you have them higher than lotro. You sir, have a problem with ludicrous numbers too. Not dissing Aion, I think it will do well when it is released, but let's not jump the gun.
Guys I said "like" this. Not this is how it would look.
Hmm i wonder how many subs L1 and L2 have nowadays...care to comment Calindor?

Hes probably referring to the Korean version of the game which is out and has around 400k subs and growing. Last I heard LOTRO has 300k.
No the Korean version of the game is NOT out yet, it is still in beta test.
Please go back to sleep.
Fail troll is fail.
Saying EVE don't get fun until you spend 3 years is a pathetic ridiculas exaduration. You can have fun in EVE day 1. You can even PVP in EVE day 1 and be effective in a fleet. NO other MMO allows you to PVP in a effective manner in the open world setting day 1 like EVE.
People need to drop this fantasy that only 3 year vets can compete in EVE because it couldn't be more wrong. MANY ships don't even matter how many skillpoints you have after that ship is trained. Ship fitting, pilot tactics, fleet teamwork is MUCH more key to victory then skillpoints.
You can fly very decent ships in a short time training. As for the ships that take long to train for...WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? You want a titan day 1? People need to drop the WOW mentality when trying EVE, because EVE is NOTHING like WOWs format.

last they said aion had 200k, maybe 275k~ subs.. nowhere near 300-400k, half of those or even more are bots .. what could you expected from korean game >_<
